Security of our systems is one of the most challenging topics of our time. There is an international consensus that in order to respond to the number and sophistication of threats that we face, the level of security skills we have needs to be increased.

This forward-looking course, certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)*, will give you the skills and knowledge you need in the core areas of cyber security. You'll learn the theories, principles, practices and technologies of cyber security and gain knowledge and understanding of the principles underpinning effective approaches to cyber defence.

The course emphasises important technical material that will help you make effective cyber security decisions, and addresses issues such as: identity; trust and reputation; cryptography; network security; malware and intrusion detection; risk management; and the development of high-assurance systems.

If you are interested in pursuing a career in industry or government, this course will provide you with a broad education in cyber security, which will allow you to make technically informed principled decisions.

This course will also prepare you if you are seeking a research career in cyber security; a research skills module is a mandatory part of the course.

Through interdisciplinary perspectives, you'll develop the skills and confidence to improve our understanding of the world around us and work towards developing sustainable solutions to today’s environmental and social problems, drawing on ecology, bio- and geo- science to understand earth-system processes, and the social sciences and humanities to understand societal impacts.

An exciting collaboration between our Departments of Archaeology and Environment and Geography, you'll gain a fascinating insight into the sustainability of processes that take place over a few years to many thousands of years. The archaeology of human origins is a fascinating and dynamic area of research, with new evidence and theories constantly changing our interpretation of who we are.

On this course you'll explore the archaeology and approaches to human origins whilst working alongside internationally renowned specialists in early prehistoric archaeology and human evolution. You'll have the opportunity to work on pioneering studies with the potential for significant media exposure and gain ‘hands on’ experience of museum collections at the York Museum. You'll be able to select modules to allow you to explore your own research interests and have the chance to visit Upper Palaeolithic rock art on a field trip to Creswell Crags.

An English and Politics degree will enhance your understanding of the world around you in a thought-provoking, innovative way.

Studying English asks you to embrace new ways of thinking about the world and new possibilities of expression. Studying Politics invites you to engage with a vast spectrum of political issues and problems. Studying the two subjects together asks how literature and politics work to shape the world. Computer Science is founded upon Maths, and the study of the two together allows you to explore topics core to both whilst gaining an insight into how they intersect.

Maths influences Computer Science, from designing and analysing efficient computer programs to developing formal proofs that a piece of software does what was intended. This is especially important, for example, if the software is being used to fly a plane.

Increasingly, Computer Science is also being used to find solutions to mathematical issues. Computers are used to solve long-standing mathematical problems, as they can help visualise complex numerical data, search for solutions, and make number manipulation faster.

Successful actuaries use mathematical skill and business acumen to solve financial problems related to risk and uncertainty.

This degree combines the expertise of the York Management School and the Department of Mathematics, giving you access to world-class academics at the cutting edge of research in their fields.

You'll sharpen your mathematical skills and statistical reasoning, using advanced calculus, algebra, probability and statistics. In parallel you'll study economics, finance and accounting, developing your understanding of the wider context of actuarial work. Develop your knowledge of approaches to English language teaching to facilitate better teaching practice.

This course will provide you with the tools and resources you need to evaluate current issues and key trends in language learning and teaching in a range of contexts, and consider their application in classroom instruction, assessment, materials development and the English language curriculum. You'll also learn how to conduct your own research.

Human rights defenders strive for a world in which human rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.

Learn to bridge the gap between theory and practice by combining hands-on experience with interdisciplinary academic enquiry. Discover the theoretical frameworks and practical skills which make advances in human rights possible.

Study different aspects of human rights practice: the strategies employed and the debates, institutions and political structures that human rights defenders seek to influence. You'll learn directly from human rights defenders with first-hand experience in governmental, judicial, and grassroots roles.

You'll also develop a range of fieldwork, advocacy and legal skills and apply these on a placement in the UK or South Africa.

Philosophy and Sociology complement each other, giving you a deeper understanding of human behaviour, social norms, morality, and the workings of the mind. You will study some of the greatest and most influential thinkers whilst exploring the relationship between self and society.
