Our Masters course provides this essential interdisciplinary overview, allowing you to specialise in the sustainability of ecosystems, communities, landscapes, buildings and heritage, or to focus on the interactions between them.

An exciting collaboration between our Departments of Archaeology and Environment and Geography, you'll gain a fascinating insight into the sustainability of processes that take place over a few years to many thousands of years. Working across disciplines to address issues of current and future sustainability is both stimulating and challenging, requiring expertise from a range of subject areas. The Advanced Computer Science MSc course will enable you to develop a high level of understanding and technical skill at the leading edge of the subject.

This course has been specifically designed to address the pace of change in this vibrant discipline by giving you breadth of knowledge in several areas, a range of advanced skills, and the expertise necessary to engage in work at the forefront of the application of Computer Science.

You will gain experience of working as part of a highly-specialised research group through the significant individual project which is an integral part of the course.

This is a full-time, one year taught course, intended for students who already have a good first degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a closely related discipline, who would like to develop a deeper level of understanding and technical skill.

The course will build on your existing strong foundation in Computer Science. It will enable you to undertake more senior roles in the IT industry, engage in cutting-edge Research and Development or progress to a Computer Science PhD once you have successfully completed the course.

Environment, Economics and Ecology is a unique interdisciplinary degree that advances your critical abilities to tackle real-world environmental challenges, manage economic and social pressures in a sustainable manner, and integrate the benefits that people derive from the environment into policy decisions and practice.

It focuses on ecosystem services as the linkages between human and natural systems, and the need for a holistic socio-ecological approach to understand challenges and solutions to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Engage with heritage conservation in a broad interdisciplinary context and develop a unique mix of practice-based and theoretical learning for your professional work or further research in the conservation sector.

You'll learn essential disciplinary knowledge and advanced scholarship techniques with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sustainable building conservation practice. You will engage with practical and professional issues in a series of focused skills modules from an exciting range of related disciplines and develop your own experience in practice, whilst benefiting from the knowledge of our experienced practitioners.

A voluntary work placement in a conservation organisation in the York region will enhance and focus your practice-based experience and you will develop your research skills in an original, independently conducted research project.  

Established in 1972 and drawing on our wide range of department expertise, the MA Conservation Studies is particularly suitable if you are interested in a broader interdisciplinary approach to conservation such as cultural heritage management, digital heritage, landscapes, period-based or international conservation work.

You will study systems at different levels of abstraction, including digital hardware architectures, low level programming, operating systems, intelligent systems, compilers and high level languages.
