Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions. Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from education to religion, from the family to the state, from the divisions of gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability to radical societal change. What unifies these diverse topics of study, however, is sociology’s core purpose of understanding how human action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.

Sociology is an exciting and enlightening field of study that analyzes and explains important issues in our personal lives, our communities, and the world. At the individual level, sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of things such as emotions and ideologies, racial identity, sexuality, health and wellness, and crime. At the societal level, sociology addresses issues such as poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, law and the criminal justice system, and social movements. And at the global level, sociology studies such phenomena as political power, migration, war, terrorism, human rights and economic development. Students of sociology are challenged to look beyond the “normal”, taken-for-granted views to develop deeper and revealing understandings of the world around us.

We offer a strong program with a substantial emphasis on novel research and defense of a thesis. Our M.S. Chemistry and Biochemistry graduates often go on to Ph.D. and professional programs, while others pursue careers in industrial settings or teaching.

The objective of the international business option is to prepare students for the increasingly competitive and interdependent international business world with which they must cope. There is great and growing need for American business school graduates to be better informed about how to compete and do business outside the U. S. as well as in the U. S. market where much of their competition is from foreign firms. Students need to understand how international business practices and customs differ from those in the U. S. They need at least some familiarity with a language other than English as well as with cultural diversity and world geography.

The programs in chemistry and biochemistry at the bachelor’s degree level are planned to develop background in a specific science, to serve as preparation for graduate work in chemistry or biochemistry, and to provide a foundation for those students seeking careers in the chemical sciences, teaching, law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other health‑related professions, and in industrial and governmental scientific occupations.

The primary goal of the undergraduate program is to provide our students with a broad education in normal and disordered processes of speech, language, hearing and swallowing. This goal has the following objectives:

• Provide our students with an understanding of normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing and communication
• Provide our students with an understanding of the genetic, cultural, neurological, physiological, psychological, and socioeconomic factors which can disrupt normal development in speech, hearing, language, swallowing, and communication
• Prepare students for professional graduate training as speech-language pathologists.

The Community Health Education option is designed for persons whose occupational objective is to serve as a community health educator with a public, not for profit or corporate health agency.

The master's program prepares nurses to assume roles either as nurse practitioners or as nursing and healthcare systems executive managers.

The purpose of the nurse practitioner program is to prepare competent nurse practitioners who possess knowledge, skills and abilities in physical diagnosis, psycho-social assessment and management of health-illness needs in a primary or acute care environment.

The purpose of the Nursing and Healthcare Systems Executive Management program is to prepare nurses to assume executive-level positions and senior leadership roles in hospitals, clinics, healthcare systems and other healthcare entities serving patients in highly complex and diverse settings.

The master of science degree is open to qualified students who desire advanced preparation in a variety of areas of clinical specialization and executive management.

This degree is designed to prepare students for careers in coaching and in student-athlete development. Required coursework includes Psychology of Coaching, Sport in U.S. Culture, Seminar in Motor Learning, Applied Biomechanics: Lifting and Work Capacity, Advanced Strength and Conditioning, Psychology of Injury and Research Methods and Statistical Analysis, and an additional 12 units that include electives and a culminating experience (i.e., thesis or capstone project). The curriculum is designed to provide students with a well-rounded coaching education, while challenging them to learn research-based practices and application. Students should graduate with an established coaching philosophy, networking skills, and improved methods of motivation and athlete skill development.

This option emphasizes mathematics frequently used in applications. The student may choose one of two suboptions: the first is aimed at applications in science and engineering, the second at applications in economics and management. Students are prepared for careers in industry, business, and government and for graduate study in applied mathematics.

Students majoring in the B.S. in Mathematics (all options) who would like an enriched academic program that includes a thesis may complete the Honors in the Major program described here.

May also complete General Honors through the University Honors Program, in which case the thesis requirement may be met through the Honors in the Major.

The Master of Music degree program provides professional concentrations in Composition, Conducting-Instrumental, Conducting-Choral, Jazz Studies, Opera Performance and Instrumental/Vocal Performance.
