The Master of Arts in Spanish from California State University, Long Beach opens doors for teachers, journalists, translators, writers, and other professionals seeking to demonstrate advanced knowledge of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. The program has approximately 45 active students at any given time, a number that allows for individualized mentoring, advising, and intellectual engagement. Our graduates have become K-12 teachers, journalists, translators, interpreters, technical writers, community college instructors, lawyers, and PhD students. We offer an active program of intellectual and cultural events as well as opportunities for community and campus engagement. The MSCE Structural Engineering specialization requires completion of 30 units of graduate courses, as specified below. Each student's program must satisfy all requirements of the university, college, and department, and contain the equivalent of 10 or more units of design, as determined by the department's graduate coordinator. During the first two weeks of the first semester as a CSULB graduate student, the student should schedule an advising appointment with the graduate coordinator, who will assign him/her to one of the Structural specialization faculty.

The Art Education degree fulfills the subject matter competency required by the State of California to teach Art in public schools.

Students interested in teaching in public schools must earn a California Teaching Credential (Single or Multiple Subject). The credential is earned after you have received your undergraduate degree.

The Art Education program develops the skills needed in making art, talking about art, and planning art learning experiences. The art education classes use a multi-faceted approach that integrates the four visual art disciplines of art production, art criticism, art history, and philosophical aesthetics. They also promote a cross-cultural exposure to art and examine the influences among artists from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds as well as the inclusion of both men and women artists. Although the studio and art history classes prepare the university students in the content and skills of art, the art education classes bring these aspects together in a model that provides approaches on how to educate young people in the schools.

This option is for students preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary school level. Completion of this option meets subject matter competence requirements for the Single Subject Teaching Credential Mathematics. Consult the department’s Mathematics Education Advisor early to plan the program.

Students majoring in the B.S. in Mathematics (all options) who would like an enriched academic program that includes a thesis may complete the Honors in the Major program described here.

May also complete General Honors through the University Honors Program, in which case the thesis requirement may be met through the Honors in the Major.

Fashion Merchandising concentrates on the planning, procurement, and promotion aspects of the fashion business. Students learn to research target markets, analyze business results and develop strategies that effectively meet the needs of consumers in the international market.

The mission of the Fashion Merchandising and Design Program is to offer programs of study to develop professionals in apparel design, product development, production, and merchandising. Instruction, research, and service are combined to meet individual, family, and international community textile and apparel needs.

Students in this program write works for the full range of traditional acoustic instruments, from solo works to ones for large orchestra, as well as for various electronic resources, working constantly to refine their own compositional voice under the guidance of the composition faculty. The program offers many courses for advanced study, with recent offerings including seminars focused on computer notation, Max/MSP/Jitter, art song composition, Schenkerian theory, and composition informed by music outside of the classical tradition (including influences from rock, jazz, and non-Western traditions). Students in the program have written works for readings and workshops by the BCCM Symphony Orchestra, the BCCM Wind Symphony, Kronos Quartet, the Friction String Quartet, and many other resident and guest ensembles.

The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Jewish Studies is an interdisciplinary major that consists of courses in a variety of disciplines, including literature, history, religion, geography, Hebrew Language and politics. Students will gain an understanding of Jewish civilizations as the result of interactions of Jewish culture, history, and religion within both societies where Jews have been the dominant majority (the first two Jewish commonwealths and modern Israel) and the minority. Students will explore the constants and diversity of the Jewish experience in different eras and geographical settings. They will be able to define the parameters of the Diaspora and its significance on both Jewish and non-Jewish life. They will understand the significant Jewish beliefs, ethics, philosophies, and religious texts. Students will comprehend the place and role of Israel and Zionism in Jewish life, politics, culture, and religion. They will understand the history of the Holocaust/Shoah and its impact on both the Jewish and non-Jewish worldviews. Students will also gain a basic comprehension of and proficiency in Hebrew.

Food Science is the study of the physical, biological and chemical make up of food and the concepts underlying food processing. Food technology is the application of food science to the selection, preservation, processing, packaging distribution and use of safe food.

The MSCE Transportation Engineering/ Geotechnical Engineering specialization requires completion of 30 units of graduate courses, as specified below. Each student's program must satisfy all requirements of the university, college, and department, and contain the equivalent of 10 or more units of design, as determined by the department's graduate coordinator. During the first two weeks of the first semester as a CSULB graduate student, the student should make an appointment to meet with the graduate coordinator, who will assign him/her to an area advisor.

The Francophone world only begins in France, stretching far beyond the Champs-Elysées into Africa, Quebec, the Caribbean, and Tahiti. Additionally, a double major or a minor in French enhances any other degree program, making the student doubly marketable upon graduation. They pursue professions in teaching, business, travel, and diplomacy, to name only a few, continue their studies within our own M.A. program or pursue doctoral programs at Ph.D. granting institutions.
