The Master of Arts in Education, Option in Dual Language Development (30-33 units) focuses on bilingualism in school and societal contexts. The program, through its action research approach, seeks to develop a cadre of teacher-leaders who systematically and purposefully examine and refine their own pedagogy with respect to the instruction of language minority students.

This program prepares students to become professional nurses. Two distinct categories of students are eligible for admission: The “Basic” program student who enters the University without having completed a first level nursing program (diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing) and the “Registered Nurse” student who, having completed an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), desires further study to expand their nursing capabilities to the BSN professional level.

The “Basic” program student is eligible to take the National Council for Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to practice as a registered nurse (RN) upon completion of the program. All graduates are recommended for certification as a public health nurse in the State of California.

Fashion Merchandising concentrates on the planning, procurement, and promotion aspects of the fashion business. Students learn to research target markets, analyze business results and develop strategies that effectively meet the needs of consumers in the international market.

The mission of the Fashion Merchandising and Design Program is to offer programs of study to develop professionals in apparel design, product development, production, and merchandising. Instruction, research, and service are combined to meet individual, family, and international community textile and apparel needs.

Sculpture offers opportunities to explore figurative and formal approaches through molding, casting, and fabrication methods; video, kinetics and electronic arts; installation and intermedia; and performance, participatory, and relational practices. These activities are engaged and investigated across the field of contemporary sculpture and related practices, and in multiple contexts.

This option is designed to provide the student with curriculum activities that combine one or more option areas into a program of study. This option is developed by the student with the advisement of a graduate faculty member and/or the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies. A statement of rationale for the proposal must accompany the program of study.

Our students go on to other advanced degrees, become religious professionals, secondary and higher education teachers, librarians, educational entrepreneurs, managers or aid-workers in NGOs, writers or performance artists, business managers, and the like. The Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies, Interdisciplinary Option, provides students with a thorough basis in the study of French language, history, literature, politics, and culture within a global context. This major provides a unique opportunity for students to address the cultural, economic, social, and political dimensions of Francophonie. The Interdisciplinary Option reinforces California State University, Long Beach’s established and recognized record as a leader in offering students a global pedagogical experience that can be transferred to the working world of the present and the future. Students completing the B.A. in French and Francophone Studies (Interdisciplinary Option) will acquire an interdisciplinary understanding of history, culture, and society of France that will prepare them for a broad range of career options both at home and abroad. These include international law and business, teaching, government and Foreign Service. In addition, the solid background in French and Francophone history and literature provides a strong foundation for further study at the graduate level in a variety of M.A. and Ph.D. programs. To meet new demands for professionals, the Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies (Interdisciplinary Option) combines courses from French literature and related fields in the arts and humanities. The Interdisciplinary Option will enable students to draw from a multifaceted disciplinary basis to interpret cultural phenomena and trends in a variety of global contexts. As the only California State University to approach French and Francophone Studies at the undergraduate level from both global and cross-disciplinary perspectives, California State University, Long Beach recognizes the cooperative and symbiotic relationship connecting the disciplines of history and literature with respect to a comprehensive understanding of the Francophone World. French and Francophone Studies Interdisciplinary Option majors are required to develop a program of study in consultation with the program advisor.

Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers three concentrations: Asia Area Studies; Asia and Business; Asia and Globalization. All of these concentrations share a common core. Beyond the common core requirements, students select elective courses from one of the three concentrations to complete their 39 unit requirement for the major. Regular consultation with an advisor is highly recommended. Because of the importance of statistics to this discipline, students are advised to include STAT 108 among their GE courses. A “C” grade in all required and elective classes in the major is required for continuation of the program. It is also suggested that students take AST 320 or AST 336 for their required Upper Division WI Capstone course. Graphic Design incorporates a broad approach to the transmission of ideas, information, and subjective impressions through the use of print, film, video, and computer media. The program prepares students for professional careers in design studios, advertising agencies, corporate design departments, motion graphics firms, web design companies, and free-lance consulting.
