Biomedical engineering (BME), like any branch of engineering, uses scientific and mathematical principles to solve relevant problems facing the world. BME is focused on improving human health and encompasses many distinct areas such as:

• Biomedical optics
• Biomaterials
• Orthopedic biomechanics
• Biophysical interactions
• Drug delivery
• Biosensor development

Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play. With a bachelor's degree in public health, graduates can make an impact on public health locally and globally, conducting research, educating, and coordinating resources to prevent the spread of diseases.

Course work in these areas provides students with a thorough grounding in the fundamental skills and practices of public relations and advertising along with a theoretical understanding of their cultural importance as the primary means of persuasion in modern life. Students explore the differences, similarities and integration of public relations and advertising, a critical evaluation of industry content, and hands-on production skills. As students move through the program, they can gain professional experience with on-campus and metro-area media and agencies.

Working with a departmental mentor, students may emphasize either public relations or advertising or choose an integrated approach to both.

Throughout the program, students will be able to:

• Create a wide variety of advertisements for magazines, newspapers and TV.
• Manage advertising and public relations campaigns.
• Create campaigns for nonprofit institutions.
• Plan events.
• Understand and apply international advertising and public relations media needs.
• Account for cultural differences and how they impact advertising or public relations.

With rapid advances in technology, and as generations live longer, more active lives, the demand for biomedical devices, procedures and other solutions continues to grow as well. Biomedical engineers with advanced degrees have even more opportunities for expanded responsibilities.

This 32-credit MS-BME program was designed to be flexible to serve both full-time students and working professionals seeking to become innovators in the biomedical engineering field. Students will have significant opportunities for research in state-of-the-art labs, working alongside accomplished faculty.

Graduates of the program will have the experience to perform research and engineering design for academia, government and industries related to human health. Additionally, students with the desire to continue on to a PhD program or professional medical education will have the appropriate basis upon which to build.

Upon successful completion of this program students will:

• Gain the ability to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in biomedical engineering 
• Have particular expertise in a field of biomedical engineering through coursework or research
• Learn to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice 
• Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary issues in biomedical engineering with an emphasis on ethical questions 
• Students choosing the thesis option will gain research experience resulting in publishable work

In addition to their studies, our students maintain the highest standards in the areas of musicianship, pedagogy, and professionalism and work consistently with an extensive network of cooperating teachers in public school music settings (band, choir, orchestra, and general music) for field experiences that begin during the very first semester of the freshman year.

Our Health Sciences major will provide students with the skills needed to both conduct comprehensive health, wellness and fitness assessments, and develop programming to address the needs of clients, patients and populations.  Furthermore, our students will be equipped to assess the outcomes associated with these intervention strategies and prepared to implement changes accordingly.  

For those students who may be considering pursuit of a professional healthcare degree, our Health Sciences major will serve as a gateway designed to prepare students for graduate degree programs in Medicine, Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physician Assistant Studies.

Students from our Health Sciences Program will have opportunities to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to factor prominently into a variety of healthcare arenas, including human performance, strength & conditioning, corporate wellness, exercise physiology, health education, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and community health & wellness.  

Health Administration is an integration of healthcare, business management, and information systems.

As the healthcare delivery system is held to greater accountability, healthcare providers and entities must demonstrate quality outcomes, fiscal responsibility, and efficient and effective practices. To do this, health administration professionals collect and analyze data, incorporate innovative management techniques, and utilize new technologies to reengineer healthcare.

Health administration professionals are the inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs for the constantly evolving healthcare delivery system.

The Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy is your gateway to a career as a board-certified music therapist. At Duquesne University, we provide innovative and comprehensive training that connects your passion for music with your desire to improve the health and wellbeing of patients in a variety of clinical settings.

M.S. programs require a minimum of 30 post baccalaureate semester hours; 24 credits of course work, including 2 credits of seminar, and 6 credits of thesis research. The M.S. in Pharmacy Administration, thesis option requires 27 credits of course work, including 2 credits of seminar and 9 credits of thesis research; non-thesis option 33 credits of course work, including 2 credits of seminar. In conjunction with the Graduate School of Business Administration, the department offers an M.B.A./M.S. in Industrial Pharmacy, an 85 credit, non thesis program, requiring concurrent graduate-level enrollment in both the Graduate School of Business Administration and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Fifty-seven credits in core business administration course work and 28 credits of course work in the pharmaceutical sciences are required.
