The field of insect science encompasses the agricultural, biological, and environmental sciences related to insects and their interactions with humans. Insects and their relatives are the most abundant animals on earth, are commonly found in all habitats, and are essential in maintaining our ecosystem. Insect science offers numerous career opportunities in both basic and applied fields.

The core curriculum provides students with a balanced education focusing on insect identification, biology, structure and function, behavior, ecology, and diversity, as well as courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and the humanities. In addition to the core, there are two options from which students can select an area of focus which meets their own interest and career objectives.

The bachelor of science in veterinary science degree allows students to enter into the biomedical science or animal health career fields as a veterinary scientist. It also helps qualify students for admission to a veterinary medical school.

Courses in veterinary science are designed to broaden students’ knowledge of anatomy, biochemistry, histology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, and virology as they relate to diverse mammalian species.

The broadcasting major offers courses leading to a wide variety of careers in the broadcasting and media industries. Building on a solid base of instruction in radio, television, mobile and online journalism, the major has broadened its curriculum in response to advancing technology across the broad range of media. Broadcasting offers courses in news gathering and dissemination, videography, data visualization, Web design, sales, management, and other specializations including the use of audio, video and mobile technology. Courses are designed to develop both a comprehensive understanding of theoretical principles and professional skills. Most courses involve extensive practical laboratory work in addition to classroom lectures and discussions.

Many of the broadcasting faculty members have extensive industry experience at major television and radio outlets in Columbus, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; San Francisco and Los Angeles, California; Kansas City, Missouri; and Omaha, Nebraska. The faculty continues to be connected to the industry, and its members are actively involved in professional media organizations. Students, likewise, are encouraged to further their professional goals through participation in student organizations such as a chapter of the National Broadcasting Society, Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association, and the Radio Television Digital News Association.

Geography is a comprehensive discipline that, via spatial patterns analysis, reveals the intricate attributes and connectivity of human cultures and the natural environment. As such, geography is critical to understanding the complexities of global change. Students may specialize in one of many areas, including climate and weather, cultural/human geography, geographic information systems, historical geography of the Great Plains, natural resources, physical geography, pre-community and regional planning, regional studies, or remote sensing.

An education in geography prepares students for careers in government agencies as well as those involved with foreign service, land management, tourism, health care delivery systems, environmental assessment, transportation development, land use planning, air traffic control, and GIS and cartographic analysis, and in a wide variety of businesses, particularly those concerned with environmental mapping, geographic information systems, and planning. A geography major also prepares students for graduate-level degrees in geography, law (especially environmental law), international business, urban and regional planning, and teaching at all levels.

The School of Art, Art History and Design offers students the opportunity to investigate visual art through a variety of experiences. The art major enables students to attain proficiency in the practice of art and knowledge of the history of art as part of a general college education. Some may want to devote themselves to a period of intensive studio art education, while others may be interested in pursuing art for the purpose of building cultural awareness and critical thinking skills. Two undergraduate degrees are available to art majors. The student’s career goals will determine the appropriate option.

The bachelor of arts degree (BA) is a liberal arts degree with about forty-five percent of the coursework in the School of Art, Art History and Design, providing the flexibility to study various academic disciplines outside of art. The bachelor of fine arts degree (BFA) is a professional degree, the usual preparation for professional careers or graduate study in studio art, and includes about seventy percent of the coursework from the School of Art, Art History and Design. Increased studio art requirements in the BFA allow for specialization within a chosen area or a customized studio experience.

The applied science degree program will prepare students for professions that involve the application of science in society, rather than the practice of science and scientific research.  The goal is to provide an integrated understanding of how basic and applied science benefit and impact us, from the individual to the biosphere.

The Applied Science major allows students to select from a broad range of courses across the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources to make the degree fit their career goals.

A major in sociology within the College of Arts and Sciences provides students with vital intellectual and occupational skills. This includes analytical thinking; creative problem solving; effective written and oral communication; collecting, analyzing and interpreting data; and gaining expertise regarding the impact of social and cultural dynamics on individual and societal trends. Students may pursue broad training in sociology, or they may pursue a specific Focus Area, such as Crime/Deviance, Family, Health, Social Inequality, or Social Research. We also encourage students strongly to seize the opportunities provided for internships and a variety of research experiences, which play a key role in helping students define their career trajectory and build a resumé.

Our majors pursue careers in a variety of fields that reflect their substantive expertise, such as:

• Social-Justice Related Activism
• Law and Criminal Justice
• Education and Social/Human Services
• Research—especially public health and medicine, public opinion research, market research/marketing, as well as occupations requiring data collection, analysis, and project direction skills (e.g., nursing, policy work, journalism, engineering, computational sciences)
• Public Service/Government and Administration
• Private-sector for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations
• Management and Human Resources

We also encourage students to combine their interest in sociology with one of the many interdisciplinary programs/certificates offered in the College of Arts and Sciences and beyond. This includes but is not limited to Conflict Resolution, Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Global Studies, Human Rights, Humanities and Medicine, Public Policy, Women’s and Gender Studies, plus the Center for Great Plains Studies and the Center for Civic Engagement.

Your major in computer science will encompass software experience to prepare you to develop the compilers and operating systems of the future, hardware experience to design the next generation computer chips in Silicon Valley and theoretical studies to advance into research in academia.

Over half of your coursework involves computer science software and hardware, mathematics and the natural sciences, leaving time and flexibility to explore your specific interests. Imagine yourself in elective courses such as:

Economics is a popular major for undergraduates because the content taught has broad application to decisions made by individuals, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. An economics major also helps students understand major economic issues that are discussed and debated at the local, state, national, and international levels of society. In addition, an economics major offers sound preparation in analytical thinking and quantitative methods for students planning to enter professional and graduate programs, particularly those in law, business, finance, public policy, and international relations. Professional economists are employed at colleges and universities as teachers and academic researchers; in many branches of governments as policy analysts and data scientists; and in businesses of all types as economic experts, consultants, and applied researchers. Economists study a wide range of topics that include competition in markets, technology and innovation, public finance (taxes and spending), labor and education, environmental issues, income distribution, money and monetary policy, and international trade and finance.

This degree program prepares students for careers in communications, advocacy, and public service roles in the agricultural, natural resources, and environmental disciplines. Degree requirements provide students a broad education combining skills and knowledge in agricultural, environmental, and natural resources sciences; the social sciences; and mass communications. Graduates of this program are also qualified to pursue careers in public relations and public service in government agencies, nonprofit, and private organizations.
