Overview

The College Student Affairs Administration (CSAA) program is designed for those students interested in a professional career in the various college and university student affairs and student services areas. Program participants will prepare for careers involving organisational management, student development, leadership training, and administration. Guided by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), the curriculum includes selected foundational studies; student development theory; student characteristics and effects of college on students; individual, group, and organisational interventions; organisation and administration; and assessment and evaluation. The program also includes substantial supervised internship opportunities.

The master’s degree in College Student Affairs Administration is a 36 hour program designed to be completed in two years. The program includes a professional core in addition to an an opportunity to choose one advisor-approved elective. At least six hours of internship experience is included in the professional core. Internships are available in a wide variety of student affairs and student service areas. Students are encouraged to seek at least one internship experience away from the UWF campus.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

The University of West Florida is one of only a few institutions in the United States which offers a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology. The program is provided through the Department of Biology. The curriculum includes a series of seven core courses fundamental to all areas of biology. Elective courses emphasize theoretical and practical aspects of aquatic/marine biology. Wetlands and estuarine marshes of the main campus, as well as the nearby Santa Rosa Island campus and the Gulf of Mexico, provide living specimens for study and serve as laboratories supporting elective courses. Graduates may seek careers in marine biology, fisheries management, aquaculture, pollution biology, and marine toxicology, and find employment in local, state, and federal departments of environmental regulation and education, as well as the private sector. Graduates are also well prepared to pursue advanced degrees. Prospective students need to be aware that some biology lab courses involve the use of live animals; students may wish to seek details from course instructors before enrolling.

The M.A. in Psychology provides students with the study of human behavior. Graduate training in Psychology entails in-depth exploration and understanding of the core foundations of the biological bases of behavior, the social bases of behavior, the acquired bases of behavior, and the individual bases of behavior. As a scientific discipline, the study of psychology also requires competence in research methodology, statistics, and critical thinking.

The Zoo Science Specialization is designed for and limited to students who have completed an A.S. in Zoo Animal Technology from Santa Fe College (Gainesville, FL). It provides further study of the field with an emphasis on the biological sciences. The specialization has been designed to prepare students for a wide variety of careers in the animal industry, in such fields as zookeeper, curator, or director or operating one’s own animal industry business. It is not designed as a pre-veterinary medicine program and does not include all of the courses normally required for admission to a college of veterinary medicine.

The B.A. in Anthropology provides a broad base of information about human culture and what makes humans unique. Culture is the totality of what humans learn and the basis for how humans define the world. Anthropologists study all kinds of individual cultures, both living and dead and simple and complex, in order to gain an understanding of culture as a human phenomenon. The very nature of anthropology is multicultural and historical. This program is hands-on, and students regularly participate in faculty-directed research projects in the Pensacola area. Senior internships and cooperative programs with private firms and government agencies also provide on-the-job training and can lead to employment. The B.A. in Anthropology is a springboard to a wide range of jobs in the private or government sectors, as well as continuing one’s academic career after graduation.

Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Master of Science in Environmental Science (STEM)

The M.S. in Environmental Science provides advanced research and educational opportunities in the earth and environmental sciences. Departmental areas of concentration include coastal science, paleoclimatology, landscape ecology, geographic information science, aquatic biogeochemistry, and soils science. The program includes both thesis and non-thesis tracks. The non-thesis track provides a foundation for employment in the private and public sectors of the environmental fields. In addition, the thesis track prepares students for advanced study leading to the doctoral degree. Master of Arts in History

Prepare to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly connected world. With a Master in Arts in History from the University of West Florida, you’ll conduct independent research, evaluate popular claims of “historical fact,” identify social patterns and reveal the voices of people from all backgrounds.

Why History at UWF?

Our faculty are passionate about teaching and working with students, something you don't often find at larger institutions. We also have access to a living-learning lab with the UWF Historic Trust and the Digital Humanities Lab on campus. The trust is a non-profit direct support organization managing thirty properties in the Pensacola National Register Historic District, giving you hands-on, real-world experience.

We offer three interdisciplinary specializations: Early American Studies, Public History and Traditional History. Within each track, you will have the opportunity to learn a variety of interdisciplinary skills.

The Department of History awards several scholarships and teaching assistantships to graduate students. All students have numerous opportunities work with faculty in a variety of research areas.

What You Will Learn

By engaging the written word at a deep level, you expand your analytical and writing skills in order to develop as a scholar and a writer, enhancing the skills that are valued in many professions.

The program will provide you with opportunities to benefit from study with active scholars and successful creative writers, community-based internships, hands-on teaching experience in the UWF Writing Lab, small classes, visiting lectures by notable scholars and writers and participant-centered workshops.

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of literary theory, British literature, American literature, poetry and rhetoric and practice writing and workshopping fiction, non-fiction, creative non-fiction and creative writing. Hone your teaching skills by teaching composition courses through our writing program.

Courses in the program cover both canonical and non-canonical works of fiction and nonfiction. You will receive broad exposure to texts from a range of historical periods and cultures. The program offers a thesis and a non-thesis track.

The B.A. in Political Science provides students with a foundation in the liberal arts and social sciences. Courses in the degree plan cover fundamental questions pertaining to the governance of human societies, the origin and evolution of law and justice, the comparative performance of democracies and dictatorships, the exercise of political leadership, the origins of war, and the maintenance of peace. Students will analyze competing theories of human nature and political organization subjecting them to the test of reason, history, and experience. The political science major is appropriate for many students, including those seeking a professional degree in government and public service, specific expertise in international security and diplomacy, familiarity with political organizations, and preparation for employment in advocacy, corporate, education, or non-profit sectors.

The Pre-Law Specialization emphasizes core courses in American government, with attention paid to American political thought, constitutional law, and judicial politics. The political science/pre-law major is appropriate for students seeking a pre-professional degree in law.
