The Art Department offers a rigorous, supportive and personalized environment with a sound liberal arts foundation. Anthropology is the study of humankind in cross-cultural and evolutionary perspectives. With one foot in the sciences (both social and biological) and the other in the humanities, anthropology takes a holistic approach and consists of four sub-disciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistics. Anthropologists emphasize fieldwork as a means to investigate cultural diversity and human biology in our species—past, present, and future.

Our major fulfills its mission by equipping the student with an integrated view of the discipline and providing biological, archaeological, linguistic, and cultural emphases with attention to laboratory and on-site field methods. The goal of the anthropology student is thus to construct a broader, more inclusive, and insightful view of humans/humanity in context.

The Department of Anthropology at Drew University emphasizes the importance of fieldwork and laboratory expertise. Through the major program in anthropology, biological anthropology and in the archaeology minor, students will be expected to develop first-hand experience with the specific research methodologies of the sub-discipline (ethnographic fieldwork, excavation  and laboratory research).  Further, Drew University offers a wide array of off-campus study opportunities—many of which contain ethnographic or social science research content—and it is very much recommended that students attempt to include one of these experiences in their programs.

Philosophy
The study of philosophy is to embark on conceptual exploration. Philosophers seek rational answers to enduring questions about knowledge, reality, value, thought and language. From the time of Socrates to the present day, philosophers have examined fundamental presuppositions of science, morality, governance and art. Philosophy demands close thought. It fosters careful augmentation and clear writing.

The Business major takes an integrated, multifaceted, interdisciplinary, and critical approach to the study and practice of business. The program emphasizes teamwork; critical analysis; and quantitative, oral, and written communication skills.  Our graduates are prepared to work across many industries in diverse contexts, including corporations, non-profits, and public organizations, in both domestic and international settings, with others from different cultures and disciplinary perspectives.

The marketing major is a liberal arts program that takes an integrated, multidisciplinary, and critical approach to the study and practice of marketing. The major encompasses courses that emphasize strategic planning, data analysis, communication skills, and teamwork.  We will soon be offering a New York semester in marketing that gives our students the opportunities to meet with marketing experts and visit leading marketing firms.  Our graduates are prepared to work across many private and public organizations in a wide variety of marketing roles.

Chinese Studies
CHINESE STUDIES explores one of the world’s most powerful shapers of the future. Majoring or double-majoring in Chinese Studies opens doors and makes graduates uniquely desirable to employers in any number of fields, from business to the sciences to humanities and fine arts. Available as a major or minor program of study.

Through its rigorous curriculum, the Chinese program prepares students linguistically and intellectually for interaction with China and the Chinese-speaking world. Speaking, reading and translating are stressed at all levels of language instruction. Extracurricular activities—study groups, field trips, films and more—help to integrate the study of the language and the culture.

A key feature of Drew’s program is an internship, which allows students to build experience and work with a talented group of industry mentors. Mentors work with students in diverse areas such as municipal bond research, derivatives trading, and private equity, and each student has the opportunity to expand their network with NYC-based financial institutions during their time at Drew. A team-based portfolio management assignment occurs during the capstone, which allows students to present asset allocation recommendations to a panel of industry practitioners and financial experts

Financial Engineering

Drew’s STEM-designated Master of Science in Finance program with a concentration in Financial Engineering is a rigorous, 30-credit immersion in advanced finance. Students will learn how to apply finance, mathematics, programming, and engineering methods to build models and solve complex financial problems. Across the financial markets, there is a growing need for financial engineering skills in algorithmic trading, risk management, securitization, and derivatives. Drew students will be leading that change forward.

International Year One program in Pre-Engineering will prepare you to enter your next semester of a bachelor’s degree program at Drew University. Upon successful completion of International Year one and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at a number of well-known US universities.
This transition from an INTO program to a university degree program is called progression. You must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA per semester to remain in good academic standing in the Pathway program at Drew.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.

Political Science
The Political Science and International Relations Department engages students in the study of how people govern themselves—from the smallest communities to the international system. In the town meeting, the halls of Congress or the United Nations, the great political questions are the same—how to reconcile individual aspirations and community needs, freedom and equality, authority and justice, participation and power.
The department offers students a major in Political Science and another one in International Relations. We also offer minors in Political Science, International Relations and Law Justice and Society.
