Creative Writing is an area of concentration within Drew’s English program that provides you with an informed understanding of depth and breadth of literature written in English, while at the same time helping you to develop your writing skills and unique voice.

We prepare you with a broad and balanced program of study that emphasizes interconnections between various literary genres as well as other disciplines such as history, science, fine arts—and more.
You’ll develop your writing through reading and writing assignments, lectures, workshops, public readings by renowned writers who visit campus—as well as many opportunities to present and discuss your work with peers and professors.

Upon successful completion of International Year One and meeting university requirements for undergraduate admission, you may enter your third year of undergraduate study at Drew University or at a number of well-known US universities. Progression is the transition from an INTO program to a university degree program.

Theatre Arts
The Department of Theatre and Dance trains you in the full range of theatrical disciplines, providing you with mentorship and support in creative expression, critical thinking and personal development. Our goal is to create total theatre artists.
The Theatre department at Drew is dedicated to a broad-based study of the history, literature, theory and practice of theatre and its various disciplines in the context of an overall liberal arts education. Students grow as artists through rigorous academic courses, internships, exciting opportunities for professional collaboration and an extensive co-curricular production program that centers on student initiative.

English
As English majors, students read widely, engaging with many kinds of texts from multiple periods, geographical areas, genres, and literary traditions. Within the major, students choose a specific emphasis (Literature, Creative Writing, or Writing and Communication Studies) as their focus and develop their skills and knowledge through in-depth exploration within that emphasis.  Through the major, students develop flexibility of thought, attentiveness to language, an ability to engage with the world around them, and to understand difference (gender, race, class, ability, religion, nation), capacities which they may apply in almost any area of study or employment after college.  Upon completion of the major, students will particularly demonstrate the following:

Close Reading: In their reading of a text, students demonstrate attentiveness to language, technique, structure, cultural/historical reference, and forms and genres.

Range of Approaches: Students use critical frameworks to open texts in different ways.

Historicizing: Students analyze texts in relation to the historical period and culture in which they were produced.

Writing: Students write clearly and flexibly, using writing to develop and express ideas, to construct narratives, to connect with multiple audiences, and as a tool for thinking.

Information Literacy: Students can find, evaluate, and engage with sources using disciplinary research tools.

Synthesizing: In creating their own arguments, students draw on a variety of texts, scholars, and/or theories and place them into conversation with each other.

Finance
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Finance major is designed to appeal to students wanting to immerse themselves in financial markets and data analysis.  Our rigorous and exciting curriculum engages our students through real-world exposure to U.S. and global markets, and prepares our graduates for success in careers throughout the financial industry.

Biology
The biology major offers students the opportunity to study the biological basis of life from a wide range of perspectives, from ecosystems to organisms to cells and molecules. A critical component of our curriculum is active, inquiry-based learning, including classroom and laboratory experiences that provide not only in-depth exposure to core concepts in biology but also development of skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, data analysis, and scientific writing.

We offer a rigorous scientific curriculum grounded in the liberal arts tradition of making connections with many areas both within and outside of the sciences, as students learn to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Drew University offers nationally recognized, cross-disciplinary programs of study in the environmental sciences and in environmental studies and sustainability. Our curriculum integrates the sciences with the social sciences, humanities, and the arts, and exemplifies Drew University’s academic and community identity.

Supported by a generous grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, our program offers both a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in Environmental Studies and Sustainability, which are unique in their emphasis on our local ecology, cultures, and collaborative practices. The BS in Environmental Science provides students a solid grounding in environmental science, as students take courses across science disciplines with a focus on environmental problems. The BA in Environmental Studies and Sustainability provides students with an understanding of environmental issues from a range of perspectives across disciplines.

Physics
Physics provides much of the conceptual foundation and instrumentation fundamental to astronomy, engineering and other sciences. It has inspired the creative work of mathematicians, philosophers and social scientists. Drew’s program is designed to provide rigorous preparation for those planning careers in the field, while also serving the needs of liberal arts students interested in a variety of other careers.

Chemistry
Drew’s chemistry majors share a love of science and apply their passion to many different areas: from biochemistry and medicines to the environment and synthesizing new materials. They use Drew’s state-of-the-art labs to study chemistry, and all students conduct research mentored by a faculty member or RISE Fellow. With our curriculum approved by the American Chemical Society, Drew’s graduates have great success in research, medicine, teaching and industry.

The Psychology Department’s mission is to teach psychology as a research science in the context of a liberal arts education through a comprehensive curriculum and innovative pedagogy. Our curriculum provides a grounding in all the main core areas of the discipline, but also allows opportunities for students to do independent research and to study specialized, interdisciplinary and applied topics.

Because the total number of credits required to complete the major is limited, students are also able to take advantage of the full range of liberal arts courses offered at Drew. Our pedagogy promotes a high quality education by emphasizing excellence in teaching, research methodology, experiential learning, mentoring, independent study and utilization of technology.

Mathematics
Mathematics lies at the heart of the liberal arts. Based in abstraction and logical reasoning, mathematics is both a body of knowledge and an elegant and useful way of perceiving our world. Through mathematics, we can distill and describe the otherwise hidden patterns and relations among things. Because of this, mathematics finds ubiquitous application, from the natural and social sciences to the humanities and the arts. Precise abstraction and quantification play an increasingly important role in these diverse areas, and the study of mathematics can provide a foundation for any of them.
