The tourism and outdoor recreation industries are among the largest in the world and continue to grow in Oregon and throughout the nation. As a TRAL graduate, you will be a leader, educator and entrepreneur in our most important natural spaces. The graduate program in Biological & Ecological Engineering deals with diverse issues in the design and analysis of a wide range of biological and hydrologic systems. Focus areas are in bioprocessing, biosystems analysis and water resource engineering/watershed analysis.

Food Science and Technology
Food Science and Technology concerns the chemistry and engineering necessary to deliver safe, appealing and convenient food products from the farm gate to the food marketer. The academic program integrates principles and concepts in the physical, biological and engineering sciences, and applies them to the scientific and technological aspects of food processing. The role of the food scientist is to successfully integrate these disciplines to assure an abundant, high quality and nutritious food supply.

Electrical and Computer Engineering
The field of electrical and computer engineering is revolutionizing technology and impacting diverse areas such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, forestry, health care, renewable energy and robotics. The ECE curriculum includes hand-on learning in which students get to apply their knowledge of electrical and computer engineering to create their own robot. In an introductory class, students build a TekBot and as they progress through the program they add more functions to their robot.

Sociology
Sociology is the study of human social behavior and sociologists examine interactions within and between groups and resulting social institutions. The undergraduate program in sociology provides a general analysis and broad understanding of human societies and culture for persons in all fields. Two options are currently available for those interested — Crime and Justice, and Environmental and Natural Resource Sociology — although students can shape a custom theme such as international development or social policy.

Biochemistry and Biophysics
The BS degree in Biochemistry and Biophysics provides a degree path centered on the chemistry and physics of life processes with training that integrates the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biochemistry, genetics, and computer science.  Biochemists explore the chemical structure of living matter and the chemical reactions occurring in living cells. Biophysicists use the methods of physical science to study the structure and functions of macromolecules and solve problems at the intersection of biological and physical sciences.

Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering is the study and modeling of systems where heat and fluid flow are coupled with chemical reactions. Examples of systems are the human body, ground water, the atmosphere, the ocean, and chemical reactors. Natural systems are measured and modeled in order to understand present and future behavior. Man-made systems are specifically designed to convert raw materials into more useful products.

Making useful products requires using mathematics and science to plan, develop, design, operate, and improve processes. Some processes are micro-scale, as in computer chip manufacturing, and some are large-scale, as in petroleum refining. Typical products from these processes include computer chips, solar cells, batteries, pharmaceuticals, plastics, synthetic fibers, composite materials, pulp and paper, and consumer products ranging from detergents to cosmetics. Chemical engineers find employment in large high-tech companies, environmental consulting firms, large commodity companies and small software companies. Employment prospects for graduates in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest are strong.
