With an MS in Physics, you'll have the background you need in statistical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, mathematical physics, and quantum mechanics to pursue a career in research, industry, or education.

To prepare you for these fields, we've developed a program that is advanced, fast-paced, and research-focused. In fact, your curriculum will allow you to explore the same research areas as our PhD students, because we want you to be well-equipped to pursue an advanced degree when you finish. In addition to your curriculum, we'll want you to choose between one of two plans. Plan I (thesis option) requires a thesis based on original research. You can research in an interdisciplinary area such as biophysics, chemical physics, geophysics, mathematical physics, neurophysics, optics, materials science, or engineering physics. Or, if you're still mulling over the decision of whether to pursue a PhD or MD, Plan II (non-thesis option) is built just for you. The thesis option is replaced here with more advanced coursework and an exit exam.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. The Master of Public Health (MPH) is the most wellknown Public Health degree. It is considered a “terminal” or “professional” degree, as it fully prepares individuals for lifelong careers in public health practice without the need for additional education.

Industrial Hygiene - Concentration
The Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) with a concentration in Industrial Hygiene presents students with an option to focus on industrial hygiene topics and provide a dedicated research experience. Industrial hygiene professionals must be able to recognize, evaluate, and control occupational situations that may lead to disease or injuries. They may also need expertise in designing and conducting studies of occupational sites to assess the probability that exposures present a risk to workers, to define safe limits for human exposures, and set in place control measures.

The research aspect of this curriculum is conducted under the requirements of the UAB Graduate School and requires conducting research under an advisor’s supervision and writing and defending a master’s research thesis. The industrial hygiene program is part of the Deep South Center for Occupational Health and Safety, one of 18 Education and Research Centers supported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Funding is available for eligible applicants through the center.

Our goal is to enable students to:

• Demonstrate knowledge on the scientific principles and fundamentals of industrial hygiene.
• Use sampling and analytical methods to conduct occupational exposure assessment.
• Demonstrate the fundamentals in controlling occupational exposure hazards.
• Apply fundamental concepts of industrial hygiene theory to real life practical cases.
• Explain knowledge on fundamental concepts of occupational safety and health.
• Apply the basic regulations and standards of industrial hygiene and occupational health and safety to real field situations.

In political science, we teach you how American government and politics compare with the rest of the world. This major is an excellent option if your career interests are either political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, political research, foreign diplomacy, law, journalism, or education.

To get you started, we'll give you an overview of American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and data and policy. Then, your advisor will help you choose between a line of study that's focused on the United States and one that's more internationally centered. At that point, you'll be able to tailor your curriculum with your goals in mind, search for appropriate internships, and even potentially get one-on-one faculty mentoring through the honors program.

Genetic and Genome Sciences
Genetics is a fundamental aspect of all biological processes and affects all facets of our lives. Understanding and analyzing the function and behavior of genes is critical to improving the quality of life for human beings and has far-reaching implications for our entire global ecosystem.

Traditionally viewed as a discipline within biological sciences, today, the study of genetics and genomics is an interdisciplinary exercise that involves multiple fields, including computational sciences and information systems.
It is also a rapidly advancing field in research and training. With the ever-increasing use of genetic tests, and of whole genome sequence information for disease diagnostics, there is a high demand for qualified and experienced genetics researchers and health-related professionals. The UAB Undergraduate Program in Genetics and Genomic Sciences (GGS) is designed to nurture a new generation of UAB undergraduates who will be ideally equipped to pursue and succeed in a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology in industry, and other health-related sciences.

History
Students decide to become History majors for many different reasons. Maybe you are curious about the Revolutionary War because of Hamilton. Or maybe you grew up in Alabama and want to know more about the state or Birmingham. Perhaps you saw a TV show about how aliens built the pyramids (they didn’t, btw), or you find gladiators or Nazis fascinating. Or, maybe you just want skills that employers are looking for. In the History department, we teach all these things and so much more.

One of the best things about a major in History is that the degree is flexible and can be tailored to your interests. Once you’ve finished two introductory sequences (U.S. history and either World History or Western Civ.), the majority of your classes are going to be courses that you want to take and fit into your schedule. Only two other courses are mandatory—HY 300, which teaches historical research and writing skills, and HY 497 (the capstone) where you work with a professor on a project of your choosing.

Neuroscience

Because this program is a partnership between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, you'll have a diverse course offering that includes biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and neurobiology. Furthermore, this program satisfies most prerequisite course requirements for those looking to go on to medical school or to pursue another career in health care. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to earn a general science teaching certification through UABTeach and have a chance to collaborate and research with a faculty member on campus.

Public Health
The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

Our Master of Arts (MA) degree in Communication Management is specifically targeted at professionals in communication-related fields and students seeking an advanced degree in communication. As a student in our program, you’ll explore practical and theoretical applications in a variety of challenging real-world communication contexts. Our classes are offered in the evenings and on weekends to make them easier to fit into your already-busy schedule.

Philosophy
As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues.
