To succeed, healthcare providers need quality administrators like you to keep their organizations running as smoothly as possible. We can teach you the skills you need for leadership positions at hospitals, health systems, physician group practices, long-term care facilities, consulting firms, and insurance companies.

This program is offered in two formats – executive and residential – and your previous experience will determine which format is better for you. If you're a seasoned health professional, you'll enroll in the executive format, where we'll build on your years of experience and help prepare you for a senior management position through a combination of distance-learning courses and on-campus sessions. If you're looking to make the transition to health administration, you'll do the residential format, where you'll learn about the fundamentals of the field as well as get various networking opportunities. Although each format has slightly different curriculums, there are some similarities. Your courses will include health policy, strategic planning, health law, organization theory, economics, and marketing. The executive track offers a capstone experience, while the residential requires that you complete an administrative residency, internship, and capstone course.

Entrepreneurship
Many of the world’s leading companies began as student startups. Could one of your big ideas be next? At UAB, we can teach you how to turn your idea into a business, preparing you to be an entrepreneur who adapts to change, solves problems, and can thrive in all sorts of environments.

You see, before you have a big idea, you have to find the right problem to solve. Our curriculum is designed to show you how to fall in love with a problem so that you can find the right solution. Then we want you to take that solution and turn it into a viable business. To do this, you’ll take required courses like The Entrepreneurial Mindset, Entrepreneurial Strategy and Operations, and The Entrepreneurial Engagement Seminar, along with core business classes that cover the basics of marketing, finance, management, and more. You’ll even take Public Speaking to help you develop the skills to deliver that perfect pitch. We also want your education to be full of hands-on experience. Because how else will you really learn how to launch a business? You can pursue an internship with a local start-up, join a team of students exploring business ventures or collaborating on new ideas in one of UAB’s extracurricular programs, or complete a directed study in entrepreneurship.

Management
Effective managers are vital to the success of every organization-from small start-up companies to multi-national corporations.  Why? Because managers are the ones who skillfully coordinate and control the activities of the organization to achieve business goals.  At the core of good management is the need to know how to attract, motivate and reward the best and brightest people.  Management is also about effective alignment.  Organizations are complicated systems that rely on the effective coordination of people, technology and organizational processes to be successful.  Managers drive this alignment through their skills of strategic thinking, strong communications and employee motivation to create business value.

Today’s business environment requires graduates who can effectively evaluate and make decisions, lead employees and manage resources. Management is ideal for people who like big picture thinking, can understand how processes work, have a passion for problem-solving and who can multi-task effectively to help create value for the organization. Management is also a great place to start for entrepreneurs interested in starting their own businesses.

Civil Engineering
Creative thinkers like you are essential to establishing and maintaining the framework of productive communities, from roads and buildings to air quality and soil erosion control. In our program, we can teach you how to design, construct, and evaluate all kinds of infrastructure as a civil engineer.

Your road to a career will begin with an intensive curriculum that includes structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, and construction engineering management. Plus, you can choose the Sustainable Engineering Design and Concentration to earn more experience in this growing area of civil engineering. Best of all, we offer study-abroad trips so you can earn academic credit while exploring a new culture. Interested in teaching? You can earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach. You can also lead in professional student organizations, participate in student competitions, and build valuable technical expertise and skills.

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers a broad-based major in civil engineering. The program covers:

• Mechanics and structures,
• Soils,
• Surveying,
• Transportation,
• Water resources,
• Environmental engineering, and
• Construction engineering management.

Study computer science, and you'll learn how to analyze a problem and find a computational solution. A BS in Computer Science can help you prepare for a career in software development, programming, research, network administration, web development, and much more.

With 48 hours of computer science courses, the Bachelor of Science (BS) offers students a more technical route than the Bachelor of Arts (BA), which requires 36 hours. Your coursework will include math and natural sciences, and core courses such as Discrete Structures, Automated and Formal Languages, and Programming Languages will give you a foundation in designing, building, and understanding computer-based systems, processes, and programs. Honors students may wish to research, write, and publish a formal scientific report or give an oral presentation. You'll even be able to earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach and apply your STEM knowledge in the classroom.

Students who successfully complete an INTO UAB Graduate Pathway program in computer science are assured progression to a UAB graduate degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. After successfully completing the Pathway program, you are guaranteed to enter the graduate degree program. This transition to university from an INTO program is called progression.

Computer Science
You may already feel like a computer expert, but in this program, you will find that you have more to learn about big data, cyber security, mobile applications, and other trending topics related to software engineering, analytical, database and other careers.

This program is open to students with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, such as engineering. There are computer science and math prerequisites necessary for this degree. Once they're done, you'll have 30 hours of coursework to do, which can be finished in 18 months if you're in school full time. You'll take classes such as Database Systems, Network Security, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. We'll also ask you to choose between two plan options, depending on what your goals are for your future. If you want to do research, continue your graduate studies, or pursue a professional program, you should pick Plan I (thesis option). For those interested in transitioning to the computer science field, Plan II (non-thesis option) is better. Your coursework here will include specializations in bioinformatics, computer graphics, and distributed computing.

The M.S. in Computer Science (MSCS) program is designed to provide advanced study opportunities for individuals who:

• Hold a bachelors degree in Computer Science and would like to advance their technical knowledge in the field and/or learn about research in Computer Science,
• Hold a bachelors degree in another field and want to make a career transition to the computing field, or
• Currently work in the computing field and wish to obtain a graduate degree for career advancement

Political Science
In political science, we teach you how American government and politics compare with the rest of the world. This major is an excellent option if your career interests are either political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy, political research, foreign diplomacy, law, journalism, or education.

To get you started, we'll give you an overview of American government, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and data and policy. Then, your advisor will help you choose between a line of study that's focused on the United States and one that's more internationally centered. At that point, you'll be able to tailor your curriculum with your goals in mind, search for appropriate internships, and even potentially get one-on-one faculty mentoring through the honors program.

African American Studies
The BA in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary program examining African life and culture, both on the African continent and the diaspora. As a student, you will learn about the African and African American experience from different perspectives including English, history, political science, sociology, and public health.

We are committed to educating and providing our students with knowledge and critical thinking skills to:

• Address social justice issues,
• Promote the diversity of ideas, and
• Understand the experiences, traditions, and history of African descended people.

The BS in Public Health degree offers a broad overview of public health research and practice, introducing you to the multiple focus areas within public health (e.g., epidemiology, health behavior, health policy). Our students also gain hands-on experience working with community partners to improve the health of populations. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the BS in Public Health degree is designed to prepare students to:

• Identify key health challenges facing a community, based on evaluation and synthesis of public health information.
• Recognize the importance of evidence-based strategies to address public health challenges facing a community.
• Advocate for improved health in the community, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences.

As a musical theatre student, you'll learn about acting, voice, singing, music, movement, and dance. Whether you want to be an actor, singer, dancer, or another performance artist, we will show you the ins-and-outs of working in theatre in New York, Los Angeles, or elsewhere.

Your entry into musical theatre begins with an Introduction to Theatre or an Introduction to Dance, followed by coursework designed to further develop your dance skills. You'll begin to apply these skills through musical theatre performances, acting, theatre technology, and other experiences, such as our NYC Showcase course. Finally, you'll participate in at least four main stage productions per year, plus studio productions. In the end, you will have had both hands-on and classroom experience in many different areas of musical theatre.
