Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and problem-solving techniques to biology and medicine. BME knowledge and skills play important roles in modern healthcare — from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery, and from the proliferation of implantable medical devices (such as pacemakers and artificial hips) to more futuristic technologies (such as stem cell engineering and 3D printing of biological organs).

Biomedical engineers differ from other engineering disciplines that have an influence on human health. How? Biomedical engineers use and apply an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles in their engineering design process. Subdisciplines in BME include design and development of active and passive medical devices, orthopedic implants, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, tissue and stem cell engineering, and clinical engineering, just to name a few.

Psychology
Psychology is the science of mind and behavior. With a thorough knowledge of psychology, you can offer great value in a wide variety of fields, including business, advertising, politics, law, education, and mental health counseling.

But first, you need to have a solid foundation of psychology theory in order to understand why people do what they do. That's why we begin your education with courses such as Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Brain, Mind, and Behavior. Then we'll take your education outside the classroom by giving you the chance to complete a research project or community service. Best of all, you could get the opportunity to gain real-world experience by participating in professional shadowing at a nearby treatment facility.

Chemistry
Chemistry connects the basic sciences with all of the applied sciences, including medicine and engineering. Sociology is the scientific study of human behavior. If you want to understand social behavior in the real world, sociology is where you find the answers. From large-scale social processes occurring in the wider society beyond the individual to the dynamics of social interaction within small groups, sociology investigates the complexities of human social relationships. Regardless of your chosen career path, having a critical understanding of the social world will put you at the forefront of your career field!

Graduates of sociology have gone on to careers in administration and management (in government, private business, and nonprofit organizations), marketing, sales, politics, communications, social services (youth, senior, and poverty), corrections/investigation (local, state, and federal), and public relations, just to name a few. In addition, a degree in sociology can help prepare you for many professional degree programs when paired with one of the pre-professional programs at UAB. Sociology graduates have gone on to law, business, and medical school.

Engineering Management

The Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) is a joint degree between the School of Engineering and the Collat School of Business.

The MSEM program is designed to further develop the technical, managerial, and professional capabilities of engineering graduates, preparing them for earlier entry into positions of leadership within a wide variety of industries and organizational types. The technical engineering coursework emphasizes a systems-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems. The managerial and professional coursework helps develop business acumen, strategic thinking, and professional work habits that are the hallmark of excellence in engineering.

So what exactly goes in a degree in engineering design? For one, our program includes a 15-hour engineering design and innovation core as the backbone to your education. It’s a three-course progression in engineering design as well as a two-semester capstone project. Plus we’re going to load your noodle up with all the fundamental math, science, physics, and engineering skills that you’ll need to embark on your career.

In order to succeed, every business has to have an accountant like you keeping track of its resources. Our faculty can give you the financial training you need for a career at a public accounting firm, company, governmental agency, not-for-profit organization, or elsewhere.

In fact, we're among an elite group of universities worldwide to achieve the seal of excellence in both business and accounting from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In addition to your core classes, you can choose concentration classes in forensic accounting or information technology. We also offer an accelerated master’s program, where you can complete graduate level courses while you’re still an undergrad and put yourself on track to earn your CPA. Finally, with our internship opportunities, you'll have the chance to get real-world experience before you graduate.

If you're interested in learning how peace can make a difference in individuals, families, communities, and nations, consider earning an MA in Anthropology of Peace and Human Rights. Our graduates go on to careers in law, teaching, public service, international affairs, business, and journalism.

At UAB, we've never been more focused on peace, justice, human rights, and ecology than we are right now. It's why we established the UAB Institute for Human Rights. It's also why, in 2017, we established this program. It's a two-year master's program with coursework in social and cultural anthropology, archaeology, and biological anthropology. As a student, you'll work with your advisor to choose one of two plans necessary to complete your degree. With Plan 1 (thesis), you'll take five elective courses (15 semester hours) and enroll in six semester hours of thesis credit. If your goal is to earn your PhD, this is the better option for you. With Plan 2 (non-thesis option), you'll take seven elective courses (21 semester hours), and we'll require you to pass a comprehensive final exam before graduation.

With an understanding of other people and their cultures, you'll be prepared for a career in a variety of fields, including international business, law, teaching, forensic science, language interpretation, environmental conservation, or even museum curation.

To enhance your degree, we offer the opportunity to complete an honors program, study abroad, or design your own personalized program.
