Engineering Management

The Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) is a joint degree between the School of Engineering and the Collat School of Business.

The MSEM program is designed to further develop the technical, managerial, and professional capabilities of engineering graduates, preparing them for earlier entry into positions of leadership within a wide variety of industries and organizational types. The technical engineering coursework emphasizes a systems-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to solving complex problems. The managerial and professional coursework helps develop business acumen, strategic thinking, and professional work habits that are the hallmark of excellence in engineering.

Art
Want to take a deep dive into a specific arts discipline designed to bring out the creative genius inside you? This intensive fine arts program can give you a solid foundation for graduate school or prepare you for a career in graphic design, medical illustration, costume design, cinematography—the possibilities are practically endless.

We'll teach you the techniques of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, new media, and other art forms. But we'll take it one step further by preparing you for a career. We'll show you the business side of being an artist, with courses such as Professionalism, Project Management, and Entrepreneurship. And when your days in our program near their end, you'll participate in an exhibit at UAB's Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts to highlight your undergraduate journey and celebrate your accomplishments.

Students who successfully complete an INTO UAB Graduate Pathway program in civil engineering are assured progression to a UAB graduate engineering degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. After successfully completing the Pathway program, you are guaranteed to enter the graduate degree program. This transition to university from an INTO program is called progression.

Civil Engineering
A master of science in civil engineering equips engineers to advance in various industrial or academic career fields that emphasize high-level and collaborative research. An M.S. in civil engineering can serve as a step toward a Ph.D. in engineering, or it can provide the experience and credentials needed to increase competiveness in the job market.

Our infrastructure demands the attentive eye of someone like you to sustain productive communities, from our roads, buildings, and dams to air quality and wastewater treatment—and even traffic patterns. At UAB, we can give you the engineering, design, and planning background you need to be a leader in civil engineering.

To prepare you for your career, we've designed a program that you can tailor based on your interests and goals. We have four concentrations for you to choose from, including construction engineering management, in which you can learn about cost and revenue estimating, risk, and more. Plus you can choose a thesis option, non-thesis option with an emphasis on research and design, or a non-thesis option with an emphasis on sustainable engineering design. But no matter which you choose, you're going to need to both complete a comprehensive exam and defend either your research project or thesis in order to graduate. Finally, we're going to offer you the opportunity to earn a certificate in environmental, structural, sustainable, and transportation engineering, or engineering construction management. In the end, you'll have the best chance at an education designed to meet your specific career goals.

Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is an emerging field that involves managing and analyzing large amounts of data about living things—data that will help us treat human diseases and make breakthroughs that will improve our lives. Graduates launch careers as data analysts, software engineers, research specialists, computational biologists, and data managers.

In fact, we specifically designed our bioinformatics program to prepare you for a wide range of career paths. We give you a solid foundation that includes biology, computer science, public health, math, genetics, and chemistry, as well as seminars, electives, and a capstone project. Then we show you how to put your knowledge to use with research projects, access to resources, internships, opportunities to study abroad, and other activities.

International studies will give you an in-depth knowledge of what's happening around the world, letting you focus your courses on specific areas that interest you. We'll help prepare you for a career in a variety of fields, including international relations, business, journalism, economics, politics, diplomacy, and much more.

The number one asset you'll need for success is a keen understanding of today's world economy. That's why we offer you the option to focus on a variety of areas, including Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Your curriculum will cover such topics as economics, socio-political awareness, and cultural literacy. We'll help you line up a study-abroad opportunity, participation in the Model Arab League, an internship with an international business, or another experience.

Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the body's nervous system—or in other words, how the brain shares information throughout the body. A degree in this program can help you prepare for a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology, or most health-related fields.

Because this program is a partnership between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, you'll have a diverse course offering that includes biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and neurobiology. Furthermore, this program satisfies most prerequisite course requirements for those looking to go on to medical school or to pursue another career in health care. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to earn a general science teaching certification through UABTeach and have a chance to collaborate and research with a faculty member on campus.

Materials engineering is a highly diverse field with applications connected to virtually all scientific disciplines. Therefore, the Master of Science program at UAB is a viable option for students whose background includes a baccalaureate degree from other engineering fields or from any number of physical science disciplines.

Prospective students should demonstrate competence in fields of study that emphasize structure, processing, performance, and properties of materials.

As a philosophy student, you won't just study ideas and thoughts related to these questions, you'll study critical thinking, problem solving, and how to analyze and argue. We want this foundation to help you excel in fields such as medicine, law, journalism, politics, business, and more.

Interested in graduate school? According to the Educational Testing Service, philosophy majors earn higher GRE scores than students from any other discipline. It's no wonder, considering the lengths we go to in preparing you. Not only will we teach you the methods, history, and problems in philosophy, but we'll train you to apply this knowledge in the field. Best of all, because you have your own unique goals, we'll help you customize a curriculum to fit your needs. If you choose the ethics concentration, your coursework will concentrate on ethical issues and social issues.

History
Students decide to become History majors for many different reasons. Maybe you are curious about the Revolutionary War because of Hamilton. Or maybe you grew up in Alabama and want to know more about the state or Birmingham. Perhaps you saw a TV show about how aliens built the pyramids (they didn’t, btw), or you find gladiators or Nazis fascinating. Or, maybe you just want skills that employers are looking for. In the History department, we teach all these things and so much more.

One of the best things about a major in History is that the degree is flexible and can be tailored to your interests. Once you’ve finished two introductory sequences (U.S. history and either World History or Western Civ.), the majority of your classes are going to be courses that you want to take and fit into your schedule. Only two other courses are mandatory—HY 300, which teaches historical research and writing skills, and HY 497 (the capstone) where you work with a professor on a project of your choosing.

The Master of Arts degree in Art History offered jointly with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, is the only art history graduate program in the state. The M.A. degree in Art History prepares students for further academic study at the doctoral level or for professional careers in teaching, museums, galleries, and other arts-related fields. Students may enroll on either campus and must take at least 6 hours of course work on the other campus.

The M.A. program offers a wide range of art history courses and graduate seminars. Each student must take ARH 680 (Methods and Approaches to the History of Art). The M.A. program offers specialized study in Medieval Art, Early Modern Art, Eighteenth-Century/Nineteenth-Century Art, Twentieth-Century/Contemporary Art, South Asian Art, and East Asian Art. The small size of the program affords graduate students the opportunity to work closely with individual faculty members on both campuses in seminars and directed research projects. The M.A. in Art History provides students with a thorough grounding in art history, critical thinking, and research methods.
