The UAB Department of Physics offers a rigorous but flexible undergraduate program that emphasizes both depth and breadth in order to meet the demands of tomorrow’s technology-based research and education global scenes.

In order for our students to develop the skills that employers desire and that Grand Challenge interdisciplinary research problems demand, the UAB Department of Physics offers five different undergraduate tracks designed to help students achieve their career goals not only in traditional physics, but also in closely-related engineering, STEM, teaching, computational, and medical fields.

Civil Engineering
Creative thinkers like you are essential to establishing and maintaining the framework of productive communities, from roads and buildings to air quality and soil erosion control. In our program, we can teach you how to design, construct, and evaluate all kinds of infrastructure as a civil engineer.

Your road to a career will begin with an intensive curriculum that includes structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, and construction engineering management. Plus, you can choose the Sustainable Engineering Design and Concentration to earn more experience in this growing area of civil engineering. Best of all, we offer study-abroad trips so you can earn academic credit while exploring a new culture. Interested in teaching? You can earn a teaching certification in mathematics through UABTeach. You can also lead in professional student organizations, participate in student competitions, and build valuable technical expertise and skills.

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers a broad-based major in civil engineering. The program covers:

Chemistry
The UAB Department of Chemistry provides students with the education and practical experience they need to participate in new scientific frontiers. From our unique peer learning and teaching program to our world-class faculty and state-of-the-art research facilities, UAB Chemistry advances the boundaries of chemical scholarship and discoveries.
Chemistry connects the basic sciences with all of the applied sciences, including medicine and engineering. The foundations of the world’s economy in the next generation, including advanced materials, fuels, energy, nanomaterials, medicines, sensors, biotechnology, and genomics, will all have chemistry at their core. As a result, a degree in chemistry opens the door to a wide variety of careers, such as medicine, pharmacy, health professions, forensics, and research. Accounting
In order to succeed, every business has to have an accountant like you keeping track of its resources. Our faculty can give you the financial training you need for a career at a public accounting firm, company, governmental agency, not-for-profit organization, or elsewhere.

In fact, we're among an elite group of universities worldwide to achieve the seal of excellence in both business and accounting from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In addition to your core classes, you can choose concentration classes in forensic accounting or information technology. We also offer an accelerated master’s program, where you can complete graduate level courses while you’re still an undergrad and put yourself on track to earn your CPA. Finally, with our internship opportunities, you'll have the chance to get real-world experience before you graduate.

Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the body's nervous system—or in other words, how the brain shares information throughout the body. A degree in this program can help you prepare for a career in academic or government research, medicine, biotechnology, or most health-related fields.

Because this program is a partnership between the Department of Neurobiology in the School of Medicine and the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, you'll have a diverse course offering that includes biology, chemistry, math, physics, psychology, and neurobiology. Furthermore, this program satisfies most prerequisite course requirements for those looking to go on to medical school or to pursue another career in health care. Finally, you'll have an opportunity to earn a general science teaching certification through UABTeach and have a chance to collaborate and research with a faculty member on campus.

Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. By understanding this universal language, you'll have problem-solving abilities that are useful in business, engineering, medicine, technology, and a seemingly infinite number of other fields.

In fact, many mathematics grads go on to work at NASA, Bell Labs, and even the National Security Agency. But to get there, you have to start here, with subjects like differential equations, advanced calculus, and mathematical modeling. If you're looking to further your education, consider our mathematics accelerated master's program, where you can complete both your bachelor's and master's in only four years. Interested in teaching? Earn a teaching certificate along with your degree through UABTeach.

Students who successfully complete a Graduate Pathway program in Public Administration are assured progression to a nationally-ranked UAB graduate degree program upon submission of additional required application materials. Public Administration
If you're interested in the public sector, this is definitely a degree for you to consider. We have numerous graduates who've gone on to serve in government—one was a major party candidate in Alabama's 2018 governor race. Complete the program, and you could be next.

As you begin your education, it's best to have an idea of your career goals. Our 39-hour curriculum includes a choice between two concentrations: nonprofit management and public management and planning. With nonprofit management, we'll teach you about fundraising and development, grant management, and program evaluation. If you choose public management and planning, you'll learn about preparing and managing budgets, economic development, and community development at the federal, state, and local level. No matter which concentration you pick, however, you'll need to choose between a thesis or a non-thesis track. Best of all, we've designed the entire program to fit your professional schedule. Many classes are offered in the evening, while others are a mix of online and face-to-face instruction.

Students joining our Integrated Master Program (IMP) will benefit from a degree-seeking I-20 while still receiving the additional support provided by INTO UAB, from the day they apply through their first semester on campus. Pre-arrival questions get answered. Travel fears get addressed. Help with everything from tutoring to career guidance—at the ready for IMP students.

If so, the UAB Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Master of Science program that may be just what you're looking for to enhance your academic or professional engineering credentials.

Mechanical engineering is a broad-based discipline, and graduate students will have opportunities to explore a number of research areas where they will work alongside nationally and internationally known faculty mentors. The ME department offers a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree, including both Thesis and non-Thesis options.
