Students majoring in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology may opt for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or Bachelor of Science degree. Both B.A. and B.S. degree candidates must complete the following courses in addition to the general CLAS requirements for these degrees: BIOL 1107 and BIOL 1108 or 1110; and CHEM 1127Q and 1128Q; or CHEM 1124Q, 1125Q, and 1126Q.

The Department of Statistics offers work leading to degrees in theoretical and applied statistics.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Statistics and Mathematics-Statistics. The latter is offered jointly with the Mathematics Department.

The Statistics major requires 24 credits at the 2000-level or above in statistics, including STAT 3115Q, 3375Q, 3445, and 3675Q. A maximum of three credits from each of STAT 4190, 4299 and 4389 may count toward the 24-credit requirement. Since STAT 3375Q has MATH 2110Q or 2130Q as a prerequisite, students should begin the calculus sequence as soon as possible. In addition, at least 12 credits at the 2000-level or above in approved related areas are required. MATH 2210Q or 3210 is strongly recommended and can count towards the related credits.

Students without mathematical background who wish some skill in statistical methodology should take STAT 1100Q followed by 2215Q. Students interested in the statistical analysis of business and economic data should take STAT 1000Q followed by 2215Q. Students with the appropriate calculus prerequisite should take STAT 3025Q rather than STAT 1000Q or 1100Q and 2215Q. STAT 3115Q and 3515Q are appropriate continuations for each of these three introductory sequences. STAT 3025Q is recommended before STAT 3375Q–3445.

To satisfy the information literacy competency and writing in the major requirement, statistics majors must take STAT 3494W. STAT 3494W does not count towards the 24 required major credits in Statistics, nor the 40 required major credits in Mathematics-Statistics.

Robotics is a multidisciplinary field that draws on aspects from electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer engineering. The proposed curriculum is built around fundamental core courses in each of these areas that are then brought together with specific robotics engineering courses. The Robotics Engineering program educational objectives are that our alumni/ae:

• make technical contributions to design, development, and manufacturing in their practice of robotics engineering.
• advance in their professional career.
• engage in professional development or post-graduate education to pursue flexible career paths amid future technological changes.

The undergraduate program of study is designed with sufficient breadth and depth to enable our graduates to work successfully in industry or government, or to continue studies in graduate school.

The electrical engineering curriculum provides a firm foundation in fundamentals, while also giving students exposure to current technologies for design and implementation. It strives for a balance between theory, laboratory and design experience. In the first two years of study, students are given a broad foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer programming, applied mechanics, communication skills and humanities. Introductory courses in computer science and electric circuit analysis are also taken in the sophomore year. In the final two years, students build upon their earlier course work, taking a set of required EE courses intended to provide the core knowledge expected of every electrical engineer.

A student in consultation with his or her advisor chooses a number of electrical engineering professional elective courses, and various elective courses in the humanities and social sciences. The professional elective courses taken give the student expertise in an area of specialization in electrical engineering, or allow him or her to explore topics of individual interest. Areas of specialization in electrical engineering include: biomedical engineering, electronic circuits and instrumentation, microelectronics, systems, and telecommunications. The Management & Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) major is an unique academic program that belongs to both the School of Engineering and the School of Business, who jointly award a BS degree.

UConn’s Management and Engineering for Manufacturing (MEM) Program is built upon a simple philosophy: to be effective, technological innovations in manufacturing must be applied to a streamlined and simplified operating environment. Through their studies and internships in the MEM Program, students develop a thorough understanding of the interrelationships among the different areas of a manufacturing enterprise. An integrated education provides a competitive advantage in the manufacturing arena, in which applications of subject matter from business and engineering are equally important.

Located in the heart of the insurance industry, Healthcare Management at UConn provides students with exceptional educational opportunities to pursue careers in the growing field of healthcare management and insurance. The major is small and personalized. Courses cover topics such as risk management, health economics, healthcare finance, human resource management, and insurance. Professional work experience through an internship program and job placement assistance provides graduates with the skills to become the next generation of business leaders in the healthcare and insurance industries.

The Environmental Studies major is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives needed to understand the interactions between human society and the environment. Understanding the ethical and cultural dimensions of our relationship with the environment, as well as the challenges of protecting it, requires insights from multiple perspectives, including the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Core courses in the major ensure familiarity with basic principles from these three areas. With this shared core of knowledge, majors will focus their studies on an area of special interest, taking electives and related courses that allow greater specialization. Among the many possibilities are environmental sustainability, issues concerning public policy and environmental justice, and the literary and philosophical legacy of human encounters with the non-human world. A capstone course will allow each student to research a distinct perspective on a contemporary environmental issue. A major in Environmental Studies might lead to a career in a variety of fields, including public policy, environmental education, eco-tourism, marketing or consulting, journalism, or advocacy.

The major leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) or the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (CAHNR). The student’s choice of colleges should be made in consultation with faculty and advisors based upon the student’s interests and career goals.

It is the primary objective of the Vocal Performance program to seek committed and promising young singers and to develop in them a firm foundation in the vocal arts of performance and pedagogy. Our program utilizes training in art song and opera to foster the development of a lifetime commitment to creativity and communication, nurturing the responsibility in our students of contributing to the society in which they live. Our faculty work cooperatively to develop our young artists into working professionals. Through performances of operas and opera-scenes programs, song festivals, public recitals, master classes, and community-outreach programs, students acquire the needed experience and growth necessary for attaining a career in the arts.

Our working relationships with opera companies, interdisciplinary performance symposiums, and international collaborations with conservatories abroad augment the educational experience of our students and assist them in building a network of professional contacts before embarking on their future careers. Artists and professionals with whom students have had the opportunity to observe, meet, and even work with include: sopranos Renee Fleming and Leontyne Price; mezzo-sopranos Joyce DiDonato and Denyce Graves; tenors Jerry Hadley and Anthony Laciura; conductors Willie Anthony Waters and Doris Kosloff; stage director Gina Lapinski; repetiteur Dennis Giauque; composer Jake Heggie; Joseph McClain, founder and former director of the Austin Lyric Opera; Anthony Tommasini, chief music critic of the New York Times; and Marc A. Sorca, president and CEO of OPERA America.

Productions on campus, as well as televised performances, and other forms of outreach support our related goal of bringing the arts to the greater public by making them accessible to the community. These events provide valuable performing experience to our students while also teaching them the joy of enriching others’ lives through creative expression.

Geoscience emerged from the historic core discipline of geology, which focused on the rocks, fossils, and mineral resources of the solid earth, and of the past.  Within the last half-century, extraordinary technological advances have shifted the spatial scale to the whole of the planet, and the time scale to include the present Anthropocene Epoch and future we must prepare for.

Students can enter the Program either from the beginning classes of our language program or, if they already have enough French, move right into upper-level courses.  The major requires the completion of 30 credits at the 3000 level. (Major.doc)

Our program gives our majors a choice of specialization: French Cultural and Literary Studies or French Studies for the Global Community.

Track I, French Studies for the Global Community, is built on the premise that, in the era of globalization, the role of the economy permeates all aspects of contemporary cultural and political life. It is posited on the notion that as culture becomes more global, it reaches across diverse cultures and languages. This is one of the reasons why translation and the theory of translation are particularly crucial components of this tract, as necessary complement to the studies of business, media, and world culture generally.

Track II, French Cultural and Literary Studies, focuses on literature in new ways, in keeping with recent reflection on the way literature actually functions in society. Controversial issues that have shaped the debates in French culture include sexuality, gender, race, the value of popular culture, the role of film, and video, electronic writing, and the paradoxes of globalization, among others. The pleasure of reading and writing about literature is an essential feature of this track, but the understanding of literature is enhanced when viewing it within a larger sociopolitical and cultural context.
