Anthropology studies human beings of all times and places. It examines human biological, cultural and social similarities and differences, and tries to explain them. Because of its broad perspective — which stresses writing, critical thinking, and social analysis — anthropology provides an excellent preparation for a variety of professional and business careers. Anthropology can also be an integral part of the training for life that is the goal of the University’s liberal arts program.

Marketing at UConn is distinguished by the integration of experiential learning and the latest insights from academic research. You develop conceptual, analytical, leadership, communication, and creative skills through case discussions and memos, writing marketing plans, in-class exercises, and company projects. You learn the academic evidence for “what works” in marketing from leading scholars in the field.

UConn students have a number of opportunities to develop specialized skills in marketing, to do an internship to practice what they learn, and to participate in academic research. Marketing majors can earn a concentration in Digital Marketing & Analytics or Professional Sales Leadership.

Music theory is concerned with how music works, and uses analysis to identify musical relationships, structures, and the procedures composers follow in the process of creating music. In seeking a deeper understanding of music, theorists employ analytic methods and modes of inquiry similar to those used in other disciplines, such as language study, literary criticism, mathematics, and psychology.

Whereas some study of music theory is required for all music majors, those with an emphasis in theory at the undergraduate level combine studies in performance, history, and other subjects with upper-level courses in music analysis and related topics. Advanced study in theory is useful for performers, conductors, composers, and other musicians who seek to elevate the level of their artistry.

This program produces graduates with a broad perspective in both software and hardware topics pertinent to computing systems. It provides the foundation and specialized knowledge necessary to analyze, design and evaluate system software, utility programs and software-hardware architectures. The program is supported by study in mathematics, science, and engineering. This allows students to design hardware and software solutions for a wide variety of application domains. Students gain hands-on experience in the laboratory courses accompanying classroom work, and develop design skills in course work beginning in the first two years. Design experience continues in junior and senior years in the areas of software engineering and in applications areas of the student’s choosing, culminating in the one semester Senior Design Project course

The Management major is focused on the development of the necessary skills to lead others, work well in teams, think entrepreneurially, and develop a strategic vision. Most of the complex problems we face in the business world today, whether they impact business or society at large, require the coordination of individuals, teams, and organizations to arrive at a solution. In management we strive to have our students ready to solve today’s and tomorrow’s complex business problems.

The Department of Management offers two core courses; managerial and interpersonal behaviors (MGMT 3101) and strategic management (MGMT 4900) along with elective courses in international business, entrepreneurship, management consulting, venture consulting, negotiations, managing a diverse workforce, and managing human capital. Students may follow the entrepreneurship concentration curriculum, or choose to pursue an area of emphasis in managing consulting, human capital management, or international business.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting at the University of Connecticut is an intensive, conservatory-style program designed to prepare students for direct entry into performance careers in all areas of professional theatre, including television and film. Students are also thoroughly prepared to continue acting studies at the graduate, Master of Fine Arts level. Combining a four-year sequence of acting classes with extensive voice and movement training and a well-rounded course of studies in the art of theatre, the BFA Acting Program also offers outstanding performance opportunities through the Connecticut Repertory Theatre (CRT), the performance wing of the Department of Dramatic Arts. At the CRT, students work with professional actors and directors on the way to earning membership points in Actor's Equity, the American union for professional stage actors and stage managers.

The major in Environmental Sciences is based in the physical and biological sciences, but also includes course work in selected areas of the social sciences. The major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree, and may be adopted by students in either the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. This curriculum offers a comprehensive approach to the study of environmental problems, including not only a rigorous scientific background, but also detailed analyses of the social and economic implications of environmental issues. The complexity and interdisciplinary nature of environmental science is reflected in the core requirements of the major. These courses, assembled from several different academic departments representing two colleges, provide both breadth and depth, preparing students for careers that deal with environmental issues and for graduate study in environmental sciences and related fields.

Located in the heart of the insurance industry, Healthcare Management at UConn provides students with exceptional educational opportunities to pursue careers in the growing field of healthcare management and insurance. The major is small and personalized. Courses cover topics such as risk management, health economics, healthcare finance, human resource management, and insurance. Professional work experience through an internship program and job placement assistance provides graduates with the skills to become the next generation of business leaders in the healthcare and insurance industries.

The Department offers both Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics, Applied Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics-Statistics, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science, and Mathematics-Actuarial Science-Finance, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics-Physics. The Bachelor of Science program provides in-depth training in Mathematics as preparation for graduate study or for participation in scientific and engineering teams in government, industry, or research laboratories. The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed to provide training in contemporary mathematics without the depth and concentrated specialization required for the Bachelor of Science program. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program in Art & Design is designed to provide an enriched educational environment that develops and nurtures the full range of capabilities necessary for a career in the visual arts. Skills addressed include: a mastery of requisite technical skills, the use of technology across the curriculum, experience in critical and creative problem solving, visual literacy, knowledge of historical modes of expression in the visual arts, and mastery of written modes of expression.

After Foundations courses, students declare a concentration in which to focus their advanced studies. Once a concentration is declared students follow that concentration's prescribed Plan of Study.
