The department offers a wide variety of coursework, with an emphasis on cultural, biological, and archaeological anthropology. ?The program focuses on normal communication, its impairment, and rehabilitation of children and adults who have disorders of speech, hearing, and language. It introduces basic speech, language, and hearing science in preparation for graduate study in such areas as acoustic phonetics, psychological and physical acoustics, and psycholinguistics. It also includes pre-professional coursework for students who wish to undertake graduate programs leading to careers as speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Students have the opportunity to observe clinical practice in the Queens College Speech-Language-Hearing Center.

A knowledge of German is essential for students interested in past and current cultural, political, and economic developments in Europe. As the largest trading partner in Europe, Germany plays a leading role in European and world affairs—as it has historically. Moreover, the German language is fundamental to a liberal arts education. German-speaking writers, artists, and scholars shaped modern arts, literature, and fields of inquiry, including philosophy, theology, and the natural and social sciences. Germany remains a center of avant-garde art, music, film, and thought. Coursework emphasizes both language proficiency and the study of German literature, art, music, philosophy, history, and culture.

Linguistics involves the study of language. For students interested in general linguistics, that means studying the formal properties of language, language variation, processes of language acquisition, and ways that language affects thought and action. Graduates, who become adept at both the scientific method and professional-quality writing, acquire the solid foundation to continue their studies at the graduate level—whether in classic disciplines like linguistics, anthropology, or psychology or professional programs like law or information science.

Students interested in applied linguistics, with the aim of Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL), learn to teach English in elementary and secondary schools. The program gives them the opportunity to learn as a student-teacher and gain field experience.

An interdisciplinary, research-based degree, the Queens College Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience is a collaboration between the Biology and Psychology departments, providing students with a unique blend of theoretical and hands-on experience.

Labor studies is an interdisciplinary field concerning the world of work, workers, and employment. Students gain an understanding of the labor force, workers’ organizations, and labor-management relations.

Coursework covers such core material as technology, labor, industry, and occupations; the labor force; the labor movement; and theories of work, the workplace, and organization. Students concentrate in economics, sociology, or urban studies, developing skills in those areas and learning to perform quantitative analysis.

A degree in labor studies prepares graduates to pursue careers in labor relations, whether working for labor organizations, business, or government. In addition, it can be a stepping stone to law or graduate school.

Additionally, our program has a network of internships that allow students to get real-world design experience while receiving college credit and building their resume.

The interdisciplinary major is designed for students who wish to develop their own concentration area in a subject not covered by any one department or program. Students who are interested in an interdisciplinary major should confer with the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies, which will provide guidance in developing a proposal for approval. The proposed concentration must have a distinct, coherent interdisciplinary theme and the coursework required for it should provide substantial expertise in that theme. Since an interdisciplinary concentration requires competence in more than one discipline, the major involves a minimum of 36 credits and may require the approval of several departments.
