Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGS) is an interdisciplinary field that explores the experiences of women and the many ways that gender works throughout everyone’s lives. Gender shapes our identities, how we are perceived socially and our opportunities in life.

At Northeastern Illinois University, we approach our studies through intersections of feminist, anti-racist, multicultural, global and ecological perspectives. We examine how power is distributed and used along the intersections of race, class, gender, geography, age, abilities and sexualities.

We work together to create an environment of learning and passionate commitment to social justice. Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies is not just about learning facts and theories, but also about praxis—using our knowledge to become practitioners, researchers, learners, leaders and activists. We work to develop and implement meaningful social change within the University and beyond.

Master of Science in Accounting

The Accounting MS Program prepares students for the changing accounting profession of the new millennium. The Accounting MS Program provides students with a balanced, rigorous, and in-depth core-course exposure that covers financial accounting, managerial accounting, auditing, income taxation, and research methodology. The Accounting MS program also exposes students to non-accounting fields so that graduates from the program can make decisions in multi-disciplinary business environments. In addition, the program enables students to meet the 150 credit hours requirement for the CPA exam in the states which have enacted this legislation. The program consists of curricular studies of 30 credit hours in the Accounting Core and Elective Curriculum.

Northeastern Illinois University offers a two-phase Master of Science in Accounting program.

  • The first phase consists of a set of foundation courses, some or all of which may be waived depending on your prior academic preparation. If your bachelor's degree is not in accounting, you will also need to show proficiency in six undergraduate prerequisite courses: Cost Accounting, Auditing Theory and Problems, Federal Income Tax (Individual), Intermediate Financial Accounting I, Intermediate Financial Accounting II and Business Calculus. You may demonstrate proficiency either through competent coursework or by passing a proficiency examination. Please note that these six courses are program prerequisites. They are not part of the M.S. in Accounting program and cannot be applied to the degree requirements.
  • The second phase is made up of 30 hours of advanced core courses and is required of all students in the program. Among these advanced courses are six hours of accounting elective classes and nine hours of non-accounting elective classes.

“The primary purpose of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being. Social workers help meet the basic human needs of all people and empower those who are vulnerable, oppressed or living in poverty. A historic and defining feature of social work is the profession’s dual focus on the individual in a social context and the betterment of society. Public Safety and Legal Studies

Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies

Northeastern Illinois University’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Justice Studies program gives students the opportunity to examine the social and historical roots of justice, crime, and the law. Students seek to discover how these roots have shaped public policies, including those of the criminal justice system, and study systematic explanations for the failure—or triumph—of justice in society and explore the potential for transformative justice.

Through critical inquiry, social science investigation, and experiential learning, Justice Studies students develop an understanding of social and economic justice issues and critical criminology. For instance, criminology examines the structural roots of crime and takes up the legal and social concerns of diverse, urban, low-income, and disenfranchised communities, whose members are often heavily targeted by the criminal justice system.
