Overview
The Department of Family & Consumer Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees and a cooperative master’s degree program. B.S. programs are offered in Nutrition and Wellness, Community and Family Services, and two tracks in Child Development. A B.S.E. program is offered in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The department has an Early Childhood Unified: Birth - Kindergarten program. The department offers minors in Child Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Ecology, Nutrition and Wellness, and Youth and Adolescent Development. The department also contributes to minors in Women’s Studies and Public Health.
Child Development - Emphasis
The Early Childhood Development program prepares individuals to work with children ages birth through eight in a variety of programs within the community.
Coursework:
Core courses such as Lifespan Human Development, Interacting with Children, Developmental Planning: Preschool and Kindergarten, Early Childhood Program Organization and Management, and Development of the Child: Birth-8 help provide a solid foundation of knowledge for early childhood professionals.
Students are able to tailor their program to fit their needs by selecting electives that help customize their program to match professional goals. All early childhood development students will select a minor that meets their interests and career goals. Suggested minors include but are not limited to: EC Special Education, Sociology, Psychology, Recreation, Spanish, and Business Administration.

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.
It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.
There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.
Cellular and Molecular Biology - Emphasis
Students in the Cellular and Molecular Biology emphasis will study cells and macromolecules, including DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. This emphasis provides students with a strong foundation in cell biology, molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry.
Graduates of this program will be prepared to contribute to the fields of global medicine and environmental issues. Professionals in these fields study the molecular basis of cancer and infectious disease, as well as the development of biofuels and genetic engineering of crops for improved disease resistance.

Bachelor of Science, Major in Communication with Emphasis in Multimedia Journalism
The Department of Communication offers a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science in Education, and Master of Arts degrees within a collaborative and collegial environment. Multimedia Journalism - Emphasis
Multimedia journalism prepares students for careers in the news industry. Students take classes in news reporting, broadcast journalism, photojournalism, online journalism, and media law and get practical experience through on-campus media outlets. Students in this area learn to collect information through interviewing sources, interpreting and organizing information, and presenting it to the public. MMJ students also learn about the rights and responsibilities of journalists in a free and open society. They find careers in digital media, radio, television, cable, print, and online news, as well as PR and other media-related fields.

Botany - Emphasis
How do plants grow and develop? What role do plants play in biodiversity? How do plants impact our physical environment? Students in the Botany emphasis will answer these questions and many more. Aimed at expanding current knowledge of plants and their importance in our world, the botany track helps students and graduates address major issues in the fields of agriculture, ecology, and horticulture.
The Botany emphasis is grounded in the basic sciences (general biology, chemistry, math, and physics) needed to understand the latest research in plant biology.

Ecology and Field Biology - Emphasis
The Ecology and Field Biology emphasis covers a wide range of topics, including physiological ecology, natural selection, population biology, ecosystem dynamics, and more. Combing both lab and field activities, this program gives students a hands-on, interactive look at the fascinating relationships between organisms.
This track is recommended for students pursuing a career and/or graduate study in ecology, evolutionary biology, environmental science, zoology, wildlife biology, conservation, and more.

Bachelor of Science in Social Work
Social Work is a practice-based profession which seeks to meet the basic needs of all people. Social workers help people at the individual, family, group, and community levels. Social workers practice in a wide variety of settings, with licensed positions at the bachelor level, master level, and clinical level.
The Bachelor of Science Degree with a Major in Social Work (BSW) prepares students for generalist practice in settings such as (but not limited to) child welfare, mental health, addictions, probation/parole, disability, health care, older adults/end of life, schools, and more. The BSW also prepares students for graduate school. Students who have a BSW from an accredited program are generally eligible for advanced standing in master of social work (MSW) programs. This means that after earning a BSW, a student may achieve an MSW in one additional calendar year.
A minor is not required for the social work major, but students frequently choose minors in Psychology, Public Health, Criminology, or Youth and Adolescence.

The Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation (HHPR) is located in the new Student Recreation Center. The HHPR faculty possess a wide array of specializations. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in Exercise Science, Recreation Services, Sport and Hospitality Management, and Physical Education, five minors and certificates in Dance, Coaching, and Hospitality Management, as well as a graduate program in HHPR. Within each of the degree programs, there are emphases/concentration areas from which students select the professional paths that best fit their needs.
Community and Worksite Wellness - Emphasis
An emphasis in Community and Worksite Wellness prepares students to advocate and create a culture of wellness both in a community setting as well as the workplace. Wellness coordinators often focus on healthy eating, physical activity, reduction in tobacco use, stress management, fitness programs, use of preventive screenings, programs and services, and improved physical environments, such as walking paths, healthy food choices, and nutritional information provided on site.
The job outlook for Health Educators and Community Health Workers is expected to grow much faster than average (16% from 2016-2026) as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (U.S. Department of Labor).

Theatre - Emphasis
Theatre prepares the individual for work in the arts and entertainment industry across a broad spectrum of areas such as performance, technical production, design, and/or management. Individuals graduating in this emphasis area also work in many tangential industries such as hotel/restaurant management, event planning, and facilities management. At PSU, the theatre program, stresses a liberal arts approach that trains each student across the entire discipline in state-of-the-art production facilities.
