The Department of Engineering Technology is housed in the Kansas Technology Center on the Pittsburg State University  campus. Engineering Technology Programs are comprised of elements of the technological spectrum requiring scientific and engineering knowledge plus the operational methods and skills devoted to achieving practical purpose in support of product producing industries.

The Department of English and Modern Languages offers baccalaureate degrees and a master’s degree program. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs are offered in English and in Modern Languages. A Bachelor of Science in Education and a master’s program are also offered in English. The department offers minors in English, English Teaching, Creative Writing, French, Professional Writing, and Spanish.

Professional Writing - Emphasis
If students want to write for business and technology, our newly-revised emphasis in Professional Writing is a perfect fit. In the English Program, we encourage our English majors in whatever endeavor they wish to pursue. Students who follow this emphasis are guided through classes that will promote their business acumen and professional marketability.

Our faculty will give students the tools for document design, web design, and publications. The classes that are offered include: Theories and Technologies of Writing, The Art of Discourse, and Writing for the Public. This emphasis culminates in a professional writing internship during students’ last semester, which will give them real world experience and portfolio material for a head start in their business ambitions.

The Master of Science in Technology is the most flexible of the College of Technology graduate programs because it can be tailored to address a wide range of career goals, based on emphasis selected. The Master of Science in Technology program provides advanced instruction in technical, scientific, managerial and supervisory areas for those working in technical and management positions in business and industry. The online degree program is designed for the full-time, workplace-bound individual.

The Master of Science in Technology program offers a 15-hour core of course work in research, global issues, leadership, quality systems and management, and statistics-based analysis; and one credit hour of assessment. Remaining nine hours of emphasis–related courses and nine hours of enrichment electives complete the 33-hour program to address candidates’ specific career goals. Candidates in program typically have undergraduate degree related to a specific technology area. Depending upon academic background and emphasis selected, candidates may be required to take pre-requisites or foundation course work.

The Master of Science in Mathematics degree provides for advanced study in mathematics. The program prepares students to teach at the community college level, a career in mathematics, or an advanced degree in mathematics.

At the graduate level, Pitt State offers an 18-hour Graduate Certificate in Mathematics and a Master of Science (MS) degree. The 18-hour Graduate Certificate in Mathematics is designed to certify that the recipients have a knowledge base in graduate mathematics requisite in a variety of areas, including collegiate level teaching.

We have undergraduate programs covering the range of modern biology including: pre-health (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-vet, pre-optometry, pre-physical therapy, pre-physician assistant), medical technology, cell and molecular biology, wildlife biology, fisheries and aquatic sciences, botany, ecology, and secondary education.

There are almost 400 students in the undergraduate program and about 20 in the graduate division. The Department of Biology has 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of interests. The faculty are dedicated and committed to Pittsburg State University and the department, but most importantly, to students. Most faculty are actively engaged in research activities, national professional organizations, and professional service.

Cellular and Molecular Biology - Emphasis
Students in the Cellular and Molecular Biology emphasis will study cells and macromolecules, including DNA, RNA, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. This emphasis provides students with a strong foundation in cell biology, molecular biology, microbiology, and biochemistry.

Graduates of this program will be prepared to contribute to the fields of global medicine and environmental issues. Professionals in these fields study the molecular basis of cancer and infectious disease, as well as the development of biofuels and genetic engineering of crops for improved disease resistance.

These technological skills, critical thinking skills, and the overall applied nature of a geography education provide students with abilities that are in demand at public and private agencies. Students also gain the expert knowledge and training they need to pursue admission to graduate programs, if that is part of their career plan.

Geography programs are part of History, Philosophy and Social Sciences department. The programs provide high-quality instruction to students in ways that emphasize active learning, problem solving, and critical thinking through transformative experiences.

International Studies - Emphasis
The Bachelor of Arts Degree with an Emphasis in International Studies, is a multi-disciplinary program, incorporating a variety of disciplines across colleges and departments within the Pittsburg State University community. Its core is Political Science, History, Geography, and Sociology with substantial contributions made by Economics, Management and Marketing, and Communication. In addition, a variety of other disciplines, such as Family and Consumer Sciences, English, and the Fine Arts provide important contributions. The major is designed to give students a core body of knowledge and basic skills necessary to live and work successfully in an increasingly interconnected world. The development of students' foreign language skills is a key component of the program. Students are encouraged to enroll in internships and practica.

The Master of Science Degree Program in Psychology with an emphasis in Behavior Analysis is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced training in behavior analysis.  Students pursuing this degree will be eligible for certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).  This degree will prepare students to apply behavioral laws to influence positive behavior change and improve the lives of clients.

The Department of Accounting & Computer Information Systems offers baccalaureate and masters degree programs. Baccalaureate programs are offered in Accounting and Computer Information Systems. Minors are offered in Accounting, Computing, Fraud Examination, and Internal Auditing. A graduate program is available leading to the Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Accounting.

Computer Information Systems
The major in Computer Information Systems involves the study and analysis of the design of an information gathering and processing system using computers. The typical graduate finds employment in business, industry, or Government, as a programmer, programmer/analysts, information technology support specialists or various other positions related to operating and managing a modern information technology installation. Some choose to continue their study as a graduate student. With experience or further study, a graduate may advance to positions such as systems analyst, software engineer, project manager, database administrator, or manager of information systems.
