As an AUM history major, you’ll cultivate a range of skills suitable for a variety of careers. You will also learn from one of the most academically accomplished history faculties in the Southeast; every full-time faculty member has published at least one book in his or her field, and all are active in the profession.

As one of the concentrations in the Sociology bachelors’ degree program, the Pre-Social Work program provides an academic foundation for a career in social work. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) defines social work as

“The professional activity of helping individuals, families, groups or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning or creating societal conditions favorable to that goal.” 

Social workers with a bachelor’s degree meet this goal by serving the community in a number of ways, including helping people cope with life challenges such as adopting a child or being diagnosed with a terminal illness. They also work with groups, community organizations, and policymakers to develop or improve programs, services, policies, and social conditions.

The employment world for chemical professionals can be divided into five main sectors: industry, academia, government, non-profit, and entrepreneurship, according to the American Chemical Society. There are many job titles associated with each of these sectors, such as analytical chemist, chemistry teacher, forensic scientist, geochemist, hazardous waste chemist, materials scientist and many more.

Maybe your passion is making that next big scientific discovery, or protecting the environment by analyzing and reporting on contaminated water. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree from AUM’s College of Sciences provides an excellent background for many different careers, prepares you for graduate school, or helps pave the way toward seeking admission to medical school or other professional health degree programs. With its low student-professor ratio, AUM offers you plenty of opportunities to strap on your goggles and join your professors in hands-on research. Choose from three concentrations: Chemistry, Professional Chemistry, and Health Sciences Chemistry.

Environmental scientists use their knowledge of earth’s systems to protect the environment and human health. They do this by cleaning up contaminated areas, making policy recommendations, or working with industry to reduce pollution and waste. Soil and plant scientists, and ecologists often work in remediation efforts, for a sanitation company, in manufacturing, at a university, or for a not-for-profit organization. Other environmental scientists are engaged in environmental policy, planning, and management for local governments, performing research-intensive work. Some professionals in this field have careers at the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Park Service, the United States Geological Survey and other agencies.

Environmental scientists are problem solvers. They research environmental and health problems to determine their causes and come up with solutions. They also use what they learn to make recommendations and develop strategies for managing environmental problems. From wading through swamps studying the impact of encroaching human populations on endangered species, to monitoring pollution levels in lakes and rivers, graduates of AUM’s Environmental Science program get the training needed for a fascinating and rewarding career.

The Department of Communication Disorders provides intimate, dynamic instruction and hands-on training for undergraduate students in both the theoretical and applied aspects of human communication sciences and disorders, preparing graduates for post-secondary study and multi-disciplinary career opportunities. The Department of Communication Disorders emphasizes student development of resolute ethical standards and evidenced-based practices in the delivery of speech-language and audiological services.

The AUM Communication Disorders program was established in 1976 and consists of two academic faculty members and four clinical faculty members, all of which hold certification by the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association and licensure via the Alabama Board of Examiners in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. The academic faculty teach the theoretical perspectives for both development and disorders, while the clinical faculty directs the student’s implementation of this knowledge for the remediation of speech, language and hearing disorders within the river region.

A degree in Economics from AUM provides students with analytical tools and practical skills to succeed in business, finance and government. This is achieved by offering a mix of theoretical and applied courses in economics, the function of markets around the world and optimal criteria for decision-making.

The Public Health and Microbiology concentration includes studies in:

• Microbial pathogenesis
• Principles of public health
• Epidemiology
• Molecular genetics
• Virology
• Environmental and industrial microbial processes.

This concentration prepares students for technical work or graduate school in microbial disease systems using polymerase chain reaction, other molecular diagnostic tools, as well as environmental and industrial applications of microbial systems.

Health Sciences offers a rewarding career in healthcare and related fields. If you plan to go on to medical school or another health professional school, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree and a set of prerequisite courses, so it makes sense to choose a concentration within your major in which you are interested, and one that contains as many of the prerequisite courses as possible. Most of the prerequisite courses come from chemistry, physics, and mathematics, the courses needed for the chemistry major. So, you will be earning your degree at the same time you are meeting the requirements for professional school.
