A major in Economics equips a student with an improved ability to recognize and understand the important economic problems and issues.  It provides the technical tools needed for critically analyzing these problems and issues.  It also offers insights into how to design, evaluate, and choose among alternative solutions to these problems.  It is an excellent preparation for those who want to become professional economists as well as for those who plan to go on to graduate schools and professions in the areas of business, law, healthcare management, and engineering.

Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers. These engineers discover new directions in computer hardware, which generate rapid advances in computer technology. Computer network architects design and build data communication networks, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and intranets. These networks range from small connections between two offices to next-generation networking capabilities such as a cloud infrastructure that serves multiple customers. Computer systems analysts study an organization’s current computer systems and procedures and design information systems solutions to help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively. They bring business and information technology (IT) together by understanding the needs and limitations of both. Computer and information research scientists invent and design new approaches to computing technology and find innovative uses for existing technology. They study and solve complex problems in computing for business, medicine, science, and other fields.

Psychology is a field of study that covers a broad spectrum of topics that have real-world applications. As one of the university’s most popular majors for undergraduate students, Psychology serves as an excellent foundation for careers in healthcare, business, sales and marketing, social service, and education. Of course, the study of Psychology at the graduate level also serves as a gateway to, and preparation for, careers in research or applied Psychology.

The Nonprofit Administration major is designed for students aspiring to enter the fields of nonprofit management and human services and for those currently employed in these areas. It provides management skills and training directed toward mobilizing community assets and capacity building.

The Nonprofit Administration Major is designed to:

• Develop leadership skills necessary to create positive social change.
• Prepare students to engage and manage volunteers and professionals.
• Teach strategies for the analysis of complex issues affecting nonprofit organizations.

This program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree provides a strong foundation in the fundamentals of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, and meets the requirements for professional certification by the American Chemical Society.

This program provides the broad fundamental knowledge most suited to students planning to become professional chemists or planning to pursue graduate training.

The interdisciplinary major is administered by the Department of History and is primarily intended for students seeking secondary licensure. It provides comprehensive training in History and related social-studies fields taught in Ohio secondary schools. The primary mission of the Social Studies major is to provide students with the content competency to teach Social Studies in secondary schools. A Social Studies teacher is expected to teach students how to make informed and reasoned decisions as citizens in a culturally diverse, democratic society. The degree forms the content knowledge basis for students to pursue teaching professions and to
provide the necessary critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and academic judgment skills upon which to embark on a lifetime of intellectual growth. Students pursuing a degree in Social Studies must also fulfill a minor in secondary education, which is administered by the College of Education and Human Services.

The School of Communication offers a Journalism and Promotional Communication (JPC) major with the two different sequences that provides specialization in journalism and promotional communication.

Journalism Sequence Students in the journalism sequence learn knowledge and skills essential to succeed in a digital newsroom, including hands-on training in digital tools used in reporting, writing, data analysis, multimedia content production, and audience engagement via social media. The theory courses focus on learning and understanding the relationship among news media, society, politics and economy. Promotional Communication Sequence: Promotional Communication students develop expertise in a wide range of strategic communication techniques. Our majors are well-versed in diverse communication specialties including advertising, public relations, visual communication, digital metrics, social media and content marketing. They learn social scientific theories that inform persuasion strategies and campaigns.

The Women’s & Gender Studies (WGS) program address a wide-ranging selection of issues, not only women’s issues, but issues related more broadly to gender and sexuality. WGS courses examine how categories of identity (e.g., sexuality, race, class, gender, age, ability, etc.) and structures of inequality are connected and should be examined and understood in relationship to one another. You will explore the diversity of women’s lives, their distinctive roles and contributions in society, and the social constructions of gender. You become aware of the diversity of our social experiences of gender as well as the systems of inequality in which we live.

Employers are looking for critical thinking, writing, presentation and problem-solving skills. A major or minor in Women’s and Gender studies gives you transferable skills for future job(s). Women’s and Gender Studies students may find employment in a variety of areas depending on their skills and experience. Some students find work
in the area of advocacy or social services-related positions, community development, business, and government. Others find work in education, health care, and/or law.

Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, and power generation equipment. Electronics engineers also design and develop electronic equipment, such as broadcast and communications systems—from portable music players to global positioning systems (GPSs).

Cleveland State University's Master of Science in Environmental Engineering degree is offered through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Washkewicz College of Engineering. This program represents the engineering component of the cross-disciplinary, environmental academic studies program at our university.

Although this program is designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree in engineering, non-engineering graduates also can take advantage of this course of study.
