The Department of English offers a Major in English and Minor in English, Minor in Professional Writing, and a Major in Teacher Education and Minor in Teacher Education.

The field of English focuses on the study and practice of various forms of writing in English. It includes:

• The study of written works in English—whether by writers from the United States, Britain, former colonies, the Commonwealth nations, or elsewhere—whose aesthetic achievement and cultural significance qualifies them as literature;
• The study of literary criticism and theory, of the relationship between literature and popular culture, and of allied narrative forms such as film, performance, electronic communications, and other new media;
• The study of the English language, its historical development, and its rhetorical dimensions;
• The theory and practice of writing, whether of poetry, fiction, nonfiction prose, or other expository forms;
• The theory and practice of teaching English language and literature, particularly at the secondary level.

Students who major in English develop broad reading and writing skills that make possible both an analytical engagement with, and a critical understanding of, diverse fields of cultural and aesthetic production. The English major offers excellent preparation for careers in writing, editing, publishing, teaching, government, law, and advertising.

The UIC Business Liautaud Graduate School Master of Science in Marketing Program provides essential concepts and tools for a career in marketing. The program is ideal for students and young professionals with non-business degrees looking to transition to a marketing position or for business graduates seeking more specialized training in marketing.

Our marketing program offers unique concentrations in Global and Multicultural Marketing and in Marketing Research, in addition to a concentration in Advertising and Communications. Or you can opt for a general MS in Marketing, a flexible option that you can customize to your professional interests.

In this program, you will learn how to:

• Develop integrated marketing strategies and solutions that address market challenges and exploit internal organizational and external market opportunities
• Design, conduct, analyze, and utilize market research to aid managerial decision making
• Create effective marketing tactics by configuring, monitoring and managing elements of the marketing mix
• Plan advertising and promotional campaigns, such as radio, television, print, outdoor, online, SEM
• Monitor and forecast marketing and sales trends
• Measure the ROI of marketing programs and by collecting and analyzing data

Bioinformatics develops methods and computing tools for understanding biological data. As an integrative field of science, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data.

Biological Sciences majors study living systems. Students and faculty pursue diverse programs of study, including, but not limited to, biochemistry, animal behavior, cell biology, development, ecology, environmental sciences, evolution, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, paleontology, plant biology, physiology (cellular, organismal, and environmental), population biology, and urban ecology. Students completing a baccalaureate degree in Biological Sciences are prepared for a wide range of careers, including jobs in a variety of health professions, the veterinary or pharmaceutical sciences, public or private research, education, regulatory policy, conservation and wildlife biology, environmental professions, and agriculture.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers a program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Major in Biological Sciences.

The Program in Rehabilitation Sciences will introduce you to the wide range of knowledge required to provide the best health-related and rehabilitation services. Our curriculum begins with people’s experiences of illness, injury or disability, focusing on these core aspects of rehabilitation:

• Research and evidence-based practices in rehabilitation
• Person-centered care
• Professional collaboration and teamwork
• Critical case management and access to health and human services.

All departments in the College of Applied Health Sciences contribute to the required core courses, providing you with a breadth of knowledge. You’ll study body systems (anatomy, psychology, nutrition), physical and mental health, interventions, health care systems and health informatics, and disability. Students take required and selective courses in disability and human development, kinesiology, nutrition, health information management, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Chemistry is a central science that provides much of the fundamental understanding needed to deal with society’s needs. Students with a degree in chemistry find they are prepared for jobs in the chemical, health, and pharmaceutical industries and in many other settings, including teaching, environmental settings, energy research, biomedical labs, forensics, and occupational and public health.

The Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Chemistry requires fewer chemistry courses and permits a larger number of electives outside of chemistry. It provides a program with many of the courses required for admission to medical schools and dental schools. The degree also provides a useful background for those who wish to pursue careers in business (management, marketing, sales).

The human-centered computing concentration prepares students to pursue areas such as user-interface design and development and computer graphics and animation. Applications of these skills might include video games, movie special effects, and visualization in science, engineering, and medicine. In addition to the fundamental areas of computer science—programming, data structures, discrete mathematics, algorithms, formal languages, computer architecture, and operating systems—the concentration educates students in user-interface design, computer graphics, visual media, and natural language processing.

The breadth of the energy industry—from creating energy efficient buildings to storage to power production—is covered in the master’s program. Areas of focus include HVAC design, energy efficiency and management of engineering projects.

Our Bachelor of Science in kinesiology focuses on the study of human movement from the cellular level to the whole body. Through courses in anatomy and physiology, assessment and programming, biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise psychology and motor control, you’ll explore all aspects of physical activity.

Civil engineering is a broad-based discipline that encompasses many specialties in the areas of structural engineering and mechanics, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and transportation engineering. Through the careful selection of courses, you can tailor the UIC MS in Civil Engineering program to meet your interests and needs.

Students pursuing the MS in Civil Engineering may choose between two options to complete their degree:

1. A thesis option, which provides the opportunity to gain research experience and is ideal for students who may be considering PhD study in the future. Thesis students often make connections in the field that can lead to career advice, research sponsorship, or other forms of funding.
2. A coursework-only option, intended for students who seek additional knowledge or who hope to obtain a professional license in the civil engineering field. This option is available for part-time as well as full-time students.
