Sociology is the systematic study of human social life. The B.A. in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory. The curriculum in sociology equips students to more effectively negotiate the diverse society in which we live by addressing social inequalities, culture, community development, social institutions, and social change.

The General Engineering program at University of Mississippi is heavily rooted in mathematics, science, and core engineering coursework, but offers a breadth and flexibility not offered by other programs in order to enable students to tailor a program of study to suit their interests and career goals.

Learn how to apply science and math to design, construct, operate and maintain solutions to technical problems

A general engineering background provides you with an understanding of the core math, scientific and technical principles needed for engineering. You’ll learn about problem-solving, as well as gain teamwork, leadership and communications skills.

You’ll explore the various engineering directions offered at Ole Miss in your first year in the general engineering program.

With a bachelor degree in engineering, you’ll be equipped for many engineering – and non-engineering – career paths. This could be as a project engineer, medical doctor, lawyer, military, business person and many other opportunities.

In general engineering, you will get:

• Degree choice – with the more specialized Bachelor of Science degree, you’ll take additional engineering science and engineering elective courses. With a Bachelor of Engineering, you get the core engineering science principles plus the flexibility to broaden your course selection outside of engineering.
• Tailored program – you can choose an emphasis in business, manufacturing, pre-law, pre-med, ROTC studies and secondary education – or one designed around your career interests.
• Opportunity to change to another engineering department – you can switch to a more specialized degree if you meet the academic requirements.

Marketing students learn how to research target audiences, advise on how to develop products for consumer desires, and determine product pricing structure. Students learn to select effective channels to communicate with customers and develop and implement promotional strategies.

Marketing is a creative, fast-paced industry. Our faculty will help you get inside the mind of prospective customers so you’ll know how to promote, develop, and sell products to them. Remember, without a plan, there is no sale!

Emphasis - Global Supply Chain Management
The aim of the emphasis in global supply chain management is to expose students to two primary sets of processes through which the firm creates value for its customers by moving goods and information through marketing channels: demand-focused processes consisting of marketing, sales, and customer relationship management activities, and supply-focused processes consisting of inbound logistics, operations, and outbound logistics.

Political science is the study of political institutions and political behavior at the local, state, national, and international levels. Students of political science will develop critical thinking, writing, and oral communication skills essential to effective citizenship, as well as many careers.

Political science majors at the University of Mississippi conduct policy analysis and study political actors and organizations within the context of American government and politics, comparative government and politics, and international relations. The department offers optional emphases in Campaigns & Elections, International Conflict & Cooperation, Politics of Developing Countries, or Law & Courts.

The B.S. in biological science prepares a student for a variety of careers or for graduate work in many fields, including organismal biology, medicine, education, cell or molecular biology, ecology and conservation biology. This is the degree of choice for those aspiring to be professional scientists.

The M.A. in Southern studies is an intense, interdisciplinary course of study touching on all facets of Southern life, history, and culture. The program is the only one of its kind in the country, and students can study an array of Southern topics and issues, from Faulkner to the blues, from the Civil War to the civil rights movement, from folk art to fundamentalism.

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice at the University of Mississippi empowers students to explore their criminal justice interests from emphasis areas in corrections, homeland security or law enforcement

Philosophy is the study of the fundamental ideas underlying every dimension of human life. A major in philosophy helps one to think clearly, communicate persuasively, engage in moral reasoning, and formulate a coherent approach to life. Typically, philosophy majors go on to graduate school, law school, medical school, theological studies, or careers in business.

Philosophy majors consider the questions at the core of human experience - the nature of reality, the extent of human knowledge, the basis of moral and ethical thought and behavior, the resolution of conflict, and the origin of belief. Students may also choose an optional emphasis in religious studies.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (B.S.B.E.) degree program will prepare engineering students at the University of Mississippi to capably apply advanced mathematics, science, and engineering to solve the problems at the interface of engineering, biology, and medicine. Moreover, the curriculum will prepare graduates with the ability to make measurements on and interpret data from living systems, addressing the problems associated with the interaction between living and nonliving materials and systems.

The graduates of the program will be able to pursue (i) employment in biomedical or related industries (ii) graduate studies in biomedical engineering or related disciplines, and (iii) pursue professional careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or patent law.

You can choose one of three academic tracks in our biomedical engineering program:

• Biomolecular engineering – brings together the study of molecular biology, biophysics, and chemical engineering to modify or create new molecules. This can lead you to a job working on innovative drugs and medical processes, as well as new foods and fuels.
• Biomedical systems – provides you with an understanding of medical instrumentation, devices, and biomechanics. You’ll also learn about signal analysis, using technology and other tools to better understand a person’s health.
• Bioinformatics – applies big data analytics to genome sequencing, medical imaging, and large data management. This degree can start you down the path for a career in computational medical research, software development or database management.

The B.S. in chemical engineering provides the student with a fundamental knowledge of chemical engineering science and prepares graduates for a variety of careers in industry and government, or for advanced study in engineering, business, or professional school.

With a chemical engineering degree, you will be ready to pursue careers in manufacturing, petrochemicals, oil and gas, biotechnology, the environmental field and more. Your degree can also pave the way to top graduate programs in medicine, business, law and advanced engineering fields.

You can choose the standard track, the pre-med track or one of the following emphases:

• Biotechnology – this includes the study and use of biological processes to make advancements in fields as diverse as drugs, agriculture and food.
• Environmental – this will give you the foundation to work in environmental areas, such as waste and pollution reduction.
• Manufacturing – you’ll learn the skills to improve processes and productivity in advanced manufacturing environments.
• Materials – you’ll delve into the world of advanced materials – such as polymers and nanomaterials (no hyphen in nanomaterials) – that can handle extreme conditions.
