Overview

The Food Science program offers excellent opportunities for graduate level coursework and research leading to academic or industry careers in Food Science.  Graduate students receive advanced preparation related to food processing, product development, and food safety.  Food Science is a multi-disciplinary program that is administered by the Department of Dairy and Food Science, but may also include such diverse areas as animal science, food grain processing, and agricultural & biosystems engineering.

  • Exhibit knowledge concerning food science at a level appropriate to a M.S. degree holder.

Work Permit USA

Optional Practical Training or OPT is a period during which students, who have completed their degrees in the USA, are permitted to work for one year on a student visa by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). OPT allows students to work for up to 3 years and develop real-world skills to survive in the competitive jobs market.

It is temporary employment for a period of 12-months that is directly related to the major area of study of an F-1 student. Eligible students have the option to apply for OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies and/or after completing their academic studies.

A student can participate in three types of Optional Practical Training (OPT):

  1. Pre-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment provided to F-1 students before completion of their course of study.
  2. Post-Completion OPT: This is temporary employment available to F-1 students after completing their course of study.
  3. 24 Month STEM Extension: Students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) courses can a 24-month extension after their initial Post-Completion OPT authorization.

Dietetics prepares Registered Dietitian Nutritionists to practice dietetics at an advanced level and/or pursue doctoral study.  The program seeks to develop research skills, stimulate independent thought, and provide up-to-date knowledge in foods, nutrition, and food service/business management. This program prepares individuals to integrate and apply the principles ranging from the biomedical sciences, human behavior, and management to design, and to lead effective food, nutrition, health and wellness programs in a variety of settings. This online program will be a degree tailored for credentialed, practicing dietetics professionals who seek to enhance their knowledge in a specific area of dietetics practice or to retool for new career opportunities in dietetics practice. The Leadership and Management of Nonprofit Organizations major will prepare students for jobs in the nonprofit sector. Through the Leadership and Management of Nonprofit Organizations (LMNO) program, students will be empowered to become successful professionals who work to advance the quality of life in communities. The program prepares students with opportunities to increase their abilities and skills in the work of leadership to enhance nonprofit organizations. Students will develop a basic understanding of the nonprofit sector, the role of philanthropy in the United States, and introduce the history, philosophy, ethics, and organizational structure of nonprofit and social service agencies. Students will apply fundraising, volunteer management, financial management, leadership and team development techniques.

Upon completion of the undergraduate program, students may also earn the Certified Nonprofit Professional credential with the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance organization. This certification requires students to have knowledge and experiences in 10 different competencies areas. Those competency areas are: Communication, Marketing, and Public Relations; Culture and Diversity; Financial Resource Development and Management; Foundations and Management of Nonprofit Sector; Governance, Leadership, and Advocacy; Legal and Ethical Decision Making; Personal and Professional Development; Program Development; Volunteer and Human Resource Management; and Future of the Nonprofit Sector.

Graduates will be prepared to obtain positions with local, national, and international nonprofit organizations or employers outside of the nonprofit sector. Master of Science in Agricultural Education

The Master’s degree in Agricultural Education is designed to meet the needs of individuals who work (or plan to work) in agricultural education, non-profit organizations, post-secondary education or in agriculture leadership. The School of Education, Counseling and Human Development provides professional preparation for those who want to expand their knowledge and advance themselves professionally in the agricultural industry.

Students are able to choose from either a program in which only coursework is required or a program in which they must complete a research project or creative component. If a student elects to complete a thesis (Plan A) the program will include 30 credit hours. If a student elects to complete a creative component (Plan B), the student must complete a minimum of 32 credit hours in order to graduate. If a full coursework option is selected (Plan C), the student must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours.

The program prepares graduate students for positions in the design and development of computer systems and applications in business and industry and for scientific positions in industrial or academic computing research. Our CM curriculum is primarily focused on commercial building construction, the program also covers heavy-highway-utilities and residential construction. Bachelor of Science, Major in Food Science

Food Science is the study of the science behind and involved with the production, preservation, packaging, and distribution of safe, wholesome, and nutritious foods.  Students will develop a knowledge base related to the basic physical, microbiological, chemical and engineering sciences as they are applied to foods.  These sciences are utilized to study the nature of foods, the causes of food deterioration and spoilage, and principles of food preservation.  This skill set is also employed by the scientists to develop and create approaches for the generation of new food products to assist in feeding the world through provision of foods that provide proper nutrition with acceptable taste and texture while maintaining affordability of the product.  Graduates with a degree in Food Science are well prepared for professional positions within the food industry or for further graduate study in Food Science.

The M.S. in Interdisciplinary Sciences program is an innovative, flexible, and highly individualized graduate program designed to meet students’ academic and professional goals. Students will work with their advisor to finalize their plan of study in at least two or three disciplines, using classes that are relevant to supporting the student in achieving their educational goals. Students will complete a plan of study with a research/design paper or coursework only option.
