You’ll acquire knowledge that can help you think critically and communicate effectively about social structures and the forces that shape individual, group and collective experience. The program's scope ranges from the analysis of small-group behavior to the study of the development of large social systems — from the family to education, religion, government and the economy.

Join the Sociology Club. Participate in valuable internships, usually at social and county agencies, and take advantage of our extensive overseas study program. Opportunities for exceptional students include working with professors one-on-one in independent study courses, and participating in the SUNY Oswego Sociology Honors Society. An annual Sportsmanship Day Symposium provides an opportunity to present on sports sociology (and other related) topics.

You may choose a concentration in global politics and governance, global political economy, global culture or area studies. Core courses encompass international and global events, organizations, structures and processes — as well as the global economy, global media and increasing worldwide cultural interconnectedness. During the senior year, you will choose either a capstone seminar in your concentration or a relevant internship in an international area. In consultation with an adviser, you can develop a more directed program of study — such as a focus on development in the Third World or on globalism.

You’ll take at least 6 credit hours of a foreign language at the intermediate level, enhancing your ability to communicate internationally. To integrate research results from a wide range of disciplines into a more complete understanding of the mind, the programs draw on methods associated with psychology, computer science (artificial intelligence), linguistics, philosophy, anthropology and biology. You’ll start building a solid foundation in the field through two introductory courses that focus on the core values of cognitive science and the seminal ideas associated with contributing disciplines and the brain, mind and consciousness. Enroll in our BA degree program and select a set of three upper-division courses from a broad range of options — including Neural Networks, Cognitive Musicology, Computational Linguistics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Evolutionary Psychology and Artificial Intelligence. Or choose our more tightly focused BS degree program and pursue additional coursework in psychology and computer science. This exciting interdisciplinary program will teach you to gather, write, edit, package and produce the news for print and digital platforms. You'll also explore the forces that shape television and radio news — and the demands of writing news in broadcast style.

All students are required to participate in an internship before they graduate and study in another field to broaden their breadth of knowledge. We offer a network of internships and co-ops with numerous large- and small-market media outlets. Gain experience at student-run campus media (The Oswegonian, WNYO-FM and WTOP-TV) or on-campus National Public Radio affiliate WRVO. Our Hollywood POV program takes you to the West Coast media capital to learn about, and connect with alumni working in major entertainment and news operations.

The graphic design and digital media program consists of courses in studio, thesis, history, theory and practice. Candidates choose to focus in a specific medium such as the web, interactive or print, or to focus on a specific production type such as promotional, informational or illustrative. The curriculum is structured into two tracks, offering students with an undergraduate degree in a related area of study the opportunity to develop a specialization, and offering students from outside of the discipline the opportunity for general study within design to complement an undergraduate degree.
