Philosophy
Undergraduate studies in Philosophy fit well into many pre-professional programs, including law school. Emphasizing careful, deep, and critical analysis of concepts and problems, Philosophy is an excellent major for students seeking business and government careers that require a liberal arts background.

Philosophy courses at Western explore traditional areas of focus, such as ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, and the history of philosophy. Through a collaborative study of these topics, the department faculty helps students develop valuable skills, such as critical thinking, critical reading, analytic writing, and effective speaking. Studies consistently show that Philosophy majors do better than anyone else when it comes to verbal reasoning and analytic skills (as revealed by scores on the Graduate Record Exam).

A specialization in Sociology-Elementary major provides an excellent base of knowledge for individuals interested in becoming elementary level educators. This program satisfies the academic major requirement for teacher certification with an endorsement in elementary education and must be accompanied by the professional preparation program in elementary education.

Sociology is an area of study that is unfamiliar to many incoming students because it is seldom taught in high school. It is a vibrant discipline that allows students to develop both personally and professionally. As a sociology major you will have the opportunity to learn how humans behave and interact in groups—whether small groups like families or large groups like religious organizations. You will also learn how one’s position in the larger society (youth or elderly, man or woman, poor or rich) shapes life chances and experiences from the cradle to the grave.

Mathematics is the study of pattern, structure, and change. The integration of concepts from both Economics and Mathematics creates proficiencies in both fields and provides a foundation for graduates to be successful in advanced study in economics or business.

The Urban Sustainability major examines the human and environmental dimensions of cities in the United States and around the world. The curriculum incorporates approaches from a range of disciplines including urban planning, environmental policy, economics, political science, and history. The program emphasizes analytic and communication skills, which are valued by a range of employers. The program provides an excellent foundation for students pursuing graduate studies in a range of social science disciplines.

Examine the human and environmental dimensions of cities in the United States and around the world. Classes incorporate approaches from urban planning, environmental policy, economics, political science, and history. In this major, Politics, Philosophy, and Economics are combined in a multidisciplinary effort to study modern political science, questions of political philosophy, pursue social scientific research, and apply economic analysis in problem solving. The multidisciplinary trio provides a foundation in philosophy, logic, critical thinking, and political processes within the U.S. and in the international system, and the functioning of the economy with attention to economic analysis tools.  Students are given preparation in the foundational materials of each of these fields, and encouraged to explore classes at the intersection of political and economic issues.  Because it draws on three different research disciplines, this combined major strives to provide students with an interdisciplinary set of skills related to critical reasoning and analysis, problem solving and decision making, and social scientific research.  The PPE combined major is not a triple major; rather, it strives to provide a broad exposure to these three fields.

Business Administration - Management
Western's Business Administration programs explore leadership roles in business and the community, providing students with the perceptual and analytical skills necessary to make decisions and evaluate policies in business, and develop an understanding of the social, economic, and regulatory environments in business. All students earning a degree in Business Administration develop significant understanding of management information systems and computing.

The Management Concentration prepares students to work with people in a variety of contexts. While other business disciplines focus on tasks for business, Management focuses on how to motivate others to accomplish these tasks efficiently and effectively with high quality results. Coursework in Management enables students to develop the analytical skills necessary for effective decision-making and business policy development. Students learn how to manage projects, work with teams, implement changes, and be effective leaders.

Statistics provides the reasoning and methods for producing and understanding data. One advantage of working in statistics is that you can combine your interest with almost any other field in science, technology, or business. Many graduates will choose to pursue graduate programs in statistics, biostatistics, computational biology, finance, or the social sciences.

Western's B.S. degree in Statistics is organized around a core course of study in probability and statistics that provides students with a background in the fundamentals of statistical thought and the application of the most common types of statistical analyses. In addition, our elective classes offer our students the opportunity to have at their disposal a diverse toolkit of analysis techniques and modeling choices that can be used to make sense of information coming from a breadth of different data types.

Psychology
Most of the major issues facing the people of the world today—hunger, overpopulation, the continuing threat of war, prejudice, pollution, drug addiction—are people problems; people have created them, and it will be people who must and will find solutions to them. Psychology, as the scientific study of mind and behavior, will help provide the answers to many of these pressing problems.

Psychology’s attempt to understand the human condition takes many approaches: some psychologists study brain chemistry and its relation to behavior, some study the behavior of individuals in groups, and others participate in providing counseling or psychotherapy to people who are mentally ill or who have difficulty coping with the demands of life.

Interdisciplinary Concentration
Interdisciplinary Concentration provides an opportunity for developing an individually designed major for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Arts in Education degrees. It allows maximal flexibility in formulating a program to meet personal and career goals, bringing together each student’s vital interests from more than one discipline into a cohesive whole.

The self-designed concentration process allows students to work with a faculty committee to articulate a sound rationale for their area of study and to develop a plan including courses, independent study projects, senior projects and, where applicable, internships and apprenticeships. Students are assisted in completing the concentration by faculty and other advisors and by the FAIR 303a, Concentration Seminar course. The Concentration Proposal rationale statement and accompanying Concentration course list form the plan of study for the Interdisciplinary Concentration major, after approval by the student’s Concentration Committee and filed in the Fairhaven College Records Office. As part of this plan of study, a minimum of three-quarters of coursework, completing a minimum of 36 credits is required AFTER the concentration filing quarter.
