They work in interdisciplinary firms with other professionals to design outside spaces where people live, work and play. So many of your favorite parks, plazas, golf courses and certainly college campuses resulted directly from the hands-on technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility of landscape architects. If you have been to Central Park in New York City or the Baltimore Inner Harbor, you have visited places designed, planned and managed by landscape architects.

Think linguists just speak lots of languages? Think again. Linguists are scientists who study language. Language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans engage in, yet it is used effortlessly and subconsciously and is acquired by infants with no formal instruction. How can you effortlessly speak and understand without even being aware of what you are doing? As a student of linguistics, you will explore the answers to this question and many others.

Studying the growth of emerging markets, consumer behavior, production schedules or portfolio optimization are important jobs in a free market economy. The ability to model loan defaults, price insurance products for life, health or property, or model uncertainty and risk in other economic activities, is a highly prized skill. The Mathematics and Economics program trains students to model uncertainty, with a focus on the financial services sector and the economy. The degree is also excellent preparation for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in Economics, as a strong background in mathematics is a must for admission into the top graduate programs.

Students in the Human Relations Administration (HRA) major complete course work and field placements that will prepare them for a career in human resources at both profit and not-for-profit agencies. They will develop the skills necessary to manage employee relationships, facilitate critical workplace training, enhance staff motivation and ensure compliance of important legal issues including diversity and inclusion.

Human Resources is a growing field, and our students will possess highly marketable skills upon entering the workforce. In addition to completing a B.S. in HRA, students will earn a minor in Organizational and Community Leadership—allowing them to master several academic disciplines including business, communications, human development, mentorship/counseling and interpersonal relationships.

With 450-hours of internship experience, students will also receive on-the-job training in a human resources organization and complete a seminar focused on professional development and professional issues in the field.

Comparative literature brings an international and intercultural perspective to bear on the study of literary themes, forms, movements and relations, as well as the interrelations between different national literatures and other disciplines. The Comparative Literature Program provides students the opportunity to design a course of study allowing specialization in two or more literatures.

By studying geological sciences, you will study the planet, the processes that change our landscapes, the history of life and the interactions between environment and society. You will gain the practical and in-demand skills to collect scientific data, inform policy decisions and study the environmental impacts of things like fracking, oil and natural gas extraction, renewable resources, climate change, and more.  Geological sciences graduates are in high demand with starting salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 annually.

Sociology is the study of social organizations, social change and the social causes and consequences of human behavior in the modern world. The Sociology Education degree offers a liberal arts curriculum that integrates teaching theory and methods with courses focusing on contemporary social issues and problems. Students working toward teaching certification in the social sciences will be able to augment their training in pedagogy with sociological content emphasizing inequality, social justice, law and society, deviance and criminology, social correlates of health and wellbeing and disasters and the environment.

Students pursuing the B.S. in Mathematics acquire depth in several key areas of mathematics, suitable as preparation for graduate study as well as immediate technically-oriented careers in business and government. Students interested in acquiring breadth in the liberal arts and less depth in mathematics can pursue the B.A. in Mathematics. Training in mathematics develops analytical and problem-solving skills that can be widely applied, and students with a degree in Mathematics frequently find rewarding careers that do not use the word “mathematician” in the job title.

The ability to use a foreign language and to employ knowledge about another culture is highly valued by the business and professional communities. Multilingualism and intercultural competence are essential credentials for leadership today in diverse fields. Our graduates choose a variety of career paths: Some become teachers, translators, or interpreters; others are employed in publishing, broadcasting, government, international travel, financial services, or other areas of international business. Opportunities in international marketing, advertising, and other communications industries provide further outlets for language skills, coupled with other expertise acquired in joint or double majors. Some students enter careers with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, while others go on to advanced degrees in preparation for work in international law, diplomacy, and college teaching.
