The Radiological Sciences Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (Radiological Health Physics option), a Master of Science degree in Radiological Sciences and Protection, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physics (Radiological Sciences option) which are intended to address the various educational and career interests of our graduate applicants.

Our program is recognized nationally for producing graduates who make exceptional contributions to the radiological sciences community. Our graduates have established rewarding careers in the field of radiation protection, and can be found at national laboratories, nuclear power plants, universities, hospitals, government agencies, radioisotope production facilities, manufacturers of radiation detection equipment, radioactive waste disposal facilities, the military and other uniformed services, and other prestigious institutions and corporations across the country.

The pandemic exposed the critical role that public health professionals play to prevent diseases and promote health. With a B.S. in public health, you’ll be prepared for a career that creates healthy communities through education, research and promotion of healthy environments and lifestyles.
The cornerstone of the program is health promotion and disease prevention, rather than on diagnosing and treating illnesses and conditions after they occur.
Public health jobs exist in private industry, organizations, local communities, and state and national settings. We offer the Public Health BS in two options: Community Health/Health Promotion and Health Sciences. See more details below. Students will also attain a foundation of knowledge that is necessary to pursue graduate studies in public health and health sciences.

Health Sciences - Concentration
This option will provide a strong emphasis on health sciences with flexibility in selecting health science courses and electives under academic advisor guidance. Sufficient elective credits are included in health science coursework to allow students the opportunity to select science courses in an area of their interest within a public health framework. This option not only prepares students to work in the field of public health, but could also be used as a pathway to graduate degrees in various areas of health sciences such as direct entry graduate nursing programs, occupational therapy, and post-graduate professional health programs, including medical school.

The UMass Lowell biology master's program fosters critical thinking and develops skills needed for independent laboratory study. This is accomplished, in part, by offering advanced lecture, seminar and laboratory courses.

The Department of Biological Sciences offers four options for the Master of Science in Biological Science:

• General Option offers flexibility so students can create a program that fits their educational and employment goals.
• Biotechnology Option focuses on training essential to employment in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
• Bioinformatics Option prepares students for academic and industry positions by providing interdisciplinary coursework emphasizing computational analysis and interpretation of biological datasets.
• Education, Communication and Outreach Option offers tailored coursework to prepare graduates to effectively communicate biological and scientific concepts using evidence-based approaches in their desired career paths.

The Analytics & Operations Management Concentration provides students with an understanding of the complex web of activities, people and organizations needed to deliver products and services to customers, from small retailers to large Fortune 500 corporations. Concentration coursework will help you:

• Learn about Six Sigma and other quality tools that have helped the world’s leading companies save millions of dollars and improve customer satisfaction.

Sound recording technology is one of UMass Lowell's signature programs and is one of the few programs of its kind in the United States. It provides motivated students with the practical and theoretical background needed for success in the industry. Starting a career in audio recording has traditionally involved training through an informal apprenticeship system. With the rush of new technologies that have revolutionized the recording industry in recent years, and the opportunities that new media are opening up for recording professionals, a higher level of training and education in music, media and technology is now required for any meaningful employment, even at the entry level.

The program's goal is to produce musically sophisticated and sensitive professionals who have sufficient technical knowledge to excel in today's rapidly changing, technology-based production industry. Successful students' understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of the discipline, coupled with comprehensive music training, prepares them for a wide variety of professions. The program combines courses in physics, electrical engineering, computer science and advanced mathematics, with traditional studies in music and at least nine courses in the art and technology of recording.The faculty of the SRT program are well-trained educators and active industry professionals, drawn from the wealth of high-technology, broadcasting, recording, and production talent in the greater Boston area, as well as the region's cultural and artistic communities.

The program is supported by eight (8) studio laboratory spaces. Its exceptional recording, editing, critical listening, video, testing, synthesis, and multimedia facilities allow students to become proficient at operating and creatively using a wide variety of equipment and technologies.

The International Business Concentration provides you with the broad range of skills you will need for an international career in a rapidly evolving global workplace. Concentration coursework will assist you to:

• Develop an awareness of management concepts, systems and practices in different countries and institutional settings.
• Understand cultural dynamics, economics and political constraints as they affect the marketing and sales aspect of international business.
• Assess and evaluate the financial risks associated with multi-national firms, and address global sourcing strategies. This includes; managing supply and demand uncertainties, distribution strategies for global operations, and managing strategic alliances.
• Learn more about the role that information technology and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) plays in managing global supply chains.
• Enhance your understanding of the details and nuances of international trade.

International Business is your choice if you:

• Aspire to study abroad or participate in a significant international experience outside of the classroom such as an international internship.

Geoscience is the study of the physical environment. The curriculum at UMass Lowell is centered around a strong geoscience core, but includes additional course work in the biological sciences, hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and geographical information systems. This concentration provides a broader preparation than the traditional geology course of study and also is recommended for students who might wish to obtain certification as earth science teachers. It provides the requisite course work for students who wish to pursue a graduate degree in environmental science or geology.
Graduates of this concentration are qualified for a variety of employment opportunities in traditional areas of geological employment in the petroleum and mining industries, as well for expanding opportunities in hydrogeology, hazardous waste assessment and management, groundwater remediation, wetlands delineation and evaluation, and environmental management.
Previous graduates have found employment in the petroleum industry, in asbestos identification and remediation, in environmental testing laboratories as analytical specialists, and in the field evaluating hazardous waste sites and ground and surface water contamination.

The introductory courses for majors provide the freshmen experience and create common bonds among students in Political Science. Core offerings on American Politics and Policy have been augmented by others on comparative policies of countries ranging from Eastern Europe to Southeast Asia to Southern Africa. The Department also offers specialized courses related to gender and citizenship, political economy, race and ethnicity, and public policy of interest to students in a variety of majors across the University.

In addition to traditional courses in political thought, recent course offerings have included work in state theory, feminist political theory, current theoretical conflicts in constitutional interpretation, and the politics of arts and culture.

Mathematics has long played an integral role in advances in science and technology. And in today’s high-tech, information-based economy, a background in mathematics is a highly valued commodity.

At UMass Lowell, students pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics develop valuable and transferable skills in critical thinking, quantitative analysis and problem solving — skills that are necessary for success in a broad range of fields.

Offered by UMass Lowell’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, this flexible program features a robust curriculum designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the science of mathematics. Topics covered include calculus, physics, discrete structures, applied statistics, propositional logic, methods of proof, relations and functions, applications to computer science and more.
