The Master of Science degree in pure mathematics is an opportunity to advance and solidify an understanding of the mathematical sciences. Study at the master’s level allows the student to focus exclusively on mathematics. Such study can be a point of entry for a career in industry or can lead to doctoral study. Many alumni of the program are currently employed as teachers at local community colleges, while some go on to careers in industry. 

The Italian studies program offers courses in Italian language, culture, literature, history and cinema, as well as courses on Italian American culture. Italian courses can also be used to fulfill Discovery Program requirements and the Bachelor of Arts foreign language proficiency requirement. The program provides opportunities both to achieve high competence in Italian language and culture and to apply these knowledge skills to other disciplines. The Italian studies program encourages independent and innovative thinking and research so that students may pursue and achieve individualized goals while they prepare for the challenges of thriving in the world community.

The Department of History at the University of New Hampshire offers an option in Museum Studies for students pursuing the Master of Arts degree in history. The Museum Studies program combines practical museum experience with solid academic training to prepare students for a variety of positions in museums and other forums for public history. Located near the seacoast of New Hampshire and southern Maine, within easy driving distance of Boston as well as much of central and northern New England, the University of New Hampshire is ideally situated to take advantage of its close proximity to numerous historical sites and museums.

Students enrolling in the B.A. music liberal studies program — a program that stresses the development of skills in analysis, writing and critical thinking about a wide variety of musics and the larger connection with history, culture and society — are required to submit a writing sample and interview with one of the music liberal studies program faculty members. The writing sample should be non-fiction, preferably an assignment for a course in English, history or a similar subject, 500 words or more in length.

The Discovery Program capstone requirement is fulfilled by a final project or a public performance given during the senior year. For students in the music liberal studies option, there is a choice of completing a half recital or comparable final project.

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Zoology builds from the common background of the biology core curriculum to provide ample time for third- and fourth-year students to concentrate in specialized disciplines such as marine and freshwater biology, behavior, cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolution, fisheries, physiology, and neurobiology while giving students the foundation from which they can specialize in the area of zoology. Undergraduate students are encouraged to conduct field or lab-based research which helps determine advanced education disciplines for graduate studies.  Many students ultimately work in the government, environmental agencies, education as well as agricultural, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries, where they conduct advanced research and/or teaching.  Zoology majors had the second highest income and lowest unemployment rate according to data from the 2016  U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

The program in art education is organized into a five-year, teacher-education sequence. This curriculum is designed to prepare teachers of art in the public schools. The satisfactory completion of the B.A. studio art curriculum for art education students and required education courses, in conjunction with the fifth-year internship, will satisfy the initial certification requirements for teachers of art in the public schools of New Hampshire and in most other states. These requirements may change by the time students apply for certification and the students are required to fulfill the then-current requirements. Art education students may take accredited crafts courses at other institutions as art electives.

Most entering students have a BA/BS in economics or environmental/agricultural economics. Incoming students should have, at a minimum, coursework in intermediate microeconomic theory, econometrics, and calculus. Areas of interest include agricultural economics, community and regional economics, land economics, water economics, and environmental economics.

This option is designed for:

• Students interested in a teaching therapeutic riding or other equine-assisted activities and therapies.
• Students interested in an administrative career at a center conducting equine-assisted activities and therapies, such as fundraising, volunteer coordination, or management for a therapeutic riding center.

This option includes classes in equine studies, equine-assisted activities and therapies, non-profit organizations, and topics related to human development and special needs. Students also prepare and test for PATH International instructor certification, which allows them to teach therapeutic riding at any PATH International operating center.

In addition to the standard core courses for all Equine Studies majors, students in Equine Management take courses in human anatomy and physiology, agricultural business management and non-profit management, equine-assisted activities, therapeutic riding instruction, equine management, and equine conformation.  Students then select 20 approved credits to allow them to focus in the areas most relevant to their desired career.  Those courses may include classes in equine training, riding instruction, sign language, human development, and education.

Biotechnology focuses on the application of the biological and biochemical sciences, and particularly genetics, to the preparation of new and enhanced biomedical, industrial, agricultural, and environmental products. Graduate instruction in this area would include molecular biology, cell and tissue culturing, protein biologic development, bioinformatics, functional and comparative genomics, applied immunology, DNA sequencing, tissue biology and engineering, industrial microbiology, drug development, intellectual property, clinical trials, biotechnology management and marketing, applicable regulations, and biotechnology ethics.

The M.S. in Biotechnology: Industrial and Biomedical Sciences (MS Biotech:IBMS) program at the University of New Hampshire is a STEM-designated graduate degree program that offers its students innovative experiential learning opportunities and delivers a content-rich, skills-based, and highly versatile curriculum for individuals seeking to advance their careers in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and biomanufacturing sectors. Students will complete a project, internship, or co-op experience as part of their degree program. The MS Biotech:IBMS program has a core foundation in the theory and wet-laboratory skills of cell and tissue biology and culturing; protein and immunologic methods and therapeutics; and the molecular biotechnology of nucleic acids. Students are also required to develop a substantial background understanding of biotech product lifecycle and the regulatory and legal implications therein. After demonstrating proficiency in the core biotechnology knowledge areas, MS Biotech:IBMS students will work with a faculty advisor to create a customized program of study that may include content from diverse graduate programs across the UNH campuses.

At UNH, the master’s in mechanical engineering will provide you with advanced training in any of a variety of specialized concentrations, including fluid dynamics and thermal science, mechanics, materials science, design and manufacturing, dynamic systems and control, and ocean engineering. You’ll have the opportunity to conduct original research, complete a thesis and publish papers in any of these areas. Moreover, students enrolled in this program are eligible for teacher assistant and research assistant funding.
