Classics is the study of the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. Both cultures have had a profound influence on life in the western world, especially in the areas of language and literature, art and architecture, politics and religion, science and philosophy. The Classics department at Wright State offers classes in most of these areas.

The Latin major allows students to focus primarily on the study of Latin language, literature, and culture. Students are required to take 7 semesters of Latin language. Additional electives cover courses in a diverse range of subjects relating to the study of the Classical world.

Students interested in teaching Latin major in Latin and enroll in the Latin Licensure program, which the Classics Department offers in conjunction with Wright State’s College of Education and Human Services.

Students in the Latin program will:

The Council on Social Work Education has accredited this program since 1974, assuring you that the curriculum and faculty meet established national standards. Qualified graduates of the bachelor's program are eligible for examinations to achieve advanced standing in master's degree programs. Those who qualify for dual-credit consideration could complete their master's degree in as little as one academic year.

Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the application of engineering principles and methods to solve problems in the medical and biological areas. Students in this program work with living systems, apply advanced technology to complex problems in medical care, and observe how their work directly impacts the delivery of human health care. Specialized areas of BME include bioinstrumentation; biomaterials; biomechanics; cellular, tissue, and genetic engineering; clinical engineering; medical imaging; orthopedic engineering; and systems physiology.

Industrial and systems engineers work in one of the broadest fields of engineering. Industrial engineers are sometimes called “productivity people” and “efficiency experts”—when it comes to quality control, you are the pro.

Industrial and systems engineering (ISE) focuses on doing more with less—doing things better, cheaper, faster, more safely, and with less waste. Instead of designing bridges, machines, or circuits, industrial engineers will engineer all parts of a process—people, machines, materials, information, and energy—to make a product or provide a service.

Program Outcomes

The following student outcomes of the industrial and systems engineering program will prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives:

• An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
• An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
• An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
• An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which most consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
• An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
• An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions

The Bachelor of Arts degree in music is designed for students who want to study music but do not necessarily plan a professional career in music. Students will get a much broader, more general education than students seeking a Bachelor of Music degree. Required courses are kept to a minimum. Consequently, students must work closely with an advisor in selecting course electives. For graduation, students must complete level III in the applied music concentration.

You can harness the power of music and its ability to express and communicate while studying music at Wright State. You will develop knowledge, technical skill, and the use of technology in our multifaceted curriculum. After graduation, pursue a career as a performer, composer, arranger, teacher, cultural administrator, or community leader. The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering offers a program of graduate study leading to a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (M.S.). The M.S. program is broad in scope and emphasizes portable concepts in the design and analysis of complex physical systems using modeling, synthesis, and optimization techniques, and bridges interdisciplinary engineering areas such as controls, robotics, electronics, and communications.

This graduate program is designed for working professionals like you to help advance your career. This program is one year with a flexible, convenient blended education approach. You will spend four weekends in on-campus residences and do the remaining coursework online.

The program focuses on a problem-solving approach to information management, using real-life experiences, case materials, and simulations taught by outstanding faculty and industry experts. If you are curious, passionate about innovation, and like solving problems, a Master of Information Systems will enhance your existing experience, help you achieve your goals, and advance your career.

Program Outcomes
In this program, your work is focused on problem-solving, student-focused experiences, and business or organization involvement. This master’s program is a one-year program requiring 33 credit hours. Six credit hours are dedicated to the extensive capstone project designed for the program by the sponsoring business or organization. The remaining credit hours are focused on advanced topics in information system design, development methodologies, database management systems, electronic business, and data communications. This program will prepare you to work in supply chain management jobs and careers or to continue your education with another graduate or doctoral degree. 

The Organizational Leadership major and minor are multidisciplinary, focused on the people side of organizations and managing others. An education in organizational leadership can provide you with a broad perspective to prepare for complex social, cultural, and professional issues that are sure to be encountered.

Geography is the study of the location and interrelationships of human and physical phenomena on the earth’s surface. Because of its emphasis on spatial organization and distribution of these phenomena, geography has a broad cross-disciplinary base. Such topics of study as cartography, climatology, land form analysis, photogrammetry and remote sensing, settlement theory, spatial interaction, and urban morphology indicate the breadth of contemporary geography. The undergraduate major in geography includes the study of cultural, economic, physical, and regional geography, as well as cartography, quantitative methods, and field work. Backgrounds in the natural and social sciences, humanities, statistical methods, and computer programming are useful to the geography major.

The Bachelor of Science program in geography emphasizes technical skills and logic. Courses in physical, economic, and social geography and in cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information are emphasized in the program. These courses are complemented by courses in mathematics, philosophy, and computer science.

Geography may be selected as an academic major, as a secondary teaching concentration in a social science or earth science program, or as part of an elementary teaching major. Students majoring in geography may qualify for licensure at the secondary level by meeting the minimum requirements in professional education courses for licensure by the state of Ohio. Because of sequential requirements and prerequisites, students are strongly urged to consult with a geography advisor before registering. Students in any major may also minor in Geography.

Geography majors should participate in the department’s internship program if they do not have professional experience in the field. The internship is designed to complement geography students’ class work and gives them experience in the actual work environment. Students interested in the internship should contact the department internship coordinator or their advisor.

Help design your own degree program—one broad in scope, narrow in concentration, and flexible enough to draw courses from all of the departments and programs in the College of Liberal Arts. The liberal studies degree is ideal if your interests encompass more than one liberal arts field and you desire greater flexibility in your program. If you want to change your major but still graduate in a timely manner, or if you are a transfer student who might benefit from an interdisciplinary curriculum, consider liberal studies.
