Economics is a social science that studies how people manage resources and how they can make the best use of available resources.  Economics majors learn to make decisions that are vital to the success of government agencies, businesses, and nonprofits.

An economics degree is widely regarded as one of the most versatile of all collegiate majors.  Economics students are well prepared for a wide array of occupations, giving them many career options and tremendous flexibility on the job market.  This versatility is especially valuable in a constantly changing world and is demonstrated by our graduates’ ability to be placed and pursue careers in many occupational fields including economics, government, financial services and banking, marketing and demand forecasting, management, analytics, and supply chain management.  Some graduates pursue graduate studies in economics, business, law, or public administration.

Economics students learn a logical and ordered way of looking at problems faced by individuals, private organizations, government, and society.  The field of economics teaches students critical and analytical skills that are valued by most professions.  Studying economics also exposes students to a broad spectrum of economic and social issues, providing a valuable perspective to their professional and personal lives.

Economics graduates are able to make or help make most of the key administrative decisions that are faced by modern government and business organizations.  Examples include: leading a cultural nonprofit to maximize its community impact; balancing resources for a county’s poverty programs; improving the production efficiency of a small business; or initiate a large company’s effort to identify new markets for its products.

Studying one of the modern languages at Wright State will help you improve your ability to read, write, and speak in another language, study how that language is used in a social context, and become a more enlightened citizen. You will also learn about the history, politics, culture, media, and literature of your chosen country and study their economic and educational systems.

New technologies have increased global opportunities, and studying a modern language prepares you to work with people all over the world. Government and non-governmental agencies have discovered a critical need for college graduates with foreign language skills.

If the idea of studying abroad excites you, no other degree field offers as many opportunities for you to immerse yourself in a different culture while improving your language skills.

The mathematics component of the Bachelor of Arts program surveys the classical areas of mathematics—analysis, algebra, and geometry—and their history. Courses in statistics and in computer science provide a taste of two relatively young branches of the mathematical sciences. In addition, a broad choice of electives allows you to either pursue greater depth in one of these areas, or to sample a broader range of courses in mathematics, statistics, and computing.

The Bachelor of Arts program features breadth and flexibility. For instance, there is a Related Course Requirement specifically designed to accommodate subject matter outside the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and even outside both the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Industrial and systems engineers work in one of the broadest fields of engineering. Industrial engineers are sometimes called “productivity people” and “efficiency experts”—when it comes to quality control, you are the pro.

Industrial and systems engineering (ISE) focuses on doing more with less—doing things better, cheaper, faster, more safely, and with less waste. Instead of designing bridges, machines, or circuits, industrial engineers will engineer all parts of a process—people, machines, materials, information, and energy—to make a product or provide a service.

Program Outcomes

The following student outcomes of the industrial and systems engineering program will prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives:

• An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
• An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
• An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
• An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which most consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
• An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
• An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgement to draw conclusions

The Department of Human Services in the College of Education and Human Services offers a Bachelor of Science completion degree in sign language interpreting (SLI) designed for students who have previously completed an associate degree in sign language interpreting.  

To enter the program, you must: 

Today's interpreters work with a variety of deaf consumers – those who acquired American Sign Language (ASL) as their first language, those who communicate through a form of visual English, and those who use a contact variety of English and ASL. Hard of hearing, deaf, and blind consumers are also specialty populations you will encounter in your work placements. You may also work with a variety of hearing consumers, some of whom are familiar with American deaf culture and the process of interpreting, and some who are communicating with a deaf person for the first time. 

SLI courses cover a variety of topics and are designed to enhance your current knowledge and skills, building on the foundation formed during your associate-level programs.

You will grasp basic principles of the structure, design, and language of music in its historical and cultural contexts while studying music history and literature at Wright State. You can better understand the music you hear, perform, and create. This major is not a terminal degree, and you should expect to continue at the graduate level. Please consult with the appropriate faculty advisor before entering this program.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers two master’s degree programs-the Master of Science and Master of Science in Teaching (Earth Science). The Master of Science program prepares students for careers as professional earth scientists in industry, government, or education, or for continued graduate study. Current research focus areas of the department include Aquatic Biogeochemistry, Hydrogeology, Geophysics, Geospatial Analysis and Remote Sensing, Complex Earth Processes, Paleoecology and Sedimentary Environments, and Earth Science Education. The department is widely recognized for its applied and multidisciplinary programs and maintains a strong emphasis on practical field applications.

The Bachelor of Arts in physics degree is designed for students who wish to couple a solid foundation in physics to a non-technical and creative arts field, such as writing, philosophy, political science, or other College of Liberal Arts majors. Likewise, students can obtain technical background in physics along with obtaining a background in business for those interested in business development opportunities.

The Department of Physics offers programs leading either to a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics. Students in secondary education may earn the Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and enter the Professional Year Experience program of the College of Education and Human Services for licensure in physics.

The program in selected studies allows students to pursue a self-designed course of study. It is intended for students with a definite educational objective that is not met by the majors presently offered by the College of Liberal Arts. While the program is free from several traditional requirements, students must meet other requirements and procedures to obtain the degree.

Students are eligible for the program after they complete 33 credit hours. With the help of program sponsors, students formulate a contract outlining their study goals and reserving at least 32 credit hours for courses that help accomplish those goals. The contract is evaluated and approved by the program committee.
