Sociology

Sociology is the academic study of society. We explore social change and how social structures, social institutions and culture shape the lives of individuals and communities. Deakin Sociology engages with contemporary issues in the global and Australian landscape such as how society shapes (and is shaped by) illness and health policies, gender and sexuality, religion and new forms of spirituality, migration and inequality, violence and social control. Deakin sociologists are active social researchers with expertise in a variety of methodologies including digital and traditional ethnographies, visual methods, in-depth interviews, focus groups, survey research, experimental design in sociological research, and our graduates learn to apply these skills to the study of social life.

Deakin’s Bachelor of Forensic Science exposes you to the full scope of modern forensic science, from simulated crime scenes to courtroom presentations. The Infection and Immunity major will explore development and disease at a cellular level, investigate key concepts of immunity and blood cells, and introduce the world of genomics and proteomics. Students will gain a sound understanding of the key concepts and techniques underpinning clinically-relevant microorganisms and their control, and through the use of epidemiology and biostatistics identify prevalent diseases in relationship to specific populations. You will also learn current laboratory techniques engaged in molecular diagnostics for the analytical identification of infectious pathogens to develop therapeutic applications.
