Environmental Law and Sustainable Development
Environmental protection and the quest for sustainable development that can meet the needs of both present and future generations have become pressing common concerns at the national and the international level. In past decades, national and international law has developed a wide range of sector-specific and creative cross-cutting approaches to respond to these challenges. 

This Master of Laws specialisation will provide you with a strong theoretical and practical understanding of the environmental legal system, the frameworks of and tools for sustainable environmental management, and the complex policy issues presented by the environmental challenges of the 21st century. Environmental law encompasses a wide and diverse range of issues: energy, climate change, biodiversity conservation, water and oceans, agriculture, finance and international development, but also (and especially in Australia, as one of the world’s most urban nations) issues like city planning, commons, platform and sharing economies, transport, housing and corporate social responsibility. 

You'll acquire the skills and understanding needed to address the ‘wicked problems’ posed by environmental sustainability challenges and be equipped to pursue a career in environmental law and environmental policy. The specialisation draws on UNSW Law & Justice academics and visitors nationally and internationally recognised as experts in the field.

This four-year degree combines advanced coursework with an honours-level research project. You’ll also choose a major to specialise in a particular subject area.

Applied Mathematics
Understand and predict real-world problems and improve their outcomes. Mathematical methods and models are employed to find solutions not only for technical and industrial problems, but also for social, biomedical and economic problems.

Pure Mathematics
Study the foundation of all mathematics. This major is concerned with discovering the patterns and structures that underlie wide areas of mathematics. Although motivated more by a search for beauty and symmetry, this area of mathematics has led to major advances in many areas of science and technology.

Advanced Statistics
Explore the methodology for drawing conclusions from data - estimating the present, predicting the future and making decisions in the face of uncertainty. • Your honours year is an integral part of the degree. It involves a supervised research project and advanced coursework. You’ll conduct original scientific investigations and analysis while developing your critical and integrative thinking.

• The SCIF2041 Research Internship course gives you the opportunity to complete a short theoretical or experimental research project in a world-leading research team supervised by a member of academic staff.
