Canadian Studies is offered as a combined major. As a Canadian Studies co-major, you’ll confront the intersection of Canada’s rich history with culture, cultural policy, politics, economics and geography.

Our courses explore Canada from many angles. We take advantage of our geographic position to explore the impact of the border on culture and trade in Canada.

Studies concentrate on various aspects of solid-state and materials research, from superconductors to soft-condensed matter systems. Our undergraduate students are involved in research — some have even published papers before graduation.

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): Learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

Our Bachelor of Business Economics program is unique in Canada. If you’re interested in combining the studies of economics and business, this degree offers you the best opportunity.
With an emphasis on quantitative, communication and analytical skills, you’ll be well prepared for a variety of careers in both the public and private sectors of the economy. After your first two years, you may specialize in one of the following two areas:

• Financial Economics combines economics with finance knowledge.
• Consumer Economics combines economics with marketing expertise.

Labour Studies is an interdisciplinary field and is home to popular courses, including Labour of Sport, Labour and Employment Law, Animals at Work, and our simulation-based Collective Bargaining course.

You’ll find a mix of theoretical and applied courses designed to prepare you for a wide range of careers in labour and employment relations, workplace education and training, public policy and administration, and social justice and advocacy.

You may pursue a Labour Studies degree or a combined Labour Studies degree with a co- major in Political Science, Sociology, History, Geography, Economics or Women’s and Gender Studies.

This program is an innovative answer to your demands as an international student, as it combines an intensive Business English program with Canadian accounting knowledge and also addresses the demands of a business world that needs accountants who can think critically, communicate effectively and respond to challenges that arise from around the globe. Combine your studies and blend the analytical tools of Economics with Political Science’s knowledge of governments and international institutions.

Economic forces drive many vital international issues such as trade, development, globalized investment and production. The key actors are governments and international institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund. Economic analysis investigates prices, tradeoffs and opportunity costs.

The international political analysis examines interests, rules and incentives. Issues studied include how economic activity and wealth are distributed, and the effect of governments on these.

Our Master of Arts program is designed to integrate these important elements in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism.

We currently offer opportunities for graduate studies in Applied Linguistics for those interested in the field of Teaching English as a Second/Subsequent Language (TESL), as well as for those with an interest in applying linguistics more generally, or to other domains, including Speech Communication Disorders.

Graduates of this professional program will be well-prepared to become TESL professionals, practicing in Canada or abroad AND/OR prepared for future graduate pursuits in fields related to Applied Linguistics, including Speech-Language Pathology.

BRIDGED ENTRY — COURSE-BASED OR MAJOR RESEARCH PAPER (FOR APPLICANTS WHO NEED EXTRA ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT).
Our unique Bridged Entry program is designed for students who would benefit from further assistance using academic English, providing hands-on, preparatory instruction plus one-on-one mentoring throughout the academic year.

While course work is taken with the Direct Entry students at the same academic and professional level, Bridged Entry students have an additional preparatory course (LING 5N01) running from the beginning of July to the end of August before coursework begins. This preparatory course covers topics from academic integrity to the appropriate construction of an academic paper for applied linguistics. In addition, from September to August, Bridged Entry students have regular access to a Writing Mentor who is able to help with the mechanics of writing effective research papers, essays and other assignments.

Philosophy, defined as the pursuit of wisdom, encompasses the exploration of the nature of reality, consciousness, values, knowledge, reason, argument and evidence.

You’ll study not only the primary texts of the Western philosophical tradition, but also major texts of Indian and Chinese thought.

You’ll learn to be critical, reflective, thoughtful, skeptical, affirmative, knowledgeable, and, of course, wise. You’ll become a decision-maker, well trained for a variety of vocations, including law, public service and policy.

The Labour Studies Co-op program offers students a combination of rigorous training in academic theory and practical skills in an off-campus, work based setting. Co-op students gain an enriched understanding of their academic program through practical application. Students develop and refine employability skills, gain an understanding of career opportunities in their field, and gain an understanding of the realities of the workplace.
