Create a custom program for yourself. This program has been designed for individuals wishing to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue further undergraduate and graduate studies, or careers in the sciences in a personalized and flexible way.

You may complete your degree within the program or use it as a foundation to join another program of your choice in the health, life or natural sciences. It is ideally suited to students who are looking for plenty of choice as they develop their study plan. It could include the specific combination of courses required for admission into graduate or professional studies or simply courses that best serve your personal goals and aspirations.

Our Master of Arts program is designed to integrate these important elements in an educational experience promoting a high level of expertise and professionalism.

We currently offer opportunities for graduate studies in Applied Linguistics for those interested in the field of Teaching English as a Second/Subsequent Language (TESL), as well as for those with an interest in applying linguistics more generally, or to other domains, including Speech Communication Disorders.

Graduates of this professional program will be well-prepared to become TESL professionals, practicing in Canada or abroad AND/OR prepared for future graduate pursuits in fields related to Applied Linguistics, including Speech-Language Pathology.

BRIDGED ENTRY — COURSE-BASED OR MAJOR RESEARCH PAPER (FOR APPLICANTS WHO NEED EXTRA ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT).
Our unique Bridged Entry program is designed for students who would benefit from further assistance using academic English, providing hands-on, preparatory instruction plus one-on-one mentoring throughout the academic year.

While course work is taken with the Direct Entry students at the same academic and professional level, Bridged Entry students have an additional preparatory course (LING 5N01) running from the beginning of July to the end of August before coursework begins. This preparatory course covers topics from academic integrity to the appropriate construction of an academic paper for applied linguistics. In addition, from September to August, Bridged Entry students have regular access to a Writing Mentor who is able to help with the mechanics of writing effective research papers, essays and other assignments.

This exciting program is intended for those interested in a career in medicine or biomedical research. The program is offered jointly by the Departments of Biological Sciences and Health Sciences and is focused on the molecular basis of human health.

It draws on the expertise of the Department of Health Sciences in the medical aspects of human health and the Department of Biological Sciences in the theory, methods and applications of molecular genetics.

You’ll be exposed to subjects such as human physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, microbiology, biochemistry and genetics. You’ll receive excellent preparation for biomedical research careers in emerging areas such as human genetics and molecular biology.

The Earth Sciences program trains geoscientists — scientists who study the Earth and other planets in order to better understand their origin and history.

We know the Earth’s history reasonably well, and that knowledge has helped us to discover natural resources, such as oil and gas, economic minerals and metals, and to understand phenomena, such as global climate change and volcano and earthquake hazards. The geological knowledge derived from the Earth also helps us to better understand other solar system bodies. Two of our professors are planetary geologists, including Dr. Mariek Schmidt who is a member of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Project that operates the rover Curiosity as it explores Gale Crater.

Brock’s program is designed to comply with the educational requirements for initial registration as a geoscientist-in-training, the licensing classification that leads to the PGeo designation established by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario.

The graduates of the course will have a comprehensive understanding of the issues and current trends in education and early care for children, starting from birth to eight years old and will be prepared to work or further study in the field of education and care for young children.

The graduates of this program are expected to take on positions that need a strong foundation in early care and education, to teacher education programs towards an Ontario Teaching Certificate or apply to graduate studies.
 

Are you interested in how children acquire language, how the skills of second-language speakers develop, how various language disorders can be diagnosed and treated, or how social or cultural environments interact with language?

In our program, you’ll gain a strong foundation in linguistics, hands-on fieldwork, clinical observation, teaching practice and practical workshops to supplement your academic courses. We offer a choice of two majors:

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL): With this certificate or major, learn how second language learning is different from first language learning, and prepare to teach ESL in different contexts. Learn about advanced theory and practice of second language learning and teaching, and complete a major research paper in our MA Applied Linguistics/TESL program.

Speech-Language & Hearing Sciences: Learn about basic science and communication processes, including the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing, acoustics, linguistics, child language development and selected disorders of human communication. Concentrate in Hearing Sciences and learn about sound, hearing, and hearing disorders, and prepare for admission to graduate audiology programs. Concentrate in Speech-Language Sciences and learn about speech, language, and speech and language disorders, and prepare for admission to speech-language pathology graduate programs.

We are ranked highly among undergraduate Canadian universities in medical and science research grants. You’ll have access to modern labs and the teaching and research knowledge of professors who have received provincial, national and international acclaim for their work.

Lectures, laboratories and field studies will introduce you to the breadth of Biological Sciences, after which you can design your program from courses in biochemistry; cell biology; developmental biology; animal, plant and microbial physiology; genetics; molecular biology; neurobiology; ecology; animal behaviour and bioinformatics.

Combine your studies and blend the analytical tools of Economics with Political Science’s knowledge of governments and international institutions.

Economic forces drive many vital international issues such as trade, development, globalized investment and production. The key actors are governments and international institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund. Economic analysis investigates prices, tradeoffs and opportunity costs.

The international political analysis examines interests, rules and incentives. Issues studied include how economic activity and wealth are distributed, and the effect of governments on these.

Study Geography in Niagara – one of the world’s most diverse social and natural landscapes.

Geographers look at the world from a unique perspective, one that bridges the social and natural sciences. Our programs are designed to combine theory and practical experience to train you in Human Geography, Physical Geography, and Geomatics.

Human Geography aims to understand the human world and its interaction with physical, built and symbolic landscapes. This knowledge is used to work towards more equitable societies.

Physical Geography aims to explain the geographic pattern of weather and climate, landform development and their interactions with the biosphere. This is done by studying processes at the Earth’s surface and how they interact with, affect and are affected by human activities.

Geomatics includes scientific and technological activities that integrate various fields, including cartography, remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS).

Our department has been blending theory and practice for more than five decades through experiential learning in labs, seminars, field courses, internships and much more. These experiences have been developed to help you apply what you learn in class outside the classroom walls.

Professors in our programs engage in a broad range of research activities and incorporate interactive elements into their courses. This often includes spending time outside of the classroom around campus and across Niagara.
