Are you interested in studying how people communicate, ways that social structures affect communication, or how new technologies are changing human communications?

The Media and Communication Studies program focuses on the impact of media and communication in the creation of meaning, identity and social change. The program emphasizes the study of media content, audiences and institutions in their political, economic and social contexts in Canada and elsewhere.

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers four separate programs of study in Business Communication, Media and Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Popular Culture. A four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Honours degree, a 4 Year BA with Major, and a three-year program leading to the BA Pass degree is offered in all four programs. Majors in the Department may complete a Concentration in Digital Culture. Minor programs are available in Digital Culture, Film Studies, Media Studies and Popular Culture for majors in other Departments/Centres as well as a Certificate in Film Studies. In addition, the Department is involved in programs with community colleges which offer students the opportunity to earn a BA Honours Communication Studies, BA Honours Popular Culture or a BA with Major Film Studies degree and a college diploma or certificate.

Communication Studies
Business Communication
Students in Business Communication must attain a minimum 65 percent major average to continue in the program. Business Communication is an interdisciplinary program combining the study of communication with a study of some aspects of business. The program aims to equip the student with a sound theoretical basis for analysing and practicing communication within the business environment.

Media and Communication Studies
Media and Communication Studies is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the impact of media and communication in the creation of meaning, identity and social change, emphasizing the study of media content, audiences and institutions in their political, economic, and social contexts in Canada and elsewhere.

Film Studies
Film Studies is a sequence of critical and historical courses that examine a variety of approaches to film. The courses explore the nature of film language and develop an analytical perspective on film as both an art and a medium. Other courses explore issues and theories in popular culture. Students may have opportunities to engage in media production in selected upper year courses.

The course is for students who wish to make a career working with children in a health-related profession. A one of its kind degrees, it draws on the strengths of the departments of Health Sciences and Child and Youth Studies and provides opportunities to the students to become research assistants and participate in faculty-supervised independent studies. The degree is designed to meet the needs of students interested in the health, wellness, and development of children and adolescents and allows them to gain practical experience in a health-related profession concerned with children. 

Explore the world of interactive media, games and new models of content creation and delivery.

You’ll complete collaborative project work in interactive media while learning about related concepts and production methods.

Students interested in media design and creation can access courses in visual arts and theatre; those wanting to learn programming can choose options in applied computing; and those interested in the possibilities of narrative can pursue courses in English, Film and popular culture. Qualified fourth-year students participate in the program’s capstone production course, bringing together design, art, story, interaction and production in a fully developed interactive media product.

IASC students can choose to participate in internships to gain practical experience — learning from industry leaders and using cutting-edge technology in 3D modelling, motion capture, visual effects, live-action video and 3D printing.

The Certificate in Drama in Education and Applied Theatre would be of particular interest to social workers, drama therapists, psycho-therapists, prison counsellors, people who train volunteers, personnel managers, union organizers and market consultants who wish to add to existing qualifications or to acquire courses which might later be applied to a degree. Studies include the development of skills, such as assessing and evaluating what is perceived, generating ideas, making connections, predicting outcomes, empathizing, abstracting the core from the periphery, questioning, accommodating and compromising and self-presentation. 

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers a variety of courses and degree programs in French Studies, Hispanic and Latin American Studies and Italian Studies. The Department also offers language courses in Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Swahili.

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers four-year programs of study leading to a BA Honours in French Studies, as well as a combined honours in Hispanic and Latin American Studies, and Italian Studies, three-year BA Pass degree program in French Studies, as well as a combined pass in Hispanic and Latin American Studies, a concurrent five-year BA(Honours)/BEd (Intermediate/Senior) degree in French Studies and a Certificate in Spanish Language Proficiency. In addition the Department offers Minor programs in French Studies, German, Hispanic and Latin American Studies and Italian Studies.

Learn and think about children, childhood and youth through diverse lenses. Our unique program draws on psychology, education, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and criminology — among other disciplines — to really understand young people and their perspectives.

This theoretical and practical training offers an approach to understanding children, childhood and youth that includes: diversity, inequality, exceptionalities, families, cultures, social worlds, schools, peers, communities, popular and media culture, and international issues that span the globe. This wide-ranging knowledge base opens up doors to working with young people in a variety of capacities.

The department has been offering undergraduate degrees since 1993, an MA program since 2000 and a PhD program since 2016.

This program explores issues in popular culture from a multidisciplinary perspective. You’ll take a series of critical and historical courses examining a wide range of mass-mediated and non-mass-mediated forms of popular culture.

These include television, popular music, gaming, advertising, social media, sports, fairs and carnivals, literature, and film in their political, historical, economic and aesthetic contexts. Courses in communication, film, Canadian studies and politics will give you an excellent understanding of the world of popular forms, both contemporary and historical.

State-of-the-art equipment and internationally recognized faculty and research projects make our department a dynamic and exciting place.

Studies concentrate on various aspects of solid-state and materials research, from superconductors to soft-condensed matter systems. Our undergraduate students are involved in research — some have even published papers before graduation.

Our program provides a unique foundation in business practices for computing professionals. The program begins with core courses in computer programming, basic data structures and computer organization, augmented by courses in accounting, management and economics.

In upper years, you’ll study databases, advanced data structures, operating systems, computing ethics, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing and organizational behaviour, and software engineering.
