Overview

Students learn to provide client centered, strength-based therapeutic recreation services using the therapeutic recreation process. Students acquire the skills to complete client assessments and to develop, implement and evaluate group and individual therapeutic recreation programs. A variety of facilitative techniques are explored in order to assist individuals to participate in meaningful recreation and leisure experiences that will achieve health related goals, improve functional ability, and increase quality of life.

Diploma in Police Foundations

Students participate in both academic and practical courses that develop the knowledge and skills demanded by Canadian police services. A common first year with the Protection/Security and Investigation program and the Community and Justice Service program allows students the opportunity to transfer between programs after the first year of study. During the first year, students focus on gaining an understanding of criminal justice in Canada as well as practicing healthy and active lifestyles related to law enforcement.

In this program, students focus on forensic crime scene investigation, interview skills, use of force theory and application, police powers, and crisis intervention techniques. Physical training and career preparation components of the program are designed to prepare students to meet the specific demands of police recruitment processes and a career in the field.

A common first year with the Community and Justice Services and Protection, Security and Investigation programs provides students with an overall understanding of criminal justice and law enforcement in Canada and also allows students the opportunity to transfer between programs after the first year of study and possibly receive all three credential in four years. A common first-year with the Protection, Security and Investigation and Police Foundations programs allows students the opportunity to transfer between programs after the first year of study, while gaining an understanding of criminal justice in Canada.

Second year courses incorporate the interpersonal, problem-solving, counselling and case management skills required of the profession to ensure the protection of the public and successful rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders. Students complete a field placement at a professional community or custody based justice agency that supports a transition to the profession.
