The Computer Science program provides a strong foundation in computer science theory and in its practical applications including neural networks, artificial intelligence, robotics, graphics, computer security, software engineering, and game design. You may choose to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science, or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Computer Science, based on your preference and the courses you choose. This will allow you to tailor your degree to be more applied or theoretical by selecting courses that align with your interests, and you will be supported by faculty who are genuinely interested in providing you with the skills to make your dreams a reality. You also have the option of simultaneously attaining a Certificate in Game Design and Development.

The Liberal Science program is general in nature and will expose you to a range of scientific disciplines, and provide a broad-based understanding of science. You will study the basic concepts and approaches of modern science and consider its role in society today.

As a student of the Liberal Science program, you will study the basic concepts and orientations of modern science, and consider its role in today’s society.

At Nipissing you have the option to focus on one of our four streams: Policing, Corrections, Criminology or Criminal Justice Studies. Our flexible program is designed to give you a balanced combination of theory and practice. Through field placements, projects, and research, you will have opportunities to work alongside real criminal justice professionals.

As a student in the Policing stream, you will examine the criminal code, the young offenders system, and learn the skills and techniques you need for a successful career in policing. You will complete courses at both Nipissing University and Canadore College, and graduate with a college diploma and a university degree in just four years! Ethical reasoning and community policing are also key concepts in this stream.

Economics at Nipissing will introduce you to theories and economic models that will give you a solid framework for understanding how the world works. The structure of the Canadian economy, public policy, money, banking and financial institutions, the labour market, and the inter-dependence of nations in the global economy are all topics you will come to grasp with confidence.

You will be introduced to theories and policies related to Canadian and international economic development, and will examine social science issues like poverty, inequality, education, health, migration, agriculture and foreign aid.

The environment and Sustainability program bridges scientific concerns about natural resources with policy development and management.

Why study environment and sustainability?
We depend on the environment for many aspects of our daily lives, including food, employment, recreation, and natural resources for homes, transportation and consumer goods.  Future generations will have a similar dependence on the environment as we do now; it is our responsibility to ensure that the way we use resources now does not impact access to those same resources by future generations.

The Finance stream is a great option for students interested in pursuing a career in the dynamic financial sector. Depending on their interests and career goals, students in the finance stream may elect to choose between one of two focus areas: Entrepreneurial Finance and Financial Product Sales. Students pursuing the Entrepreneurial Finance path will learn how to raise funds for start-up businesses, create realistic financial plans, effectively manage a firm’s cash flows, and interact effectively with banks and investors. This path will prepare students for financial roles in small businesses, entrepreneurial firms or commercial banking. Such positions could include financial managers, credit specialists, controller positions, etc. Those following the Financial Product Sales Specialist path will learn about a large variety of financial products and services existing in modern markets, how to create good financial portfolios based on a client’s risk preferences and how to adjust financial strategies taking into account age, career situation and family situation. They will also learn about new areas such as wealth management including real estate, inheritance issues, tax strategies, etc. This path will prepare students to work in areas such as financial products sales, insurance and financial advising, among others. Students enrolled in the finance stream have the option to work towards a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Finance or Certificate in Financial Product Sales.

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) is a university degree that focuses on subjects within the liberal arts, humanities, social sciences, languages and culture, and fine arts. A bachelor’s degree is usually the first degree you would earn at university upon completing high school and normally takes three to four years to complete. Many programs give you the flexibility to choose many of your courses to suit your interests.

The Bachelor of Commerce will prepare students for a career and life in general. It gives a wholesome approach to learning that gives students more than a degree. Along with core business knowledge, they will develop professional and social skills. The program’s combination of theoretical background, practical skills, real experience, and techniques to hone independent thinking and problem-solving skills will give graduates an advantage and a better chance of success in a competitive market.

In the Criminology stream, you will learn how to understand essential theories and methodologies used in the Criminology field. This stream gives you essential skills in communication, statistics, and analysis. We regularly offer courses in special topics like Women and the Criminal Justice System, and Youth in Conflict with the Law.

The Classical Studies program, offered as part of the Humanities, provides a broad understanding of Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations including their history, philosophy, archaeology, art, language and literature. You will be introduced to Ancient Literature, Latin, Religion, Military Traditions, Mythology, Philosophy, Art and Architecture, Social and Political Thought, and differing theories developed by various historians.

The Classical Studies degree program provides an excellent education in culture, history and language for people who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree, attending law school or considering a degree in teaching.

This program is designed to provide a means for individuals with undergraduate degrees in non-business fields to obtain knowledge of basic business functional areas within a relatively short period of time. The program’s objectives are to present essential, general business knowledge via a carefully selected group of courses, enabling individuals with an interest in or need for familiarity with business topics to gain the needed knowledge and skills.

In order to graduate with the Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Business Administration, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 15 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.
