The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Through a combination of lectures and practical experience, this one-year program will prepare students to work as an animal groomer. Students can use the skills they receive to work for other animal service providers or to start their own business. This program may be taken concurrently with the Veterinary Assistant program. Graduates of this program are equipped with a solid base of technical skills and knowledge in animal grooming. They will be able to work in a number of settings, such as veterinary clinics, veterinary hospitals, pet grooming centers and pet stores. They will also be able to start their own business.

The Business – Accounting option will give students the skills to handle a variety of accounting situations. As part of a management team, graduates will help gather, organize and analyze financial data, administer accounting systems, and advise on accounting problems. Courses in the first two semesters will introduce students to accounting principles.

They will also take courses in marketing, human resources management, math, and business to provide themselves with a solid foundation for their chosen career. During the third and fourth semesters, new subjects are added and earlier subjects are expanded upon. Students will also practice accounting procedures using both manual and computerized accounting software programs. The Canadian Payroll Association and the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping recognize these Northern College courses.

The Office Administration Executive Program improves the skills acquired in year one, while increasing knowledge in specialized areas of office administration. Students will soon realize that they will have the ability to transfer learned skills to relevant situations in several work environments. Our Office Administration Executive Program focuses on:

Students gain valuable, hands-on experience with a one-day-per-week placement in the fourth semester. This practical opportunity allows for further educational and career prospects.

Personal support workers are unregulated health care providers. They work under the supervision of a regulated health professional, supervisor, or in the supported independent living environment under the direction of the client. They provide clearly identified personal care, routine activities of daily living and home management services, by following care/service plans and established policies and procedures. Personal support workers are responsible for their work to their clients and to their employers. Workers providing long term care and support services form the backbone of both community and facility services. They are often the people with whom clients/consumers have the most contact and with whom they develop close relationships. The attitude and approach of workers and their abilities are critical to the well being, comfort, safety and health of the people they support.

Education to prepare support workers assists them to develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills, which emphasizes the value of their role and reflects true sensitivity and respect for the individuality of each consumer/client. This program was developed as part of the Ontario provincial government’s plan to reform long term care and support services provided to people living at home and in long term care facilities. The Personal Support Worker Program is a two semester program consisting of theory and clinical practice in both institutional and community settings

Business Fundamentals is a common first year business program for Northern College’s two-year business programs in Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Business General studies, and Global Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. This program offers intakes in September and January. Students starting in January take two semesters of study ending in early July, and then continue with second year studies in the fall.

The technician is part of the engineering team, involved in all aspects of mining from exploration, planning, development and operation, to mineral extraction and environmental control. This program is offered in a modular distance – education format that allows you to take courses from the comfort of your home, avoid long commutes, minimize accommodation and living costs while studying, maintain your employment, as well as develop sound communication and computer skills. Distance theory education is coupled with yearly field school components which are held at the Haileybury campus during the spring

The Business – Human Resources program will prepare students to participate in staffing, performance management, training, employee relations, health and safety, and benefits and compensation administration functions. Students will develop skills in communication, information technology, and teamwork, and will learn organizational development strategies to support the human resources activities of an organization.

This two-year diploma program is suited to students who are interested in working with animals. The program will provide them with the knowledge and animal handling skills required to be an integral team player within veterinary practices, research facilities, or other animal related industry.

Students will learn to perform basic patient examination, collect data on vital signs, administer medications and prepare pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a veterinarian. They will explore anesthesia, animal nursing, surgical assistance, dental prophylactic procedures, diagnostic laboratory work and tests, such as blood chemistries, culture and sensitivity, and electrocardiograms. This program covers veterinary practice management skills including computer applications, recognizing behavioral signs of small animals and educating and counseling clients in the area of pet nutrition.

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well rounded Business Graduate.
