Canadian Studies was born at Trent. Study in the School for the Study of Canada at one of the first universities in the country to establish a Canadian Studies department.

How has Canada become what it is today, and what does it mean to be Canadian? Many aspects of modern culture - from the literary elements of comedy and tragedy to our laws and ideals of democratic government — have their origins in Ancient Greece and Rome. Trent’s Ancient Greek and Roman Studies program gives students the opportunity to examine human behaviour and culture in the Ancient Mediterranean. Explore compelling topics surrounding warfare, class struggles, economy, religion, gender, cultural heritage, and the genius of the human spirit – issues as relevant today as they were in antiquity. 

What does it mean to be an Indigenous person today? How do history and politics, the land and the law, culture and contemporary issues shape relationships amongst and between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities? Students in Trent’s Indigenous Studies programs develop a complex understanding and appreciation of Indigenous experiences in Canada and around the world.

For more than 50 years, Trent has been committed to advancing a multidimensional understanding through Indigenous Studies. Here - in the first program of its kind in Canada - you’ll explore the interdisciplinary nature of a program with a distinct sense of community as you immerse yourself in diverse Indigenous Nations, including all aspects of the Indigenous experience and their many contributions to Canadian society.

Plants, animals, and humans all require fresh water to survive, and many living species make water ecosystems their home. With less than 2% of the Earth’s water supply being freshwater, efforts to conserve our most precious resource have become critical to survival. As a student in this program, you’ll complete a series of practical and theoretical courses drawn from four primary subjects (biology, chemistry, geography, and environmental science), providing a foundation for examining of the science of water and the aquatic environment. By studying at Trent, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of contemporary water challenges, acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to aquatic issues in Canada and around the world.

Build your future career by uncovering the ancient past, studying in one of the most robust archaeology programs in Canada. Your studies will focus on the history of human beings, examining artifacts, human and animal bones, architecture, and plants. You’ll learn the field methods and lab techniques used to study these materials, as well as theories archaeologists use to understand the ancient cultures and past civilizations of the Americas, Europe and the pre-Classical and Classical Mediterranean world.

What does Archaeology look like in the contemporary world? Go beyond the traditional study of Greece and Rome to look at how modern Mediterranean infrastructure is influenced by ancient remains, challenging you to explore and respond to elements threatening cultural heritage.

More than simply the study of numbers, mathematics is a powerful tool that is crucial for helping us make sense of the world around us. In this program, you’ll learn about the fundamental structure of the universe and the limits of human reason. The expertise and skills developed in this program are in high demand in the job market, as mathematical science careers are estimated to be one of the fastest growing occupation sectors in the coming decade.

Gain critical and interdisciplinary understanding of criminalization and punishment, in a program that places critical focus on systemic oppression including the historical and contemporary realities of Indigenous peoples’, over-criminalization.

Justice served is about so much more than crime and punishment. In Trent’s new Criminology degree, you will gain a foundational understanding of the influence of social inequality as a cause of crime. Learning alongside faculty experts in Sociology, Law, Gender & Social Justice and Indigenous Studies, as well as the new Canada Research Chair in Community-Partnered Social Justice, you will apply your skills and knowledge to better understand the systems at play for both criminals and victims. This program is offered fully online or as a hybrid program with both online and on-campus, in-class learning. Students also have the potential to perform independent research on homelessness, the criminalization of women, as well as gain critical understanding of the realities of Indigenous peoples’ and the criminal justice system.
