Why study Pharmacology? (Specialization program)

Pharmacology is the study of the way in which chemical substances affect living organisms. If you are interested in studying the effects of pharmaceutical drugs, street drugs, and/or harmful chemicals in people and in society, then the Pharmacology program will be of interest to you.

Why take the BSc Specialization degree?

The Bachelor of Science Specialization degree provides a focused education in one program. You will take most of your courses in your main subject area, and are expected to maintain a higher standard of academic achievement. A Specialization degree can provide the background to help you proceed to a higher degree, but its primary function is to provide a comprehensive education at the undergraduate level.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc Honors degree.

This program examines how the animal agriculture (livestock and poultry) and food industries interface, through an understanding of animal and human disease, animal nutrition, microbiology, physiology, behaviour and production. You’ll work closely with agricultural animals and have many opportunities for industry interaction.

The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture is a four-year interactive degree program that will prepare you for a successful career in a range of agriculture specialties. As a student in this program, you will have the opportunity to:

• Learn the biology of plants and/or animals and the role of biotechnology in society.
• Explore environmentally sustainable approaches to manage land used for the production of food, clothing, fuel and other consumer products.
• Develop hands-on skills through an extensive network of plant and animal research facilities.
• Apply your knowledge and skills while completing real-world projects and case studies that examine issues faced by industry, government and environmental organizations.
• Join the Agrology profession (Alberta Institute of Agrologists) and take a leadership role as a professional agrologist in Alberta.

Undergraduate majors in Agriculture 
All majors lead to becoming a Professional Agrologist (P.Ag.) once you graduate.
Agriculture & Resource Economics
Develop the skills you need to be a leader in the agriculture industry with a major in Agriculture and Resource Economics. 

Animal Science
This program offers you the research skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a range of livestock and agriculture fields. 

Crop Science
Become a leader in the agricultural industry with a major in crop science. Becomes an expert in plant growth, soils and crop production factors.

Sustainable Agricultural Systems
Develop the skill needed to lead in sustainable agricultural systems with this major stream. 

Why take the Environmental Engineering Option in Civil Engineering?

Environmental engineers apply their knowledge of the natural sciences — chemistry, biology, and microbiology — with their expertise in civil engineering to design municipal services and solve environmental problems. As an environmental engineer, you might be involved in performing an environmental impact assessment, or in designing or managing systems for water distribution and collection, water treatment plants, solid waste handling and processing facilities, landfills, and air treatment plants.

This Option is taken as part of a Civil Engineering degree.

The Social Sciences route is a great choice for more theoretically minded design students, offering a unique blend of traditional design principles and techniques with disciplines such as psychology and sociology. The result is a more human-centred type of design thinking, and a set of skills that employers and society as a whole increasingly need..

Why study Computing Science? (Specialization program)

The BSc Specialization in Computing Science is very unique as it combines the structure of a Specialization degree with elements of customization often found in the General Science program. Nicknamed “Computing and X”, this program allows you either to study a concentrated area of computing science or to combine the study of computing science with another discipline, thus creating a very tailored degree.

Our CS department has expertise in several exciting of areas, including Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Multimedia and Computer Games, Software and Database systems, and Machine Learning and Bioinformatics. Together, we are changing how computing science is being taught.

Computing Science can also be taken as part of a BSc General or a BSc with Honors.

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. It explores the many intricate rules that govern and structure all human languages, including grammar and phonetics. The University of Alberta offers a BA in Criminology, which is the study of crime and social responses to crime. In this degree program, you will engage with excellent instructors and leading scholars in their fields through lectures, seminars, and one-on-one mentorship.
