Why take the Nanoengineering Option in Electrical Engineering?

This program provides an introduction to the principles of electronics, electromagnetics, and photonics as they apply at the nanoscale level. By selecting this option, students will learn about the processes involved in the fabrication of nanoscale structures and become familiar with the computer-aided design tools necessary for analyzing phenomena at high levels of miniaturization.

This Option is taken as part of an Electrical Engineering degree.

Our Honors Physics degree is designed to build a strong background in numerous areas of modern physics, covering topics from mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism to areas like laser spectroscopy, optics, electronics and more. The Honors degree includes a special project that is completed under the direction of a department member and is an excellent path for further advanced education in Physics.

Physics can also be taken as part of a BSc General or BSc with Specialization degree.

This combined program, offered jointly with the Faculty of Education, allows you to earn two degrees in five years, preparing you to become a teacher for Grades K-6 while providing you with additional expertise. The first three years of this program are taken in the Faculty of Native Studies, and the last two years are taken in the Faculty of Education; while completing the Elementary Education route, you can choose to minor in Native Education, Social Studies, or Cree.

We also offer a combined Native Studies / Secondary Education degree.

Why the Faculty of Native Studies?

We are the only independent Faculty of Native Studies in Canada, with small class sizes and a diverse student population of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. We are student-centered, with a close-knit community of students, professors, and staff. We host regular Tea and Bannock potlucks, an annual tipi raising and take-down, and Games Night with the Dean.

We are research-focused, with opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research projects. Our courses incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge and heritage as well as contemporary Indigenous experiences.

Designers today are increasingly required to focus on the psychological, social, and cultural considerations of design, in addition to materials, processes, and formal design concerns. The Social Sciences route is a great choice for more theoretically minded design students, offering a unique blend of traditional design principles and techniques with disciplines such as psychology and sociology. The result is a more human-centred type of design thinking, and a set of skills that employers and society as a whole increasingly need..

Why take Computing Science? (Honors)

The Honors Computing Science program is an excellent choice for highly motivated students looking for in-depth study. The program is loosely structured so as to take advantage of the interdisciplinary nature of computing, and the department works closely with you to assist with developing your program.

Our CS department has expertise in several exciting of areas, including Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Multimedia and Computer Games, Software and Database systems, and Machine Learning and Bioinformatics. Together, we are changing how computing science is being taught.

Why study Biochemistry? (Specialization program)

Biochemistry explores the chemistry of living organisms and the molecular basis for change occurring in living cells, providing the basis for practical advances in areas as diverse as medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and forensics.

The Biochemistry Specialization program is a structured program, but it allows for some flexibility with course selection. You can access unique opportunities like our research abroad course and our Certificate in Biomedical Research to further develop your research skills and gain experience that will take your education in new directions.

This program is designed to provide a strong education in the areas of mathematics, finance, economics and actuarial science. Graduates of our program can apply mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze financial products and manage financial risk.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc with Specialization degree

The most intensive of all our programs, admission to the Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) program is dependent on a successful performance audition and the completion of a music rudiments placement test.
All Bachelor of Music students take a common first year that includes applied music lessons, courses in music theory, music history, aural skills, and large ensemble performance. This introductory year also includes studies in English as well as an elective of the student's choice from outside the Department of Music.
At the end of this introductory year, and once the student has had the opportunity to assess their particular strengths and interests, a specific route of study is normally identified in consultation with the student's principal instructor and/or the undergraduate advisor.
In all program routes, the core subjects - music theory, music history, aural skills, large ensemble - continue into the second year. Greater concentration in the specific route of study occurs in years three and four. Applied music and ensemble performance study continues through all years of the Bachelor of Music programs, with the exception of the Composition and Sonic Arts Route.
All programs consist of four years of study. To be eligible to continue in any of these program routes, students must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.3.
Students may choose to concentrate on one of the following routes: General, Performance, or Composition and Sonic Arts. Students who have already completed a previous degree-in music or otherwise-may also opt to complete a B.Mus After-Degree.

General Route
This curriculum allows for flexible programming to accommodate individual backgrounds and interests, allowing this route to be as general or as specialized as a student wishes.

Performance Route
This route is designed to focus on solo instrumental/vocal study and performance. Admission into this route is dependent upon the recommendation of a jury and the consent of the Department. Public recitals are required in each of the final two years. Students may major in one of the following instruments:

• Keyboard (Organ, Piano)
• Percussion
• Strings (Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, Harp, Viola, Violin)
• Voice
• Winds (Bassoon, Clarinet, Euphonium, Flute, Horn, Oboe, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba)

Composition and Sonic Arts

• This route focuses on the creation of original music and an understanding of theoretical principles and technologies involved in contemporary musical practice. Our faculty specialize in music of all kinds, including contemporary acoustic composition, electroacoustic music, sound art, free improvisation, and collaborative work with artists in other media. Students work with our world-class performance and composition faculty, student ensembles, and professional musicians from the city of Edmonton to produce their own compositions, featured in concerts open to the public every semester. Why study Cell Biology? (Honors)

Cell Biology takes a coordinated approach to the study of cells – the basic units of life. It integrates all the other life sciences in studying cells from the point of view of how they function. Courses in protein function, gene expression, and developmental biology will provide you with a comprehensive cell biology background and prepare you for entry into the workforce, graduate school, or a professional program such as medicine.

The Drama major, taken as part of the BA/BEd combined degree, explores both theory and practice within a well-rounded liberal arts setting. You will be exposed to every aspect of the theatrical process, including acting, clowning, and improvisation; playwriting, directing, production, and design; and critical analysis and theory. You’ll also have the opportunity to pursue your own independent project in research and/or practice

Why take the Secondary Education / Drama combined program?

If you want to create theatre and teach others about theatre and its creative process, this combined degree is for you. The first three years are taken in the Faculty of Arts, and the last two years are taken in the Faculty of Education. You’ll graduate in five years with two degrees: a BA (Drama) degree and a BEd (Secondary) degree. This highly structured program allows for in-depth theatrical study paired with the training required to be a Junior or Senior High (Grades 7-12) teacher.
