Politics is life, and like life, politics is a struggle. The study of politics equips you with the concepts, theories and facts necessary to make sense of that struggle. Politics is about us: how we make decisions in society and who gets what, when and how. Politics is also concerned with the conflict of ideas and values, not only at the level of the local community or the nation but also internationally. More specifically, it has to do with who governs and how and why decisions that affect all of us (such as how much students pay to study at a university) are made.

Language is part our everyday lives, yet how much do we actually understand about how it works? Linguistics is the study of language, its structure and meaning, how it is learnt and used, and what this says about who we are and where we come from.

Linguistics broadens your understanding of how language works in your own society. It also provides understanding of concepts and structures in languages and cultures beyond your own.

You’ll identify core similarities in language and communication, two activities that define us as humans. This qualification will appeal to you if you enjoy learning languages or have a curiosity about language.

Microbiology is an essential science that helps us understand the microbes in the environment, including microbes that dwell in the soil, air and water, in our food and inside people, animals and plants. Microbiology can impact on many different areas, such as:

• Agriculture, where rumen microbes are both essential to dairy and good industries, but also responsible for much of New Zealand’s carbon emission;
• Bioprotection, where efforts to preserve native birds (kiwi) and plants (kauri trees) depend on expert control of microbial pathogens
• Microbes have applications as model systems to answer questions beyond the immediate range of microbiology, such as the causes of cancer or birth defects;
• Green and bio-based technologies, where microbes help preserve our environment by producing bio-based materials for use in diagnostics and vaccines or by harnessing solar energy for fuel production.

With a Master of Arts (Economics) at Massey you’ll investigate how businesses decide what to produce and how many people to employ, explore how people decide what to consume, and learn about big-picture world economics. This programme will help you in your own decision-making, and in better understanding developments in the economy and society in general. It offers ways of thinking about the world that let you make the best of what you have, and improve on it.

Massey’s Master of Science with a major in biological sciences gives you expertise in a broad range of biological and fundamental sciences.

When you study Massey’s Master of Science with a major in biological sciences you don’t have to focus on one particular type of science. You will gain expertise across a range of your interests.

Are you interested in subjects like microbiology, genetics and biochemistry, but don’t have all the prerequisites you need to specialise? Do you want to open the door to a broader range of careers? A major in biological sciences gives you a broad-based degree that keeps your options open.

Within the degree you can focus on one particular area of science, or keep your study broad - the choice is yours.

This degree is the only New Zealand horticultural degree fully co-designed and created in collaboration with industry. The Bachelor of Horticultural Science is focused on helping you become a horticulture graduate who can hit the ground running. It will give you the relevant, contemporary skills that industry seek.

The Graduate Diploma in Arts (History) is a bridging tool for graduates in other subjects to get the equivalent of a major in history.

In the Master of Veterinary Studies (Veterinary Public Health) you’ll learn from our world-leading experts how to help create solutions to reduce the impact of animal pathogens on human health. This includes the prevention and control of food and water-borne pathogens.
The Master of Veterinary Studies (Veterinary Public Health) is a research-focused qualification. It has a focus on issues around food safety, water quality and zoonotic diseases. These are issues that have a crossover between animal and human health.

The Bachelor of Business (Accountancy) is an accountancy degree with an integrated business perspective, giving you the skills and confidence to measure the big decisions affecting modern organisations and societies.You will gain many skills useful in different types of businesses, both in New Zealand and internationally, with a sound base in the business fundamentals of accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, law and communication.

The conservation biology qualification has a strong emphasis on integrating theory with practice and teaching state-of-the-art analytical techniques, providing a good stepping-stone to PhD research as well as employment opportunities.
