This course offers you the opportunity to choose your own route through the field of animation, studying either MA Animation or the bracketed specialism, Visual Effects.

Animation is a discipline that adapts, challenges and leads the moving image industry. It is in the DNA that we all share since it can be applied equally to live action, games, XR, live performance, online, and any number of time-based media as well as being an important form in itself.

Creating animation is a collaboration, and at the heart of this course we encourage students to develop a strong network within the School of Digital Arts and industry focussed links. Animation is not a mono-discipline but multi-faceted, and our bracketed animation specialism reflects the many ways that animation can be applied and examined. From science communication, to award winning short films, to mind-bending VFX, animation touches and transforms many areas.

You will drive your creative projects in your chosen practice with staff who will guide and challenge you. Our postgraduate community is led by a specialist team of academic staff and visiting speakers who are practising artists, animators and researchers. They bring their passion and knowledge of the varied industries that animation feeds and share advice and expertise about how students will join them.

Data can provide insights to shape decision-making, power scientific innovation, improve business operations or inform government policy. But it takes state-of-the-art statistical and computational methods to unlock that power. Our MSc Data Science course lets you master those methods.

On this data science masters, we’ll equip you with the knowledge and skills to acquire, curate, manage and analyse data for solving real-world problems. This course is available with an optional placement year, which you’ll commence in your second year after you’ve completed your academic credits. The placement provides an opportunity to develop a professional career development plan. You’ll be able to apply the skills you’ve learned throughout your postgraduate studies in a practical workplace, and tailor your knowledge to suit a specific industry or skillset.

Students are expected to behave in a professional and business like manner when on placement or conducting projects with external partners.

BSc Sociology with Quantitative Methods offers exciting opportunities for you to study the cutting-edge discipline of sociology in the vibrant city of Manchester, whilst gaining extensive quantitative skills. It is aimed at students who want to understand and analyse contemporary social phenomena, trends and problems as well as develop a specialism in quantitative methods to study society.

The first year introduces you to the building blocks of sociology: key sociological concepts and theories, social divisions and problems, and major transformations – such as globalisation or digital culture – which are altering the fabric of contemporary society. You will receive training in a wide range of research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, during the first two years. Our computer games development degree is designed to turn you into a games programmer and designer – from the word go you’ll be hands-on, designing and programming games as you prepare for an exciting career at the cutting-edge of interactive digital content.

In our state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll develop traditional computer science skills, such as programming and maths for computing, as well as specialist games development and design techniques. You’ll also study all types of games software, from the programming of game components, to high-level development tools such as Unity and Unreal Engine. At the same time you’ll be learning about game logic and architecture, the production of game objects and environments, and the processes used to design and develop games in industry.

Amongst a team of skilled healthcare professionals – including doctors and nurses – physiotherapists independently identify, assess and analyse physical problems caused by injury, illness or ageing and treat them by taking a holistic approach using skills such as manual therapy, exercise or electrotherapy.

Our three-year course incorporates the core values of the NHS constitution to help prepare you for the challenges of working as a physiotherapist in contemporary healthcare.

You’ll learn to assess what people need, and identify their problems. We’ll help you to understand how to set treatment goals and determine approaches that provide the maximum benefit for your patient.

To teach you essential clinical reasoning skills we use real patient case studies. This will give you the opportunity to try out your practical skills such as joint mobilisations and massage on people in your class and on patient simulators.
