You'll study a broad curriculum covering the theory and practical application of chemical engineering, including how to use industrial apparatus in our very own pilot plant.

In your third year you spend a paid year in industry, gaining invaluable work experience and building industry contacts. You will work in a team of professional engineers and scientists to apply your knowledge to an industrial problem defined by your host company. Your technical skills will be assessed through an industrial design project and you complete selected chemical engineering topics by distance learning.

On return to University in your fourth year, you study a selection of topics that are tailored to further develop the technical expertise you gain on your placement.

This Urban Planning degree focuses on the built environment and how it’s developed. You'll develop a thorough understanding of planning processes, design awareness and housing policy so you're equipped to pursue a career in town planning.

The course draws on Newcastle’s rich history, including the rise and decline of industry and its more recent cultural renaissance. You will undertake projects that address real-life planning situations and challenges, taking you out into the city and beyond. Study visits in Stage 2 also offer opportunities for international exploration and comparison.

You'll study topics such as design awareness, environmental sustainability and housing policy, and participate in a range of field trips and projects to see planning in action. You can specialise in subjects such as global poverty, the design of urban spaces, the effect of digital tools on democracy and how we plan for mega projects and the unknown.

Our Classics and Ancient History master's builds and expands on your previous studies. You can specialise in either classics or ancient history.

The course is primarily designed for students who have studied ancient history, classics or classical studies as their first degree.

Classics and ancient history at Newcastle has a long and distinguished reputation for its research and teaching. We've taught Latin and Greek since 1874, ancient history since 1910, and classical archaeology since 1931.

This four-year Linguistics with German degree concentrates on developing your understanding of how we communicate, and the growth of language in the brain. You'll explore linguistics in the context of English and German language. Building your fluency in German alongside your study of linguistics will give you a unique perspective on the language. You will study German from intermediate or advanced level depending on your previous experience.

In your third year, you'll immerse yourself in German culture as you spend the year in Germany, further improving your language skills and confidence, and gaining a first-hand appreciation for the language in context.

This four-year Chinese Studies or Japanese Studies degree immerses you in the study of the culture and society of China or Japan. It focuses on developing your languages skills and building an appreciation of different cultures.
