Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology and Anthropology
In today's fast-changing and globalising world an ability to understand the diversity of human behaviour and experience across space and time is extremely valuable. Our BA Archaeology and Anthropology offers an exciting, interdisciplinary perspective on what it means to be human, employing archaeology and social, biological and linguistic anthropology to address key challenges past and present. These include migration and mobility, sustainable heritage and development, and technological change and social inequalities.
Our programme provides students with practical and professional skills designed to enhance employability through activities such as the analysis of big data on contemporary population health; biomolecular investigation of archaeological finds; and the presentation of cultural heritage to the public.
Year one introduces the fundamental theories of the two disciplines. You will take units that introduce you to the disciplines of archaeology and material culture studies as well as social, linguistic and biological anthropology.
Years two and three allow greater specialisation in skills, regional foci and current debates. You will become familiar with the range of research methods and theoretical frameworks employed and the sorts of questions archaeologists and anthropologists ask.
A wide variety of optional units exploring particular themes, periods and geographical areas is available at second- and third-year level.
The third year provides an opportunity to pursue a specialist area of interest working closely with a member of staff to write a dissertation on an original topic of your choice. There is a work placement option with an external partner such as a museum, commercial archaeological unit or national heritage organisation.

Master of Science in Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis
Numerical models and satellite observation are fundamental to understanding environmental systems and change. The MSc in Environmental Modelling and Data Analysis will provide you with the skills to go on to a career in this exciting area. You will learn how models of environmental processes are developed and applied across a range of areas including climate change, flooding, biogeochemistry and glaciers. You will gain an appreciation of all aspects of environmental modelling ranging from the philosophy of model development, focussing on links to observations and uncertainty analysis, through to more practical aspects such as numerical approximation and algorithm development and testing.
The programme has close links to its twin MSc in Geographical Data Science and Spatial Analytics, which allows students to develop skills in Geographical Information Systems, analysis of satellite observations and Data Science techniques more widely. This will be complimented by hands-on teaching aimed at developing your coding skills in scientific programming and high-performance computing (with access to Bristol’s unique supercomputing facilities).
The MSc is taught by world-leading researchers from the School’s Hydrology, Glaciology and Earth System Modelling research groups. It is closely linked to the School's Geocomputation research strand, which hosts seminars and workshops aimed at consolidating links between environmental modelling and Data Science.

This degree develops analytical and quantitative skills applicable to a wide range of careers in economics and beyond.
We teach economics in a technically rigorous way. Econometrics - the application of statistical methods to data to estimate economic models - is a central component of the course.
In your first two years, mandatory units in macro and micro-economics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics provide you with a strong foundation. You will complement this with optional modules from a wide range of choices both within the Schools of Economics, Finance and Management and from other parts of the University. The number of options increases as you progress through the degree, so you have the flexibility to select units from the areas of economics that most interest you.
In the final year most students choose an applied economics dissertation. You will also also select from a wide range of optional units; in recent years these have included Behavioural Economics, Corporate Finance, Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Industrial Economics, International Economics and Operations Management.
The Study Abroad in a Modern Language course allows you to extend your degree to four years, spending your third year studying economics at a university in Europe or farther afield before returning to Bristol for your final year. You will study in the language of your host country and take language courses in your first and second years in preparation.
This course combines the challenging, broad academic content of our economics degree with an overseas dimension that reflects the international nature of the economy.

Master of Science in Social and Cultural Theory
This programme provides an introduction to a range of debates within the so-called 'cultural turn' in sociological studies. Increasingly, sociologists are looking to the concept of culture as a source of explanation - and questioning - in their studies of contemporary social formations.
The MSc in Social and Cultural Theory addresses both theoretical and substantive elements of this cultural turn. The works of key thinkers within social and cultural theory are explored, while the role of cultural explanations within theories of race and ethnicity, gender relations and the sociology of religion (among others) is also given both theoretical and empirical consideration.
These issues are situated within the framework of analyses and critiques of wider debates and discourses in social and cultural theory. They cover questions such as postmodernism, postfeminism and postcolonialism.

Business & Management
Bachelor of Arts in International Business Management and German
We live and work in a world characterised by rapid technological and societal change on a global scale. To be effective in business and management in a multinational environment requires an understanding of the cultural, linguistic, economic, political and social contexts in which organisations operate, both within and across national borders.
BA International Business Management and German will help you develop the intellectual, analytical, critical and employability skills you will need to succeed as a manager or leader in many careers across different sectors. A knowledge of German, the second most important language for European business besides English, will allow you direct access to the cultural production, political debates and economic data from German-speaking countries.
Your first year will introduce basic concepts and tools – both qualitative and quantitative – for the study of management. Alongside this, you will develop your proficiency in German from a beginner's level or post A-level and gain a grounding in key aspects in the history and development of German-speaking communities.
In years two and four, through a combination of core and optional units, you will develop your understanding of international business management and gain some specialisation in an area of interest. At the same time you will combine advanced study of German with optional units in the history, culture and politics of German-speaking countries.
You will spend your third year abroad, which will enable you to refine your language skills and cultural knowledge and gain valuable work experience. For further details of year abroad opportunities visit Global Opportunities.
In the final year you will also undertake a capstone individual research project in which you can combine your linguistic, cultural and management competencies in exploring a case study of interest to you, leading to the development of a business plan.

Master of Science in Biorobotics
The next frontier in robotics will take inspiration from biology to design robots that are soft, smart, green, and social. From microrobots for cancer treatment, to swarms powering warehouses, soft grippers for manufacturing, and new material interfaces for prosthetics, biorobots will provide solutions to today’s global challenges. State-of-the-art robots will in turn power scientific discovery, allowing for the study of living systems in their natural habitats from robots automating experiments in the lab, to artificial fish studying pollution in the deep sea.
This programme brings together life scientists and engineers in an interdisciplinary environment where solutions are co-created with stakeholders in mind. For the life scientists, this will open new horizons powered by Robotics and AI, skills in high demand in today’s job market. For the engineers, this will go beyond a typical robotics training, towards reinventing the way robots are designed and used with bioinspiration at heart.
This unique combination of biology and engineering will develop core professional skills including working across disciplines and responsible open-ended innovation. The programme centres around a common core in fundamental robotics and life sciences, followed by dedicated taught and project-based biorobotics units that will walk you through latest research and applications, with a hands on understanding of how to build these systems yourself, and demonstrations of how they can be used for good.
