On this four-year, joint honors course you will develop your language and cultural knowledge of Spain and Latin America to degree level alongside core units in civil and common law – the world’s most prominent legal systems. Master of Arts in Comparative Literatures and Cultures
The MA in Comparative Literatures and Cultures gives you the opportunity to study the encounters and exchanges between literatures and cultures across Europe and beyond. We welcome graduates of all arts and humanities disciplines.
You will become acquainted with the theory and practice of comparative cultural study, and consider how concepts of national cultures cross borders and interact with ideas of the global and transnational. You will gain a thorough grounding in cultural theory, critical reading and research skills, and put this theoretical knowledge into practice by studying topics and themes that span the disciplines, national contexts and time periods taught by experts in the School of Modern Languages.
While knowledge of a foreign language is not a requirement for this program, you will have the opportunity to learn a language at a variety of levels, from beginner to advanced, and to engage with material in foreign languages throughout the MA. The program culminates in a dissertation - an extended piece of original academic research.
As a postgraduate, you will be considered a full member of the academic community, with the opportunity to participate in the many research seminars and conferences taking place within the Faculty of Arts.

Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literatures and Cultures and German
Our BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures degree offer an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in depth and breadth. You will study global literatures and cultures in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.
Core units in years one and two currently include What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture. Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures.
Your third year is spent in a German-speaking country, where you will undertake university study, a British Council assistantship or a work placement. You will follow a programme of study in German, developing linguistic skills enabling you to communicate easily in writing and orally. In year four you will complete an innovative supervised independent project, consisting of an extended essay on a topic of your choice and a public-facing element presented to the entire cohort (e.g. prospectus, interview, museum catalogue entries, newspaper article).
You will be taught by experts in the field and teaching is informed by staff research interests. Teaching is delivered in varied ways, through lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and one-to-one supervision. You will participate in small-group teaching and may be asked to give introductory talks to initiate discussion.

Our BA Classics degree focuses on the study and appreciation of a wide spectrum of Greek and Latin literature. Languages are taught at all levels, from absolute beginner onward. Some classes concentrate on building and developing language and translation skills; others focus on literary criticism and engagement with the text.
In the first two years you will study both Greek and Latin language and literature as well as choosing from optional units on a wide range of topics, including Graeco-Roman literature, philosophy and art. There is the possibility of studying abroad for one semester in the second year.

This four-year integrated economics and management degree allows you to study both disciplines to a high level, and gives you a fantastic opportunity to live and study abroad for a year at one of our partner universities. The degree is the same as the three-year BSc Economics and Management until you get to year three, which you will spend abroad studying modules in economics and management. You will return to Bristol for your final year.
Your first year and half of your second year comprise mandatory units which will give you a solid grounding in both disciplines. This content is fixed to ensure that you have a depth of understanding which will enable you to explore what you find most interesting later on.
Half of your second year is made up of optional units, as is your entire final year. At least one third of your final year must be selected from units in economics, and at least one third from units in management – but aside from that restriction, you are free to focus on your preferred discipline, or indeed to select options in accounting or in finance (subject to having completed appropriate prerequisites).
